Publisher's Summary
Tim LaHaye created the Left Behind Series, which has become one of the most popular fiction series of all time. Those novels, with more that 50 million copies sold, presented a unique combination of suspense and substance drawn from his lifelong study of Biblical prophecy.
Now Tim LaHaye has created a new series that begins with Babylon Rising. The novels in this new series are even faster-paced thrillers based on prophecies that are not covered in the Left Behind books and that have great relevance to the events of today.
Babylon Rising introduces a terrific new hero for our time. Michael Murphy is a scholar of Biblical prophecy, but not the sedate and tweedy kind. Murphy is a field archaeologist who defies danger to fearlessly hunt down and authenticate ancient artifacts from Biblical times. His latest discovery is his most amazing - but it will send him hurtling from a life of excavation and revelations to a confrontation with the forces of the greatest evil. For the latest secret uncovered by Michael Murphy accelerates the countdown to the time of the end for all mankind.

A good inspiration
I found the book as good as the Left Behind series. In fact in some ways I found it better. The left behind series inspired me to look into prophecy theory a lot more then I ever had before. I wanted to check what I was reading. Tim La Haye has done the same thing for me here. Using fiction and writng about this biblical archeologist encouraged me to subscribe to Biblical Aarcheology Review as soon as I finished listening. Like Paul in the book I became interested in the feild. Were the characters meant to be believable, not likely, are all the details perfect, No, but it was an entertaining fiction and I think it did what it was suppose to: make me find out and study for myself.

Skip the book into
Though this book didn't live up to expectations, I did enjoy the story. I felt the Left Behind series is much better. If you enjoy a good adventure/historical mystery/comic book with semi-believable characters, you'll enjoy this one.
To assist in your enjoyment you'll need to either skip LaHaye's intro, or disregard his description of the story's hero. He calls the hero someone who "faces many of the challenges of our day. Many that are familiar to all of us." You'd only be familiar with those challenges if your name was Indiana Jones.

Just Different
Well if you expecting another 'Left Behind' knock off.. this isn't it. Babylon Rising is written from more of a heroic Indiana Jones (as someone put it) perspective than a down-to-earth, true-to-life story. Some parts of the book were off the wall, but it did allow the possibilty of what could be going on in places most of us don't see or know about. I think if you don't expect the realizm that the Left Behind series demonistrated in it's first book, you can enjoy this one. I did.

Not Left Behind
I agree that this is not up to the caliber of the Left Behind series. There are several parts that did not seem quite right, but the story is only beginning to develop. I will still try the next book in the series. And I give LaHaye three stars just for making an attempt at his goal!

Except for the Smuckers guy...
I didn't see that the characters were as bad as others did. In fact, I can't remember a Christian novel before where a good guy actually even THOUGHT about having an alcoholic beverage. Yes, it's squeaky-clean, but would you expect a book from a Christian to have sex?? I'm not sure I buy into the science in the last scene, but it does have an interesting idea...loved the birds...
My biggest gripe is the narrator. I don't know if he's the guy from the Smuckers commercial or not, but I found myself wanting to eat lots of jelly....

Prequel to Left Behind
I think that this book is a very good prequel to the Left Behind series. I think possibly only chrisitans will appreciate what Lahaye is trying to get across to his readers. A maybe of not what may happen in the future but what will happen when the human timeline is left with out any sand left in its sand clock. SO Christians read and understand what will be

Very disappointing
I was very disappointed in this book. It does not begin to match the Left Behind series. It was so unbelieveable. It took over an hour or maybe two just to really understand what was going on with the story. I would have cut it off, but I was traveling and didn't have another story with me. I will not purchase any more of this series.

Fast paced thriller that kept me entertained and looking for excuses to listen to more. Bit of Bible bashing included, but if you can live with that its a great read(listen!) with lots of twists. Went and bought the 2 sequels on the strength of the first book.

Babylon Rising
I found this audiobook very disappointing and just not to my taste at all. It's the sort of storey dreamed up by American evangelist preachers with fake tans and overly coiffured hair. The storey line is not believable and full of unwanted moralizing so that by the end I didn't care if the too-good-to-believe hero was eaten by lions or not.

Hmmm
The story is un-believable, but fairly fast paced due to this. Things just happen and fall into place. One review refered to 'bible bashing', but the story is just the opposite. It's like being at a Sunday surmon, great if that is your thing. I felt I was being preached at.

Worth a listen
I really enjoyed this audio book- it kept me gripped until the end. The characters are a little cheesy and over simplified, but it's not unbearable.
Not quite up to Left Behind standard, but still good.. I'm going ahead with book two anyway.
