Publisher's Summary

Sir Philip Rookwood is the disgrace of the county. He's a rake and an atheist, and the rumors about his hellfire club, the Murder, can only be spoken in whispers. (Orgies. It's orgies.)

Guy Frisby and his sister, Amanda, live in rural seclusion after a family scandal. But when Amanda breaks her leg in a riding accident, she's forced to recuperate at Rookwood Hall, where Sir Philip is hosting the Murder.

Guy rushes to protect her, but the Murder aren't what he expects. They're educated, fascinating people, and the notorious Sir Philip turns out to be charming, kind - and dangerously attractive.

In this private space where anything goes, the longings Guy has stifled all his life are impossible to resist...and so is Philip. But all too soon, the rural rumor mill threatens both Guy and Amanda. The innocent country gentleman has lost his heart to the bastard baronet - but does he dare lose his reputation too?

Contains mature themes.

KJ and Cornell Collins winning combo.

What a great combination of
Narrator and Author.
I Very much liked this.
He also narrated the Magpie Lord series so this reminds me a bit of that.

A Delicious MM Regency Tale

KJ Charles does a beautiful job with this sweet Regency tale of an honorable and virginal country gentleman and the disreputable man he falls in love with. I loved the narrator's voices, especially Guy's.

Read at your own risk.

I hope this author has enough books to sustain my new addiction! Now every Gay Romance book before it seems subpar, and I'm not sure what I'm going to do once I've devoured the rest of what this author has to offer! Not too mention the voice actor that elevated the story through the damn roof! Just take my money already! Please let there be MORE!...

Absolutely delightful!

I'm unclear on why I haven't relistened to this before now. I loved it the first time and I loved it more now. I can only assume that it got lost in my list of Charles's relistens, but it is definitely going into that yearly roster from now on. I caught so much more this time too. It makes me want to just continuously listen to her well-narrated books on loop.

This was delicious! I am so in love with everything about this book. I think we all need a Lord Phillip, and friends, and Guy and Amanda in our lives. Just absolutely delightful. *is giddily happy*

Audio: As always I enjoy Collins's work. It did feel a little big at times, but I'm wondering if that's more me listening to other people's complaints than anything actually in the book. Loved it even more this time, I mustn't let other's opinions cloud my enjoyment.

Great book and listen! Guy and Amanda discover what really happens at Sir Phillip’s house parties.

When Amanda breaks her leg on Sir Phillip’s land, she and Guy are forced to stay at the notorious man’s house for several weeks. Sir Phillip and his friends are having a house party where they are free to be who they are and love who they want. The group of friends called the “Murder” resent being interrupted by the siblings until they get to know them. A sweet, sexy, gay historical romance.

Loved it! Collins is Excellent

Just as delightful as everyone says! KJ Charles is always clever, but Philip is one of her best. Great chemistry between him and Guy and their exchanges are so funny and often poignant.

Friends have suggested that Cornell Collins' performance in the audio version is a bit too formal and staid. I can see that and I'll bet reading it would be twice as good. Hopefully I'll be able to make the time soon.

Good about consent

Low angst house party - after a leg injury is on the mend. I like the author but only picked this up (not being in my audible package) after seeing a tweet commenting on how ‘spraining an ankle turned into an extensive visit leading to marriage, back in the day.’ This is that plot🤣. It also takes on the feuding families & virgin/whore dynamics - more sensibly than most.

It’s fine but less adventurous than some others they’ve written. Some of the secondary characters were a little thin but I guess that leaves room for the author to flesh them out more fully in future books. (Plus a 6-fingered man!) What it excels at is consent, informed discussion, personal passions, & found family.I was very relieved when the “we need to split up for appearances” talk squashed any misunderstanding immediately. Soul cleansing sensibility there.

Steam: Medium-low. Despite starring an “oh hey, I’m gay? Guess so” virgin, there is low drama about the fact of it. The book concentrates more on the pleasure of discovery than the fears, which helps the low angst vibe. M/M/M is discussed but not shown on page. M/M action happens on page but remains low key, for all the neighborhood’s speculation about degeneracy. There’s some budding d/s kink starting out but these guys go a little slow since Guy is new to romance of any sort.

Narration: Good, except there are several instances where phrase endings audibly fall off as if the microphone got out of range. Some reviewers questioned the Jewish doctor’s accent but I didn’t find it heavy handed & it helped to differentiate speakers. I usually like the narrator, though, so consider that.

I think this is my absolute favourite audiobook!

Love this story and the narration. Love, friendship, debauching, tree-climbing, portrait-painting, stone monsters and more.

Brilliant!!

Audio Review

Well done Cornell Collins aka Matthew Lloyd Davies for restoring my faith in narrators. I loved this story so much, and to be honest, was quite annoyed when I saw who was narrating it BUT pulled up my big girl pants and decided to take a chance on it. FAB-U-LOUS!! I particularly liked his voice for Lord Corvin, although his West Indian accent for John Raven could do with some work [sounded more Welsh than anything 😉]. Aunt Beatrice was suitably awful...as was her dreadful husband, and the Reverend whatever his name was, predictably boring. I absolutely ADORE Guy, Sir Philip and especially that little strumpet of a sister Amanda. Fantastic.

Book Review

5 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 from me...oh, and 5 💜💛💙💚🧡 too for Philip and Guy's lovely, gentle romance.

The laughs, the sarcasm, the naughty Latin words [former bored Latin scholar here hehe], the comeuppance for the dreadful Aunt Beatrice 😝, but most of all the brilliant Murder [read the story, you'll then understand the reference] Hellfire Club and more importantly its witty members, who were supportive of Philip to a man.

Lots of authors try to imitate KJ Charles, but she reigns supreme as far as this reader is concerned for her marvellous wit and delicious characters. Bravo!!

Just wonderful!

I absolutely loved this book. Philip and Guy were so perfect together, and Guy’s progression from diffident, unsure innocent to loving and accepting Philip’s love, albeit having to rely on Latin and ancient Greek when he couldn’t bring himself to say the words in English, was a delight. So funny and tender too. What fun The Murder sound; best house party ever. And, of course, Cornell Collins’ narration was quite, quite brilliant. He had me from the first paragraph, such a heavenly voice. I found the whole thing more moving and enjoyable than I could ever have expected (being a slightly batty, middle aged woman who devours Georgette Heyer’s novels for their dashing heroes and witty banter). This had all that, and more sex of course, with a MM romance as glorious as any I have ever read. Loved it

A jewel of a book

I love the description "Heyer-but-gayer". Of all the regency romances I have read, this is the first one I have found as funny and satisfying as an actual Georgette, albeit with a lot more sex. It's also a fun twist on the plot of Venetia, with the brother being the love interest instead of the sister. Heyer fans will enjoy spotting all the similarities in both characters and setup.

Wonderful narration too. Don't expect anything too heavyweight, but it's a delight from beginning to end.

OK

An OK tale of a country house party in the 'shires featuring a scandalous novel, a deflowering, a broken leg, several rakes, an outraged aunt and an orchestra. The excellent narration hypes the drama within the story which is actually quite dull and not up to the true zest and spice of Regency life and other historic novels of the genre ie These Old Shades or The Talisman Ring by Georgette Heyer. There is a lack of sumptuous description of interiors, environs and outfits, even small clothes divested during the MM interludes. No where near as good as Any Old Diamonds. Guy and Philip are actually insipid MCs. NOT UP TO SNUFF

An absolutely ravishing read

I cannot express how delightful this book is. Not only does it beautifully cover queer romance and sex, but also prioritises consent, explores ethical non-monogamy, and manages to be wonderfully witty and funny throughout. The narration is exceptional, perfectly capturing all the different characters. Can not recommend it enough.

You had me at orgies!

KJ Charles, you had me at orgies!

What a sinfully delicious book! In the last year I have become a big fan of KJ Charles, and particularly the audiobooks. I have been waiting for this one to come out in audio, and it was worth every second of the wait.

The debaucher. The debauchee. The badarse woman. All of them thumbing their nose at convention, and doing it in a delightful way.

This was a fun regency-style romp that had me smiling and laughing in some most inappropriate social situations.

I love this narrator. Cornell Collins has that great balance of naivety and sauciness. He made me feel like I was sitting in the drawing room, drinking tea (or in the case of these characters, something a lot stronger).

This book made a road trip in the rain this weekend all the more enjoyable. I hope we get more light hearted rom-comish stories in the future.

Not my cup of tea

I’m not really into this type of book. If you like gay romances this is for you
