IT IS AS FAR AS IT IS

SHE HAD LET HER MIND WONDER, SO HAD MISSED A TRANSITION
Wow, the characters in the book had the same problem I had. My mind wondered, no matter how hard I tried to concentrate. Book one, was good, maybe they should not have changed authors?
HER SMILE WAS AS COLD AND DEADLY AS FATE.

The series ends here for me.

Great continuation of this Star Trek 50th Anniversary Trilogy

David Mack does an excellent job of continuing this story of intrigue, loyalty, and deception. His characterizations are both accurate and yet startling as the conflicts continue to rise and raise in tempo and intensity (specifically the Kirk/Sarek and McCoy/daughter relationships). I'm amazed how two different writers (first Cox and now Mack) seamlessly construct a story that unites a theme and an overall vision for the trilogy. I highly anticipate reading the next one and enjoying the conclusion to this fantastic Star Trek trilogy.

Great sequel

Definitely an edge of your seat action packed adventure. Not as many plot twist as the last book but definitely more action and still felt true to the characters.

Large drop off from 1st book in the series

What could David Mack have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Write an engaging story vs just move along a plot line. It truly seemed like he was trying to get from point A to point B in this book and that's what he did . It was journey without any great moments along the way.

Which character – as performed by Robert Petkoff – was your favorite?

Dr McCoy was perfect, his narration is all that saved this one for me

Do you think Best Defense needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Great question. When I started this book I had every intention of getting the third to finish the series. By then end of this book I was done and had no interest in wasting a credit to get the third book. I debated the purchase then told myself that I really did not care what happened as I had to work too hard to get to the end of this one. Too bad as I am a big Star Trek fan.

enjoyed but

I enjoyed the book although it was not as good as the first book. That is ok with me as I have to see how it ends. I enjoyed all the characters except for one Lt Uhura. She may not have alot of lines, but I grimaced each time she spoke. The narrator was usually spot on the various accents, but he did not do that voice well. perhaps the next time get a more appropriate voice, I would practice and do it for free. She was a hero at that time in history to young girls like me. she was a minor within the core group, but please don't disregard her voice.

The Best Defense

I really enjoyed this book . Can't wait to start book 3 of the series. I was not bored one minute. Robert Petkoff brings it to life with his rendition of the Enterprise crew, in particular Scotty and Checkov as well as the attitudes of the Romulans and Klingons.

The suspense continues and the plot thickens

Terrific voicing by the narrator. Often unsung, the narrator can make or break a book. Plot not only picks up the old threads but creates new ones and leaves you wanting book #3, so well done, author. I love this trilogy, so far and cannot wait to start #3.

A very well written story line

A very well written story line , composed of several sub stories brought together into a cohesive, captivating core story. It is a definate " I cant put this down" work.

A story worthy of Trek

Two books in and this story is worthy of Gene Rodenberry's title. I'd say it could make a film Trilogy of a story. Action, politics and exploration abound. Cannot wait until the conclusion in book 3 next week.

Heating up

Best Defense flows perfectly from Captain to Captain and feels like it could have been written by the same person, the characterisations, the pacing and the level of detail. Of course Mack and Cox are both trek heavyweights, but I can usually pick the differences. The story builds in complexity and by the end it's positively geared up for a wild finale.

The central concept, the key, the tech and the new alien races are all fresh ideas but what happens in this book is largely between well known alpha quadrant associates and plays out exactly how you'd expect it to. That's not a bad thing, everyone we know is recognisable, but it feels mighty predictable at times.

The story throws in a red herring, but not for us, it's for the Federation. We know exactly what's going on while we watch the team try to figure it out.

Now my conclusion so far is mixed. I've enjoyed all of the events in the story, but I'm most excited about the new universe stuff. We're definitely in for a big finale but it's a little disappointing to me that we're bringing old friends (or rather they invited themselves)... it's not padding, it's not useless filler, but it's a bit of a distraction.

Now let's go get Purgatory's Key.
