Publisher's Summary

Billy Summers is Stephen King's gripping and compelling novel about a contract killer, an ex-marine, with one last payday to earn before he retires.... Once again, King sets his storytelling talent on a new path with this epic new thriller.

From legendary storyteller and number one best-selling author Stephen King, whose ‘restless imagination is a power that cannot be contained’ (The New York Times Book Review), comes a thrilling new novel about a good guy in a bad job.

Billy Summers is a man in a room with a gun. He’s a killer for hire and the best in the business. But he’ll do the job only if the target is a truly bad guy. And now Billy wants out. But first there is one last hit. Billy is among the best snipers in the world, a decorated Iraq war vet, a Houdini when it comes to vanishing after the job is done. So what could possibly go wrong?

How about everything.

This spectacular can’t-put-it-down novel is part war story, part love letter to small-town America and the people who live there, and it features one of the most compelling and surprising duos in King fiction, who set out to avenge the crimes of an extraordinarily evil man. It’s about love, luck, fate, and a complex hero with one last shot at redemption.

You won’t put this story down, and you won’t forget Billy.

Exceptional. In terms of story and narration.

There has been some disappointment concerning Mr. Stephen King’s recent books being so far removed from his earlier work. This and the mentions of a certain president sure do tile up people. I’d prefer to say his books were always about people. Sometimes people in scary situations. But always about people. My humble opinion, this was a gripping read. Like a turn of a screw, it gets tighter and tighter. The protagonist seems poorly fleshed out even with the insight into his thoughts. However his thoughts about the other characters is phenomenal. The voice work really complimented the story. Just couldn’t stop listening till the story ended. And was left with the feeling the story ended too soon.

Wouldn’t change a thing.

I’m a fan from way back but this is going on the list as one of my favourite SK books. It has everything I love about his work, fully rounded characters who you cannot help but feel something for, complex stories within stories that often span years and a plot with little to no holes. The narration too is flawless. I loved it.

Great characters

Loved the story between the 2 main characters. Glad it was only a friendship and nothing too sexual.
Different ending to what I thought it would be.
Narrator drove me crazy at times, his voice was strong then went down to inaudible. I mean really low. I’m not sure what he was thinking and hope he listened to himself. I listened in the car so missed a few good words and ends of sentences.
Overall a good listen from one of my fave authors.

Stunning

This is quite possibly the best audio book. I've listened to. The narrator deserves a special mention for an outstanding performance. The story is gripping, moving and almost impossible to put down.

Thoroughly enjoyed

Really enjoyed this crime novel by SK. The style and story kept my fractured attention throughout. The atmosphere reminded me somewhat of TV shows like Dexter and Ozark. The narration was excellent and reminded me of the young Clint Eastwood. Rare, absorbing high quality fiction. Many thanks, Mr King.

Great ending!

I’m a big SK fan, I wasn’t sure about this book as the subject matter was a bit different to the normal suspense / horror. I ended up reallllly enjoying it, especially the ending! Which feels nice to say because we all know how Mr King usually makes us feel about endings :P

Steve - you nailed it!

I have read and listened to most of Stephen King’s titles. Billy Summers is absolutely mesmerising. It quickly draws you in until you’re unable to leave this brilliantly crafted world. If you enjoy Mr. King’s work, you’ll love this. If you’re unfamiliar with Stephen King, you’ll be hooked from the first paragraph. The narration by Paul Sparks is truly exceptional and a real tour de force - congratulations Paul, what a mighty performance!
Billy Summers - a masterclass Steve. All I can say is thank you
Billy Summers - if you have your sights on a download, aim for this title

Unbelievably sexist, disappointing form

Gratuitous graphic description of a raped teenagers body. Repeated persistent chauvinism. This long time King fan is very disappointed. Ruined an otherwise decent yarn.

There is so much wrong with this novel.

King’s craft is apparent but it is as tired and Flat as his characters. And the misogyny…! This is pretty grotesque – an old man’s wet dream. Just no.

Disappointing

Not the usual SK type of book, a thriller not a horror type. I found 70% of it quite boring. The narrator didn't help either he spoke too fast and in several places his voice dropped and you could hardly hear what he was saying. All in all I would say SK stick to what you are best at

Brilliant

Loved this book from start to finish, real characters, zero supernatural, just perfect. Hoped to enjoy it for some time, usually listening on long walks with the dogs but couldn’t stop, so finished in 2 days. Addictive

Slow burner...

And it's OK. But the freaking narrator just puts me to sleep in 15-30 minutes. Flat, boring, annoying voice.

Ok, I do like SK however, I couldnt get to the end

Got 3/4 way through solid characters however, the responses of the characters to each other and their surroundings at times seemed counter intuitive. The dialogue between characters in certain circumstances was not believable

Always in awe…

…of Stephen King’s ability to create new and incredible characters and stories which keep fans like me coming back decade after decade. Reminiscent of the focused and intricate character building seen in 11/22/63, Billy Summers is a vivid depiction of lives and experiences both real and unreal to the reader. I loved this book and the narration was perfectly suited to the character and the style. Fantastic - just fantastic.

Started out well but ended up a train wreck

I was really into this story, and loved spending time with Billy, the main character. I was totally engaged in the story. But I felt the climax happened in the middle and the last half of the book was a waste of time

Brilliant as per usual

It is a little more crime thiller than supernatural thriller but a really good yarn. Characters that could maybe show up again in another novel...I hope so.
