Story
These thirteen stories are our own lives, inside out. A boy's summer romance doesn't end in that good kind of heartbreak, but in blood. A girl on a fishing trip makes a friend in the woods, except then that friend follows her back to the city. A father hears a voice through his baby monitor that shouldn't be possible, but now he can't stop listening. From prison guards making unholy alliances to snake-oil men in the Old West doling out justice, these stories carve down into the body of the mind, into our most base fears and certainties, and there's no anesthetic.

Story
Midnight. Some call it the witching hour. Others call it the devil’s hour. Here in the graveyard, midnight is a very special time. It is a time when ghostly spirits are at their strongest, when the veil between our world and theirs is at its thinnest. Legend has it, that while most of the world is asleep, the lack of prayers allow the spirits to communicate under the cover of darkness, among the headstones, their whispers rustling in the leaves of the old oak trees. But if you’re here in the graveyard, you can tell yourself it’s just the wind....

definitely behind dark doors
my favorite story was with a cell phone and a boy and a man don't want to give away any spoilers but all of the stories were extremely interesting and Susan May has a way of explaining her stories and where they came from or what inspired her. Following the rules is an important rule that children need to learn. Hollis McCarthy did a great job of narrating also, and the way Susan gives credit to her also is refreshing. This is a book you should definitely read, it will make you think!

fresh new experience
I decided to purchase this book on audible because of the narrator Hollis McCarthy, who did a fabulous job BTW. Because of Hollis I've decided this author is someone that I would like to explore more, Susan May's style of writing I think can resonate with anyone, it's so cool and fresh. I really enjoyed her style of writing, I think it can resonate with anyone, it's so cool and fresh. I have never listened to a book full of short stories before, it's such a variety, some murder mystery, sci fi, time travel, just awesome content. Bravo ladies, excellent job, highly recommended to everyone!

Checking under my bed for monsters
What an imagination Ms. May has. Every book that I have read of hers is unique. The stories in Behind Dark Doors brought me back a few years when my kids were in their Goose Bumps phase. Like R. L. Stine May has a way of making the things that go bump in the night seem plausible. They really do make you feel like Rod Serling is going to announce that you are entering The Twilite Zone. I love the way the narrator, Hollis McCarthy read these stories. The children sounded like children. Each character and there were many had their own voice. That is a true talent. I think what I enjoyed the most was the personal anecdotes that May told about how a story came to be written.

Behind Dark Doors
Susan May has quickly become one of my favorite authors when I want to read something slightly creepy or otherworldly with a Twilight Zone feel.
This collection of short tales explores those things that are hidden behind dark doors: ghosts, aliens, time travel (and its consequences), and just plain creepiness. Most of the stories have a twisted sense of irony about them, as in, be careful what you hope for. They also touch on timely themes, such as bullying. the implications of messing with Mother Nature, and PTSD.
I especially enjoy the fact that Ms. May has what she calls the Imagination Vault at the end of each of her stories. I always enjoying hearing where she gets her ideas. Some of these tales would make wonderful longer length books and I hope that Ms. May revisits some of these works.
Hollis McCarthy does a wonderful job (as usual) with her narration and her pacing and voices adds a lot to the listener's enjoyment.

Creepy and clever!
For me, one of the hallmarks of a good writer is how they handle a short story. Susan May excels at this! Each story has its roots in typical human emotion, but has excellent dark twists. As a life long lover of thrillers, shes a new favorite author for me.

Very entertaining
A great selection of short stories by this author. I couldn't believe it when I got to the end, I was waiting for more and didn't realise I'd listened to them all, the time passed so quickly! I love the explanation of how Susan came up with ideas for each one, this made the stories even more interesting. I have another book of Susan's, "Best Seller" which I'm really looking forward to starting now after this imaginative taster of her very descriptive writing style. I'd definitely recommend this book and really enjoyed Holly McCarthy's excellent narration too.

Great if you’re a story-dipper
I often think that short stories are so under-rated and often overlooked. Whereas in reality they’re a difficult thing to get right. They need to able to stand on their own feet, and not just exist as that under-height cousin in the family photo.
This collection more than fills its stature. It’s a decent sized collection of stories with a supernatural twist, as defined by Susan May’s writing. And she does it well. They’re great for listening to in the car - just right for a journey to work.
I especially like this author’s work as she lets the story tell itself without gratuitous violence or sex, something that often find it’s way into this genre. I’d even suggest she could appeal to the upper aged young adult bracket - not an easy age group.
I also liked the explanation of each story and how they were conceived. It’s always fascinating to hear an author explain how a story or character takes over when being written.
First-class narration too.
