Story
A world on the precipice of the apocalypse. A secret forged in the flames of war. A chance to start over. For John Sutton, only one of those three things matters. Retired from a decade of brutal war, he wants nothing more than a quiet pastoral life while he does his best to stem the steady increase of his Doom Points before they hit 100, signaling the start of the end. He’s been given a small farm on the outskirts of the empire as thanks for his service, but no matter how far he travels, it's impossible to escape the war's devastating effects on the world.

A man. His ex-girlfriend's cat. A sadistic game show unlike anything in the universe: a dungeon crawl where survival depends on killing your prey in the most entertaining way possible. In a flash, every human-erected construction on Earth - from Buckingham Palace to the tiniest of sheds - collapses in a heap, sinking into the ground. The buildings and all the people inside have all been atomized and transformed into the dungeon: an 18-level labyrinth filled with traps, monsters, and loot.

For more than 150 years I've served the Kingdom of Sena. Through four kings and a queen. Two wars and a rebellion. I've founded and taught at a magic school. I've fought against beast waves and dungeon breaks. But now? Now, the one close friend I had left has passed. So, I'm done with their politics and their economics. The short and busy lives of humans are more burden than benefit on the weary soul of this half-elf.

An inn is a place to rest, a place to talk and share stories, a place to find adventure, or a starting ground for quests and legends. It is in this world, at least. To Erin Solstice, an inn seems like a medieval relic from the past. But here she is, running from Goblins and trying to survive in a world full of monsters and magic. She’d be more excited about all of this if everything wasn’t trying to kill her. But an inn is what she’s found, and so that’s what she becomes; an innkeeper, who serves drinks to heroes and monsters. Mostly monsters. But it’s a living, right?

Sensational Slice of Life Story
- By TrustedReviewerFTW on 06-16-22
By: Mike Caliban, and others
Publisher's Summary
A laugh-out-loud, slice-of-life martial-arts fantasy about...farming????
Jin Rou wanted to be a cultivator. A man powerful enough to defy the heavens. A master of martial arts. A lord of spiritual power. Unfortunately for him, he died, and now I’m stuck in his body.
Arrogant Masters? Heavenly Tribulations? All that violence and bloodshed? Yeah, no thanks. I’m getting out of here.
Farm life sounds pretty great. Tilling a field by hand is fun when you’ve got the strength of ten men—though maybe I shouldn’t have fed those Spirit Herbs to my pet rooster. I’m not used to seeing a chicken move with such grace...but Qi makes everything kind of wonky, so it’s probably fine.
Instead of a lifetime of battle, my biggest concerns are building a house, the size of my harvest, and the way the girl from the nearby village glares at me when I tease her.
A slow, simple, fulfilling life in a place where nothing exciting or out of the ordinary ever happens...right?
The first volume of the blockbuster progression-fantasy series—with more than 16 million views on Royal Road—now available on Kindle, Kindle Unlimited, and Audible!

An uplifting Slice of life Xianxia Story
This title has been one of the highest rated stories on Royal Road for a reason. Here are but a number of the reasons to listen. A delightful twist on the Xianxia tropes. A relatable and refreshing mc who just wants a tranquil life. A large supporting cast that manages to stick to your heart in their own right. Masterful pacing that moves the story without being rushed or bogged down. Enough mystery to keep you wondering what's coming next. All these and more are the myriad reasons to enjoy Beware of Chicken.
Can't forget Travis Baldree's usual fantastic performance either.

A Subversion of the Genre
Beware of Chicken is an initially comedic piece, that over time builds itself slowly but surely. with memorable characters, an ever expanding world, and a great example of an unreliable narrator in the form of Jin.
Jin sees the world through that of a normal man and his impact on others with his atypical attitude is seen prominently. As Jin learns of new things about the world so do you with his perspective marrying the strange with the normal.

Best Xianxia Novel in Years!
This slice of life novel is set in a rich and compelling world filled with hidden masters, powerful spirit beasts, growing rice, and building snowmen.
The characters are charming and each one is well developed and nuanced, not just 2D characterizations.
I’m not usually into slice of life stuff but this one has surprising depth and charm. Definitely recommend giving it a chance!

Great xianxia cultivation novel with a unique take on the genre. The MC recognizes the world he's been reborn into and decides he wants nothing to do with the cultivator BS so he goes off to be a farmer. Light & heart warming story. I HIGHLY recommend and can't wait for more.

Refreshing fantasy, Refreshing Xianxia
As always Travis Baldree does an excellent job with this one, and I'm glad that he decided to narrate this book. I had the pleasure of reading this story on Royal Road, and I'm enjoying the more polished final version. There were a few re-writes that added more context and details to help flesh out the story more, which I appreciated. Much like our main character Jin, the author has treated this story with careful diligence that is rare in this genre.
I fully recommend that you read this and the author's other work.

Best Xianxia I’ve ever read
This “tongue in cheek” take on the traditional Xianxia formula is amazing. Sure, epics such as “Painting The Mists” and “Unsouled” are great, but this book is like a breath of fresh air; managing to poke fun at the standard tropes while still respecting the category.
The characters are top notch. They have tonnes of personality and bring so much to the story and the world. Even better, many of them have hidden depths and go through their own personal arcs.
This book isn’t progression fantasy, in fact there is very little attention paid levels and growth at all, and yet it doesn’t feel “wishy-washy”. You get this feeling that there is a solid magic system in play and that the rules just aren’t fully understood yet.
My only regret is that I found this book before any of the sequels have been written/recorded.
Lastly, Travis Baldree brings his A-game; once again proving his status as one of the best narrators around.
I eagerly anticipate the next instalment!

As it should be 👏
Loved it. This is where wuxia & xianxia stories usually go down the same route ie. transported to another world, has some kind of cheat ability that let's him fight stronger enemy's and becomes the most powerful in a short time ect. Now here we have a guy who understands his situation in a Cultivation world and wants nothing to do with it 🤣🤣🤣 by far the best Cultivation story I've ever come across, with a protagonist who is intelligent and understands the world he's in isn't for him 😏

Comfortable the book
You know that feeling when you read a book and you have the feeling something is going to go wrong but in the end everything turns out alright, that is basically this book
It's not overly complex with its plot or characters, but exceeded at the very basic foundations of writing and character development where alot of more grandiose books falter. In essence, I had a lot of fun and found myself smiling a lot while listening to it.
Also you can't go wrong with a Travis baldree narrated book!

A Hilarious and Wonderful adventure
CasualFarmer shows off one of the most well-written and entertaining affectionate parodies of classical Xianxia or Wuxia novels, complete with a wicked sense of humour that has caused much muffled laughter in checkout queues. With a very likeable and enjoyable cast of characters and a plot that is equal parts slice of life, comedy/humour and action/adventure and a premise that takes a well-worn concept and does it true justice, Beware of Chicken manages to keep you wanting more. whilst the short-form web novel structure shows, it doesn't detract from how incredibly enjoyable and fun the novel is; a notion only enhanced by Tsuu's art.
Travis Baldree's narration is fun and engaging to listen to, and he handles the many Mandarin names in the story with aplomb, even managing the transliterated english-to-chinese ones admirably too. Whilst some characters do sound much older or different than I had imagined them with his narration, overall for someone who found the story online; the experience at his hands is very much worth retreading Volume 1
In the end, I cannot recommend Beware of Chicken highly enough, and re-reading the story has only affirmed that notion for me.

Unexpectedly warm
This took me by surprise. I expected it to be good but it was more than just good, it was sweet and wholesome and just so cute!
It was easy to read, the chapters were nice and bite sized, it was always engaging and the characters are all fun and loveable in their own ways.

Good light-hearted story
Good fun, casual but interesting take on another world setting.
Liked the humor and relationships between all the people and animals. Narrator did a good job bring it all to life.
