Publisher's Summary

A rogue Russian nuke sails toward the harbors of Los Angeles in the hull of a ramshackle sailboat. Without destroying a single building, the bomb shatters the latticework of the American dream, toppling one piece of the economy after another. A group of Special Forces veterans and their prepper friends scramble for survival in a worldwide catastrophe so psychologically disruptive they are left questioning everything they ever believed to be true.

Can't get through it

I'm a huge fan of this survival genre, and I guess I've been spoiled from previous audiobooks I've listened to. But the reading of this book is, for me, very sub par. It's the way I would read a book, thus the reason why I like audio books, because they don't read like I do. I never thought the narrator would play such a huge role for me, but now realize I have to pay attention to who narrates.

The characters kept me listening.

The first thing that occurred to me was that Ross and Kirkham know the technical side of of their story extremely well, and if you're a Clancy fan, that will speak to you. I tend to read for characters as well as information, and I think that that is where the authors found their sweet spot. It's dangerous to base a character off of oneself, as both do here, because of our tendency to want to embellish our best parts and gloss over our faults. Ross and Kirkham are not afraid to face their characters' weak spots. They have created a book full of believable, likable (and sometimes unlikable) humans, battling chaos, in a very realistic post-collapse America. I am again reminded of the line by fictional chaos theorist Ian Malcolm: "The kind of control you are attempting simply is... it's simply not possible." Maybe not, but its fascinating to watch it all unfold.

The voice performance is good, but I gave the performance only 4 out of 5 stars because, aesthetically, I prefer a different performance style.

I strongly recommend the book.

Good concept... needs some refinement

Enjoyed the book (audio), very good concept, but could have used more editing. Sorry, but the narrator was absolutely painful, awkward to the point of distraction. I will likely try the next in the series because I like the concept and respect those involved. But please find a new reader.... it really is a talent we all don’t have. Now I’m off to have some Black Rifle Coffee.

Excellent first book eye opening

This book is quite an eye opening view into the reality of the real world. Prepare yourself for the introspection because it hits like a Mack truck. Fantastic storyline, very up to date concerns, narrator was good just not great.

The Narrator was a Black Swan.

The story was great, the characters were real, and the situation was epic. The narrator was a mix of William Shatner, pee wee herman, and the most annoying guy you work with. He wasnt the worst narrator, that honor goes to whoever narrated the Deckard novels by that guy from SOFREP. At least this guy got Kalishnikov right. And Im not even docking him for mispronouncing Tooele or Nephi, shit they even have a song about weird names for Utah towns. This is the best Post Apocolyptic story I have listened to, and dispite the narration I am going to listen again.

Very good and realistic story, not a great reading

The story was amazing; however, the cutting back and forth between readers and the occasional totally different person adding words where it was obviously flubbed sometimes pulled me out of the story. If you want help with the next one, shoot Dakota at Great Wolf a message. J. Markel knows how to get ahold of him.

The Narration

This is the worst narration I’ve ever heard, it sounded like fumbling teen reading in class. I can’t say much about the storyline as it could have been a classic but you’d never know

REALLY FACINATING. Super addictive.👌💯💥

I was listening to it as the events of the covid-19 pandemic unfolded and was really interesting to see some elements of the book become reality to a certain degree. I love that you question what you would do as the story unfolds or recognise character types from life and their strengths or shortcomings (lots of different story lines pull together as the story unfolds) and can also see where you picked a problem before the characters or at least was aware of something OR were totally ignorant in other ways and really saw how things unfolded and made you think "WOW!" never thought of that!!!! I also loved all the descriptions of what they are doing and why, from different characters perspectives, both ignorant and informed. I hope there are many more books like this!!!!! I will listen to this a second time at some point in the future too.

Realistic survival of a Black Swan Apocalypse.

No clear right or wrong. Shades of grey.... Ambiguous morality of action and unpredictable consequences from each act.
