Publisher's Summary
From board-certified psychiatrist and social media star Dr. Jessica Clemons, a.k.a. “Dr. Jess”, comes Be Well, a comprehensive, accessible guide to the most common mental health conditions, treatments, and overcoming the stigma surrounding these topics to seek out the care you and your loved ones deserve.
Most of us know how to take care of ourselves physically - we do our best to exercise, eat well, and get enough sleep - but when it comes to our inner lives, we tend to be far less diligent. Not only do we move through our unrelenting to-do lists with no time and space to recharge, we’re not even aware of many of the (often invisible) symptoms affecting the tens of millions of Americans living with mental illness.
Dr. Jess is working every day to change that. A New York City psychiatrist and social media star, she’s made it her mission to make mental health care universally accessible and to reduce stigma associated with mental illness, particularly in the Black community. Be Well is an informative, inspiring audio experience that will teach listeners all about anxiety, depression, therapy, daily practices for more mindful living, navigating the health-care system, and much more.
No matter where you are on your mental health journey, Be Well is the perfect primer for understanding and maintaining this critical (and too often overlooked) element of wellness.

Imagine a 1980s world of sumptuous hotel rooms, restaurants, New York City penthouses, and the powerful men who move easily between these pinnacles of luxury. They are music producers, rock stars, writers, and restaurateurs. They are household names like Billy Joel, Art Garfunkel, Eric Clapton, and Sting. And yet, each man has an entire aspect to his life that he doesn’t talk about publicly—his depression, his rocky marriage, his feelings of shame and failure, his private loss of faith. And now: The phone rings. Imagine the woman who has each of these men at her beck and call.

Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

The Notorious B.I.G. was one of the most charismatic and talented artists of the 1990s. Born Christopher Wallace and raised in Clinton Hill/Bed Stuy, Brooklyn, Biggie lived an almost archetypal rap life. Biggie released his first record, Ready to Die, in 1994, when he was only 22. Less than three years later, he was killed just days before the planned release of his second record Life After Death. Journalist Justin Tinsley’s It Was All a Dream is a fresh, insightful telling of the life beyond the legend.

A good production with concerns over motive
One thing to note is that I did not know the author prior to listening, as the production was included (read free) material in my subscription. The production is largely a good one with topics that are important to discuss. It is a good exercise, however, to ask what the motive is. And no part of a piece is more telling about motive than the beginning and end. And the author starts the book about the difficulties of her upbringing and ends with her defense of using social media for her practice. One especially personal story in the production is where she received criticism from a colleague for her glamour shots and use of social media. I would be lying if I knew what the colleague said; but I do have an initial question to ask the author regarding her work, and it might relate to your colleague. What do you want to be? A practitioner or a celebrity? And this is a fair criticism that the likes Dr. Phil and Dr. Oz have dealt with...
