Publisher's Summary

Dr. John Bargh, the world's leading expert on the unconscious mind, presents a groundbreaking book, 20 years in the making, that gives us an entirely new understanding of the hidden mental processes that secretly govern every aspect of our behavior.

For more than three decades, Dr. John Bargh has been responsible for the revolutionary research into the unconscious mind, research that informed best sellers like Blink and Thinking Fast and Slow. Now, in what Dr. John Gottman said "will be the most important and exciting book in psychology that has been written in the past 20 years", Dr. Bargh takes us on an entertaining and enlightening tour of the forces that affect everyday behavior while transforming our understanding of ourselves in profound ways.

Telling personal anecdotes with infectious enthusiasm and disclosing startling and delightful discoveries, Dr. Bargh takes the listener into his labs at New York University and Yale where he and his colleagues have discovered how the unconscious guides our behavior, goals, and motivations in areas like race relations, parenting, business, consumer behavior, and addiction. He reveals what science now knows about the pervasive influence of the unconscious mind in who we choose to date or vote for, what we buy, where we live, how we perform on tests and in job interviews, and much more. Because the unconscious works in ways we are completely unaware of, Before You Know It is full of surprising and entertaining revelations as well as tricks to help you remember to-do items, shop smarter, and sleep better.

Destined to be a best seller, Before You Know It is an intimate introduction to a fabulous world only recently discovered, the world that exists below the surface of your awareness and yet is the key to knowing yourself and unlocking new ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving.

Political jab

Looked forward to listening to this book. If you are a liberal Trump hater you will get a kick out of this book. Tried to keep an open mind but he just goes on and on with his political opinion. Thought that this would be enlightening but got tired of his “platform”. Returned because I don’t want to pass my money on to this writer. Good writer just can’t control himself.

An important, life changing book.

Do we truly understand why we do the things we do? If you aren't sure, then you should listen to or read this book. Dr. Bargh shows through a systematic exploration of many years of scientific discoveries in his lab as well as the in the psychological and neurological sciences that much of our actions are influenced by factors beyond our awareness. He presents a clear picture of how we can become more effective by understanding how these unconscious mechanisms work. For example he shows how unconscious behavior can lead to deadly consequences in law enforcement, and how simple thought procedures can result in fewer violent encounters. It can be a scary thought (as evident by the negative reviews) that much of our behavior is beyond our conscious control. But, if you are willing to go where the scientific evidence takes you, this book can be an excellent guide to improving both the understanding and quality of your life.

pretty decent book with global warming scaring

I think he's got some pretty good research but I am tired of the liberal agenda continually being put into books it's almost as if these guys are writing these books to get their political agenda across will tell you interesting Neuroscience if you listen to our political agenda rants. at least he was honest about it up front so I could prepare my filtration system against propaganda

Turned a needed storyline into an anti conservative bit of dribble

Too bad the narration is great. The writer is a political hack using this apolitical subject to drone on about his personal opinions.

Don't waste your time

Generalities and biased language seem to be the hallmark of Bargh's 'research'. Save your credit, there are much better choices.

down to earth and grounded in solid research

I admire this author, especially in contrast to so many other personalities who philosophize in the consciousness space.

This book is for anyone who wants to know what's going on under the surface in their own minds.

Selective with facts

Dr. Bargh is fast with facts when it supports his narrative but regularly drops in completely unsupported statements. Don’t waste your time on this one.
