Publisher's Summary

A powerful, moving true story from Sunday Times best seller Maggie Hartley, Britain's most-loved foster carer. Perfect for fans of Cathy Glass and Casey Watson.

Foster carer Maggie Hartley is finally enjoying a well-earned holiday from fostering, savouring time with her brand-new baby granddaughter. One night, though, the peace and quiet is interrupted by an urgent call from Social Services. A man has been stabbed, and Social Services need to find an emergency placement for his little girl.

Maggie is used to children arriving on her doorstep at all times of the day and night, but nothing can prepare her for the sight of 11-year-old Nancy. The little girl arrives in her pyjamas, covered in blood and mute with shock. With her mother missing and her father in intensive care, the police are desperate for answers.

Who stabbed Nancy's father? Where is her mother? And what is Nancy hiding about her seemingly perfect family? The longer Maggie spends with her little girl, the clearer it becomes that all is not as it seems. Can Maggie discover the terrible truth of what's been happening behind closed doors?

Narration boring

Maggie's stories are always very predictable. I'm pretty sure she is not a foster carer herself, but uses other people's stories.
Also Maggie's stories are way too much about her. How on earth would any case be solved without her. She is a detective too.
The narrator tries too hard to sound posh. You can hear It in her voice.
The French accent in this story sounded more German in parts.
Sorry, just a try hard book.

One of Maggie’s best books. Couldn’t put it down.

It was a gripping story, but also easy like all of Maggie’s books. So it is perfect for when you don’t want to work too hard. The child was lovely, and it was comforting to enter Maggie’s world again. It’s one of her best books, and I highly recommend it. The narrator is great, as always.

The reason I gave it 4* instead of 5* is for one reason only. Something about it really grated on me and I found it actually offensive. We are repeatedly told the child’s mother was emotionally abused, and that emotional abuse is just as damaging as physical abuse. Whilst this is true, the mother was repeatedly raped and was tortured with physical punishments. That’s not emotional abuse. That’s domestic violence, physical and sexual abuse of the highest form. I feel it didn’t acknowledge the horror of that relationship, and it was said over a dozen times so it wasn’t a typo. It really got to me.

Amazing story

I love the Maggie Hartley books, they have opened my eyes to some of the heartbreak that children in the care system have to deal with. her books have given me the push to become a foster carer, I can't have children of my own, but I'm great with kids and have many nieces and nephews and a lot of the tips Maggie suggests works great as 2 of my nephews have Autism. those heart breaking, the stories that Maggie wrote about are so important, not just for carers or parents but for anyone who looks after children. sometimes it's hard to spot when something is wrong if you don't know a child well, she says it's important to listen to your instincts and if you see or hear anything always follow it up as you could save a child's life.

heartwarming!

I found the actually story really touching but I was off by the accent of the narration at times for found her voices quiet comical which didn't really go with the vibe of the book!

Excellently written and narrated

What happened to Helen is very similar to what happened to me many years ago so it was very upsetting at times to hear the story of what she and Nancy went through. The book is well written as always by Maggie and is very well narrated by Penny MacDonald, who is excellent at accents and truly gives each character their own individual voice, bringing the story alive.

Interesting but not fast paced

Interesting account of a true story but not super action packed so I wasn't hanging off every word or anything. It was an entertaining listen though, and made me wonder how many other women are in a similar position.
