Story
For dinosaurs, it was a big rock. For humans: Coronal Mass Ejection (CME). When the Earth is hit by the greatest CME in recorded history (several times larger than the Carrington Event of 1859), the combined societies of the planet's most developed nations struggle to adapt to a life thrust back into the Dark Ages. In the United States, the military scrambles to speed the nation's recovery on multiple fronts including putting down riots, establishing relief camps, delivering medical aid, and bringing communication and travel back on line. Just as a real foothold is established in retaking the skies (utilizing existing commercial aircraft supplemented by military resources and ground control systems), a mysterious virus takes hold of the population, spreading globally over the very flight routes that the survivors fought so hard to rebuild.

Publisher's Summary
The first book of Day by Day Armageddon took us deep into the mind of a military officer and survivor as he made a New Year's resolution to start keeping a journal. The man kept his resolution and brought to us the fall of humanity, day by day. We see the man transition from the life that you and I live to the prospect of fighting for his very survival against the overwhelming hordes of the dead. We see him bleed, we see him make mistakes, we witness him evolve. The highly anticipated sequel to the best-selling underground cult classic, Day by Day Armageddon, begins where the first novel left off.
BEGIN INTERCEPT
Armies of undead have risen up across the U.S. and around the globe; there is no safe haven from the diseased corpses hungering for human flesh. But in the heat of a Texas wasteland, a small band of survivors attempt to counter the millions closing in around them.
INTERCEPT COMPLETED
Day by day, the handwritten journal entries of one man caught in a worldwide cataclysm capture the desperation--and the will to survive--as he joins forces with a handful of refugees to battle soulless enemies both human and inhuman from inside an abandoned strategic missile facility. But in the world of the undead, is mere survival enough?

Make sure you start with Book 1 "Day by Day Armagedon" then sit back and enjoy Beyond Exile. I love J.L. Bourne's writing style and the Narrator Jay Snyder, has the perfect voice for this part. I enjoy a good Zombie story and or movie, some more then others, and this is rated right up there with my #1 picks. Please keep the stories coming Mr. Bourne !!

Decent follow up to Day By Day
I greatly enjoyed Day By Day Armageddon. As a fan of the Zombie sub-genre, I have been sated by both of the first two stories in this series. Beyond Exile in my opinion, did not live up to the initial story arc in the first book.
Essentially this is a survival story. The protagonist is out on a scouting mission in a helicopter and it crash lands hundreds of miles from his base. He then has to traverse this distance through millions of zombies and radiated zones. You know he is going to make it because there is another book after this. So basically this story relies on the tension accrued on the journey.
I felt like he got too lucky. He's saved via some mysterious organization too many times. I also felt that the story was too linear. I wanted to see things shaken up a bit. I kept thinking of the greatness of the 3rd book in the Mountain Man series. That one took the protagonist from one independent episode to another, wracking up the tension in unexpected ways. Beyond Exile just did not reach those heights.
I also felt that the diary point of view restrained Bourne. This story might have been better suited with a 1st person real time style. Yeah the diary is a nice gimmick. But you can sense the author is trying everything he can to distance himself from it.

He's done it again!!!
Another excellent installment in the ongoing Zombie Armageddon. Often times the sequel to any book (or movie) isn't able to hold up to the expectations of the original. Beyond Exile is certainly one of the few exceptions, with J.L. taking us on a new and equally intense journey.
If you are into the Zombie/Post Apocalyptic experience and/or you enjoyed Day by Day Armageddon, Beyond Exile is a must read.

Very Much Surprised
This book is very well written, he draws you into the story very well. I had my reservation but not any more. I have listened to both books and enjoyed them very much. The first book well like everyone says ends very abruptly , but the second pick's up right where one left off. This is a must read/listen for anyone interested in the zombie genre. I would highly recommend this to anyone and I truly can't wait until the 3rd one come out.

Fun new story direction
So this book is the sequel to "Day by Day Armageddon". The story explained in the format of the main character reading back his diary. The book picks up the day after the events at the end of the previous book. The book takes quit a few twist and turns, introduces new friends, new groups with unknown allegiances, and deeper explanation of what is going on with the undead. Although for every question that this book answered, it brought up two more. The one thing this book has that I thought was missing from the story is a "long trek to safety while scanvanging for items'. This is also the first time that our protagonist is actually all alone for a time. That one section was truly masterful. I generally enjoy these books for fun, and that one section is the only place that actually gave me a chill. If you like book one, there is no reason I can think of that you wouldn't like book 2. Jay Snyder is a great reader. He does the voices with ease, even when he has to use a accent. I think zombies + great story + great reader = a good time. I hope book 3 will be written and released on audible soon. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Good story - Can't wait for the next one
The story is as good or maybe better than the previous book. There is never a dull moment in this new macabre world of the undead. It also leaves the possibility for a third book. I can't wait. The narrator was also very good. If you liked the first book even a little, then this is a worthwhile listen.

We don't need Character Development.
Any additional comments?
Day by Day is simply the best Zombie book I have read. All the negative reviews that accuse this book of lack of character development and straying from the Novel Format are completely missing the point of this book. It’s a “Day by Day” account of one guys journey through surviving the Zombie outbreak. Unlike other novels that start out as a journal then morph the reader into the scene to over hear conversations and thoughts of the characters, this book stays in true Journal format – so there are no conversations between characters we get to experience… there are no side plots… there are no other points of view - from the first page to the last page, this is a documentation of survival.
As if the reader were to find this “Journal” in an old desk, we get a glimpse – a snap shot of this guys life. What he sees, what he thinks, who he meets, how he reacts… I was not so sure a book like this would keep me invested – but honestly, I have never had a book grab hold of me so hard and so fast – literally by the 3rd page I was hooked. In spite of the limitations the author gave himself in picking this writing style, he still manages to make us care about our hero - and care about the things he cares about (other characters). We feel his fear right along with him. We feel his frustration, his denial, and his determination. All this – without any character development at all. (Now that’s a great writer in my book!).
I highly recommend this book! And take my suggestion, if you do purchase this book, have your Google Maps ready – you will find yourself wanting to follow along with the character. :)
The narrator is excellent! He does a good job at sounding like he’s talking to himself… fits in very well the feel of the book.

Not Too Shabby
Occasionally a bit clumsy as the author tries to crowbar the 'story told through diary entries' mechanic into some fairly unlikely places, the story takes a bit of time to find it's feet and get going but when it does it's a solid and entertaining read.
But it's definitely worth a read because book 2 is very, very good indeed.

Beyond Exile
Well I loved the first book, and could not wait for this one to come on-line. It started o.k, although I felt it was more of the same from book 1. How wrong I was ! The story takes you down different avenues and leaves you wanting more. One point I think you should know, this is a follow up from book 1 and if you have not read that one first you may not fully get what's going on or who's who. This book talks about alot of what went on in the first. Enjoy, it's Great.

Good but not as good as the first
I am a great fan of the first book in this series, it literally picks up the moment the first book ends and continues in a similar vein. After the first quarter or so of the story it moves of in different directions, our band of survivors from the first book become somewhat secondary to another developing storyline, for me this was a problem as I wasn't really interested enough in the new paths the story takes and (as John states in his review) once the "shark has been jumped" our hero is no longer the lone survivalist but apart of a bigger story line....there is a big section about 2/3rds of the way through where we get right back back to basics tho' which was enjoyable....you will know what I mean when you get to it!
Reviews are very personal and subjective but this did not reach the heights of the first book, I had really got involved in the characters and their stories and could not wait to see what happened next for them all but this second book did not fully satisfy my expectations. That said I still enjoyed it, just not as much!
The story ends with a terrific senario for a third installment....I can't wait for it to be written and narrated.

Jumping the shark...
The first half of this story is very good, the second, well, not so much.
The first half is a very detailed and "realistic" account of survival in an undead world. Gritty, in-depth and with few of the "why the hell did you do that?" moments which seem to afflict this kind of fiction.
There are two fundamental problems within the second half as far as I'm concerned.
Firstly, it jumps the shark. For those not sure what this means it refers to an episode of Happy Days in which the Fonz literally jumps a shark on a surf board. The phrase has now become synonymous with the idea of going past the point of no return as far as realism is concerned. As soon as this jump occurs 2/3rds of the way through a lot of the tension is lost because you know there's no real danger anymore.
Secondly, this jump opens up an entirely separate, potentially crucial story thread which is just ignored. It may be addressed in the planned sequel but the lack of focus on it seemed strange within this novel.
Worth reading but a bit of a let down.

I finished it!
Yea! It all gets a bit samey man. This gun, that gun, fancy weapons and a load of American military gobbledygook. If you're into that kind of thing great but there's no depth, nothing clever here just beans on toast zombi fodder.

Ok at the start but lost me half way through.
I was hoping this would be an enjoyable follow on from the first book. It was certainly enjoyable at the start but had me daydreaming halfway through and then hoping to finish.

Gun nuts boys own adventure.
Entertaining enough, playing back all the zombie apocalypse tropes. All the characters are stereotypes, main character an omni capable Mary Jane, and more time is spent describing guns than long running female characters.
Performance is good and easy to follow.

Another great book from J.L Bourne. Really enjoy the narration from Jay Snyder also. I'm off to download the next installment.

This is my second journey into JL BOURNES apocalyptic world and it was even better than the first roll in book three and four
