Publisher's Summary
The sensational new psychological thriller from the internationally best-selling author of The Girl Before.
Claire Wright likes to play other people.
A British drama student, in New York without a green card, Claire takes the only job she can get: working for a firm of divorce lawyers, posing as an easy pick-up in hotel bars to entrap straying husbands.
When one of her targets becomes the subject of a murder investigation, the police ask Claire to use her acting skills to help lure their suspect into a confession. But right from the start, she has doubts about the part she's being asked to play. Is Patrick Fogler really a killer.... Or the only decent husband she's ever met? And is there more to this set-up than she's being told?
And that's when Claire realises she's playing the deadliest role of her life....

Don't perform, act.
If 'The Girl Before' were a clean delineated Rothko, then 'Believe Me' is a frenetic Jackson Pollock.
There is so much going on in this book, that until the end, you're never quite sure what to believe, or who. Which I suppose is the point! A jolly well made point too :)
Whilst the plot is pretty implausible, it's still a very exciting story that I just couldn't stop listening to. Having worked in psychological profiling before, I found the parts based upon behavioural analysis good fun. I very much look forward to more by JP Delaney.
First class narration from all involved, crazy, twisty story, poor audio editing. There are at least 3 whole sections of chapters that are duplicated during the recording. Whilst it is something that can be overlooked, it does take you out of the story somewhat while you figure out what's gone wrong. I do hope that Audible fix their recording and re-upload it for future listeners.
Please do not allow the recording oversight to deter you from purchasing this book.

Please don't let this be the new narration style!!
I love this author but could not even listen past the first 4 chapters. A movie sound track narration. Are we not meant to use our imaginations for anything? I will have to sample and steer clear of this style. Audible please don't do this to me.

Borderline Ridiculous
This wasn't a good listen at all. The characterisation is very weak and plot is overwhelming. It starts as a mystery, then turns into a love story. The ending was ridiculous.
Spoiler alert!
The real mystery for me was not the identity of the killer but how Claire, a broke wannabe actress paid her hospital bills in USA, where healthcare isn't free.
The only positive thing in this book is the details about Charles Baudelaire

Believe Me
It started so well, Claire, a wannabe actress studying at the impressive Actors' Studio in NYC, is working as a honeytrap to elicit some income. She gets involved with Professor Patrick Fogler, whom she'd tried, unsuccessfully, to pick up the very way his wife is brutally murdered.
So ... The perspectives changed and it morphed into a film noir. What or who was real? The constant references to the erotic poems of Charles Baudelaire got a bit wearing after a while. I gave up half way through and then picked it back up a week or so later. Now I've finished it, do I have a clue what the plot was? Nope.

Trashy sound effects
A marginally plausible plot is turned into a comic book detective story by the use of some really awful location scenes with trashy sound effects. In places it is akin to a matinee radio play.

Interesting start, not sure about the ending
I really enjoyed the character - being an actor myself I could relate, however the story started getting a bit surreal and taking weird twists to the point where I started feeling everything was a bit unbelievable. The story gripped me from the beginning but by the end I’d stopped believing. I also had to get past the narrator’s bad American accents.

Hated it!!!!!!
I brought this book because i enjoyed the authors previous book - "The Girl Before." But this book was really bad for me and theres nothing about it i liked. It wasnt gripping or exciting and I really disliked the main character even though the character was playing a character.... I was glad when it finished.

Believe me - give it a miss
Cliched characterization, a truly ridiculous storyline, literary pretensions and grating narration made this a most disappointing listen.

A frustrating read.....
An irritating main character and too much ambiguity make this book frustrating.
A lack of credibility in the storyline makes it beyond frustrating and instead into a waste of 10 hours!
Sorry, but best avoided.

Scarily good
It seemed very slow and confusing to start with. However it's so delicious, you don't know who to believe. Who is acting? Who is telling the truth? Or both? It's very well worth a listen or a read.

Variation on a theme with literary twist
An interesting follow up to the ‘Girl Before’ and in a similar genre with parallel male-female roles. A good read for those that like stories rather than literary challenges. Ideally suited to film and TV adaptations. This one reads on part like a radio play. All in all very enjoyable and relaxing. Narration quite good with a few twists to keep you guessing. As for Beaudelaire, well now that sounds more challenging!!

tried a bit too hard
I enjoyed the first half quite a bit but felt the author tried too hard to surprise the audience. sometimes less is more. quite well performed.

Confusing with too much subjective violence
I nearly gave up many times finding it too gruesome sometimes. I sort of guessed the ending but not it’s full implications and am still guessing at the truth

great
I'm looking forward to re- reading this one, i think its the kind of book that will take you on two different adventures the first & second time around. I found myself getting too confused towards the end, but the author ties up just enough lose ends to make it "click" without spelling it all out.
the narrator was mostly great but made some rookie accent mistakes, the American pronounciation of "Stella" for instance kept breaking the illusion for me. but the emotive performance was great, i know understand are very hard

Another hit for JP Delaney
This book keeps you thinking the whole way through. When you think you have solved it a new twist. Well written. Would definitely recommend.
