Story
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

In the 25th century, humans have conquered space. The advent of faster-than-light travel has opened up hundreds of habitable planets for colonization, and humans have exploited the virtually limitless space and resources for hundreds of years with impunity. So complacent have they become with the overabundance that armed conflict is a thing of the past, and their machines of war are obsolete and decrepit. What would happen if they were suddenly threatened by a terrifying new enemy?

Story
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

Serving aboard a mighty starship, he’d be able to defend his planet - and his family - when, inevitably, they came again.

Publisher's Summary
This war was inevitable.
After two brutal, bloody struggles for their very existence against implacable alien foes, humanity is victorious, but not at peace.
As distrust and accusations consume the political discourse between the two major factions, the Eastern Star Alliance military has already begun executing small raiding missions into United Terran Federation space. The Federation fleet, still reeling from the last war, is in no shape to try and protect its own borders.
Now, as diplomacy crumbles and tensions escalate, the ESA has moved into a Federation star system and declared it for themselves. Desperate, the Federation deploys a full task force commanded by Admiral Jackson Wolfe to try and defuse the situation, hoping his reputation forces calmer heads to prevail. Wolfe knows that even if he can stop the ESA here, the die has been cast. Humanity's march to war with itself cannot be stopped.
Battleground is the first book in the final trilogy of the Black Fleet Saga.

Good, but not for everyone
The book was well written, and the narrator has a great voice and reads well. I really wanted to like this book because I love starship military sci-fi. Yet, this was too heavy on the politics building and too large in the cast of characters. At times I wished I had a flow chart to keep track of who was who as the story was told from several perspectives. The action was limited by a lot of discussion by a lot of characters about what happened and what they think might happen. Now, I don't like to bad mouth a book, especially when the writer clearly worked very hard to create a very deep and detailed story. So, If you like books that have multiple key characters, conspiracies, political backstabbing, and a lot of analytical discussions, then I'm sure you will love this book. If not, then it may not be for you.

Another Great Story
I got lucky when I got the first Black Fleet novel and was immediately interested in what else this author had to offer. I have read and listened to so many books at this point in my life, that I’d like to think I can tell the difference between good writers and bad writers. Joshua Dalzelle does for science fiction what Bernard Cornwell does with historical fiction. While some of the story can be a bit predictable, it doesn’t matter as he creates a compelling universe and wonderful characters that you begin to truly root for and feel for throughout. I wish that there could be Jackson Wolfe books coming for years to come, but understand that isn’t possible. Luckily Omega Force is there and will continue as well as the new Terran Scout Fleet books. If you enjoy sci-fi I highly recommend you look at all of Dalzelle’s work as he is consistent beyond measure.

I was hoping for another story
The last book (Destroyer) ended with contact of the race how build the Phage had an interest of Jackson Wolfe. I was hoping for a storyline about that. And thought this story to be strange after the alien wars the humans have fought they shouldn't be going to war with the different human factions at once as they did.

as a confirmed Star Trek fan, I was dubious of a series of books incorporating language like "Warp", "Star Fleet" and "Federation". but Dalzelle manages to navigate these landmines superbly and creates a gripping narrative that stands alone rather than being another "poor man's Star Trek".

I greatly enjoy the previous two trillogies and have been waiting for the first of the next one with great anticipation. The added Miss Marple thread was most enjoyable and then went nowhere. Or, I hope, to the start of book 2. I wouldn't trust Lt Trapp as far as I could throw her underwear.

Excellent book marred by clunky character
I’ve really adored the last six books.
I’m really struggling to understand how this new character was added to the story. Perhaps by committee afterwards? By the end I was begging the author that she be dropped as a red herring but no, she’s everything she looked like she’d be the moment she was added. It’s a pity, the rest is more of the same grown and mature carefully through the last two series.

We are bob (we are legion) level of awesome.
If you enjoyed "we are bob (we are legion)" i think you will enjoy this.
i personally enjoyed it . but it was ok really. id probably listened again, but only for lack of something new.
Narrators work was good. I have very much enjoyed his history narrative of 'race of aces', and 'the admirals'. His vocal differences between people, or male to female, is rough, but good enough.
Authers work was good and interesting.
All in all 4 stars because great, but not epic in my opinion.
