Publisher's Summary

Blackboard best-selling author Beverly Jenkins is "headed for superstar status in romance," according to the Detroit Free Press.

Tavern manager Leah Barnett can scarcely believe the path that destiny has chosen for her. Travelling from Boston to Colorado, Leah has come to face Ryder Damien, the son of her mother's recently deceased lover. Ryder, an angry, ruggedly sexy man, is incensed that this woman will inherit his father's fortune-even if he hadn't seen the man in 30 years. But Leah's charms are many, and soon anger is the last thing in Ryder's heart.

This just might be my favorite

At this point, I’ve read/listened to nine (9) of Ms. Jenkins books. They’ve all been both entertaining and informative. ‘Before the Dawn,’ however, might just be my favorite. Not only was the love story between Leah and Ryder romantic and steamy, the murder mystery was intriguing (I was able to wear my sleuth hat).I love a good mystery. Though I’d figured out who the culprit was long before it was revealed, the actual revelation was unexpected. I didn’t see any of it coming. My mouth hung open in shock and surprise at the conclusion of the mystery. I doubt that anyone could’ve predicted ‘it.’ Also, the final court room scenes was excellent. It was written so well that I was transported into the room and could see the drama unfold as I stood there and watched. And lastly, the intense, brooding, sexy Ryder is by far my favorite of Ms. Jenkins male (hero) characters. Thomas Penny did an amazing job with Ryder’s voice. Sexy as hell. Both the writing and narration for this book were impeccable. Bravo.

Great story

I always enjoy this narrator. The story is a bit far fetched but still super enjoyable. I wish they would use the original cover art. I hate when the people don’t look anything like the people in the story. That’s just my 2 cents.

Entertaining!

Very interesting prospective of a storyline involving characters from a minority background. Well-written and thoroughly entertaining novel. I will look for more from this author.

Typical love.

The female voices were too husky and they all sounded the same. In chapter 9 Leah, wearing Ryder's shirt wanted
to make the coffee but wondered if "Cecil" and Mabel were downstairs ( I thought the older couple were named Sam and Mabel.) "Cecil" was the deceased friend of Leah's now deceased stepdad, Louis. The editor and proof reader
must had overlooked this infraction/misprint. Leah did not speak with an English dialect. A lot of empty phony rhetoric.

Love and History a great combination

I love love love the romance in this book. The history lesson on the intersection between Native Americans and Black Americans was top rate, The introduction of Black Americans moving to Mexico to escape Jim Crop introduced a topic that would be great for future Beverly Jenkins books.

The interaction between Leah and Ryder drove me crazy, in a good way. Two strong and interesting characters with many facets, flaws and perfections. I love how they loved each other. Sam was a calming and charming character. He was great. I wish I had a Sam in my life.

On the edge

Loved this book. The mystery, the history and the passion of course. Very different from her other books but enjoyable cliffhanger until the end.
