Publisher's Summary

The black rain is coming. After a millennium of slumber, the old gods have awakened.

Lucas Wheelhouse, intrepid archeologist, is hurled into a world completely unlike his own. Monsters roam the streets, and divine powers fall into mortal hands. Lucas will have to seize this power if he hopes to ascend to the celestial throne. From steamy jungles to barren deserts, he'll traverse the length and breadth of a dimension beyond our understanding.

Building his family alongside his skills, he might just have a chance at overcoming the mad gods' game. But if he fails, the black rain will come, washing away humanity and extinguishing all hope.

Fun story: lots of humor and terrific narration

Black Rain by Roland Carlsson, narrated by Erin Bateman, is 5* of hilarious fun with terrific narration!

I swear (often), Erin Bateman gets more entertaining to listen to with every book she narrates. While there are plenty of monsters to battle on their mission to save the earth, this is a very lighthearted book with lots and lots of humor. Just a few examples: a “mischief monkey” steals Lucy the now-foxgirl’s top; Lucy offers 1 gold coin and 3 dirty dishrags for a battle ax; and, perhaps my favorite, the MC describes his expertise with a weapon, noting that unfortunately, a poorly communicated cross country event put an end to his IM javelin throwing team at college. Oh, and….no, you’ll need to read/listen to the book for more!

The plot is pretty straightforward: 40ish professor and his hot 23yo redheaded grad student are transported to a realm where they must ascend nine levels to prevent the earth from being destroyed by “black rain”. She likes his transformed rippling muscles, and he likes her new fluffy foxgirl tail. Along the way, they meet lots of interesting characters, some of whom are happy to join our MCs with some fun relaxation techniques.

The book ends as they complete level 3, so I assume this is the first of three books for Black Rain. I look forward to the sequels!

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. Receiving a review copy did not influence my rating or my review.

Dull

Ok story but told badly. Felt boring and just moves in a straight path from start to finish. And I know ppl like Erin but let’s be honest she needs dual narrative, her male voices are just horrible you can hardly tell who is talking.

Weirdly addictive

A greath smooth listen as expected from Erin Bateman. Roland carlson is a new author who has been creating great new content. I especially love the snarky systyem messages that contrast greatly with the scenes.

Check out this new book from Roland Carlsson

Alright so we've got French mice, evil rat kins, and a flying pig. Are you hooked yet? OK, if not yet, then our MC is a professor out in the field with his smoking graduate student who has a crush on him when they are transported to a game world. When I say, game world I mean a game world, where our characters are in idealized version of themselves surrounded by NPC's. Who runs the game you may ask? Well of course the answer is the gods! And what is at stake you may ask? And of course, the answer is humanities very existence! If that sounds like your jam, then this is your book. It's over the top, it's fun, and I recommend this audiobook to anybody reading this review. It's another fantastic performance by the narrator and a fantastic story by the author. Thank you to everybody who had a hand in bringing this book to us, the listeners. Keep up the good work and I can't wait for book two.

enthralling

an interesting take on a portal Isekai. the transformation the MC's go through in both physical and emotional states make the story easy to follow. the different plot scenarios the MC's are forced to endure insures the entire journey you are following along will bring hours of entertainment to your day.

Really really boring and generic

Wasnt terrible. But I've already forgotten the plot. Nothing really stood out for me in this, from characters, combat to litrpg mechanics, I just couldn't bring myself to care about anything because this felt less than a story and more like a general summary of all such story's like this one.
Even the npcs where more npc like and weird because if the game like setting, while there was no real fun from the combat because the MC had no real choices to make.
