Story
Meg Gorton finds herself alone and lonely in Florida. Three years earlier, she packed what she could fit into her sister's car, told her husband, Gary, where he could find her, and asked him to take care of Moses, their beloved black Labrador. For years, she’d tried to talk Gary into moving away from Woodstock, Virginia. They both needed a fresh start after a painful loss, and when their grandson graduates from high school, Meg knows it’s time. But Meg also knows that if she wants a new beginning, she’ll have to do it alone.

I was born and broken in Birkenhead, abused from infancy by a network of every kind of pervert from ‘thinks it’s love’ to ‘show it hurts’. I was unwanted, beaten, sold, swapped, photographed, filmed, left for dead, corrupted, blamed, betrayed, ignored and orphaned. But I was also born with a fire inside me. I call it my Phoenix Fire. I am no victim—that word only describes what happened to me. Nor am I a survivor because that implies I am over it. I am a Phoenix—a work in progress. This is my story....

Story
Shaneda Daly was only 6 years old when her father started grooming her. For more than 10 years, he would go on to sexually abuse and rape his daughter at least once a day. In her house of doom, the emotional and physical toll on Shaneda was immense. Eventually, her ex-army and prison officer father admitted to his family what he had been doing, agreeing to leave home to get help. Returning after only a year, he was welcomed back, apparently a changed man. With no choice but to accept it, Shaneda lived alongside him again only for him to try and abuse her once more.

Suzanne suffered five heart attacks and made it through open heart surgery. But even that pales in comparison to the horrors she faced as a young girl. Her childhood became the ‘stuff of nightmares’ after her father passed away and her mother, unable to get a job in Ireland, had to seek work in London. So ‘Mammy’ was forced into the heart-breaking decision to put Suzanne and her five siblings into church-run orphanages in Dublin while she worked away. It was just meant to be temporary.

Tara Westover was 17 the first time she set foot in a classroom. Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, she prepared for the end of the world by stockpiling home-canned peaches. In the summer she stewed herbs for her mother, a midwife and healer, and in the winter she salvaged in her father's junkyard. Her father forbade hospitals, so Tara never saw a doctor or nurse. Gashes and concussions, even burns from explosions, were all treated at home with herbalism. Then, lacking any formal education, Tara began to educate herself. Her quest for knowledge transformed her.

Story
Seven Bones is the story of one of the more bizarre murder investigations in Australia’s history. Two wives die in suspicious circumstances: co-incidence or, as husband Thomas Keir describes it, ‘bad luck’? Three years after Thomas Keir alleged his first wife, Jean, deserted him and her young son for another man, his second wife, Rosalina, Jean’s cousin, lay scorched and strangled on her bed. Arriving on the scene, Detective Peter Seymour realised he was either dealing with the world’s unluckiest husband or a serial wife killer.

In the beginning, they lived like nomads, moving among Southwest desert towns, camping in the mountains. Rex was a charismatic, brilliant man who, when sober, captured his children's imagination. Rose Mary painted and wrote and couldn't stand the responsibility of providing for her family; she called herself an "excitement addict."

Beautifully written, inspiring story
This book had so many different facets to it. Shelly went through a lot of really difficult things in her childhood, and her adult life, and the way that she walks us through the story, but does it in such a sensitive way to help us still have hope and to feel inspired, it’s amazing. This is a memoir every adult needs to read. And I loved the narrators performance! This is the first one of her books that I’ve listen to and she is phenomenal. I’m gonna look for more books by this narrator too.

Soggy Slog
I cannot believe the number of five-star ratings ladled out for this seemingly endless soap opera. Author Jorgensen's early home life was undoubtedly a horror show but much of the ill fortune that subsequently befalls her is self-inflicted. Why would she willingly enter the home of a man who had sexually abused her on two previous occasions? And where is her back bone? She accepts the ill treatment inflicted on her by family and casual acquaintance alike, apparently unwilling to offer the slightest resistance to thievery or bullying.
Her writing style is contrived and comes off sounding like an adolescent effort at English composition, with frequent servings of purple prose thrown in for good measure. She should devote more attention to grammar than to literary devices so she doesn't find herself using "me" when "I" is the correct form, or forcing an adjective to do the work of an adverb. These are not gross errors but they lend an air of clumsiness to her writing.
Narration is ok if you can get past Pilcher's little girl voice quality.

Such an amazing story of lies, betrayal, loss, awakening, healing and overcoming. A powerful testament of the strength that can be born of pain, resilience, and faith. This book was so hard to put down. The heartbreak of her family falling apart, the shocking revelation of her childhood experiences and the inspiring fight to stop the blame and break through knowing none of what has happened his her fault. I have not been through half of what Shelly has endured but I feel her words have encouraged me to forgive, let it go. What a great memoir!

Amazing Book! So relevant to society today!!
I can only compare the books, “Glass Castles” by Jeanette Walls or “Educated” by Tara Westover to “Beautiful Ashes” by Shelly Edwards Jorgensen! Shelly is the most amazing woman, able to overcome anything that has come her way. To read this story is to open your heart and mind to the brutal realities of this world and learn from it. You will find yourself applying the lessons taught by Shelly into your own life and find additional strength, conviction and faith to make it through anything. A true classic on how to handle adversity and come out smiling on the other side!
