Publisher's Summary

The manhunt has officially begun.

Now the target of a game-wide Holy War, Ned is forced to flee the Onyx Sands.

The odds are stacked against him; Tyrann has tens of thousands of followers, a religion that’s spreading like wildfire, and a powerful god that will be stepping into the world of EBO in a matter of days.

Meanwhile, Ned’s allies are a squirrel-exploding bard, a repurposed home security system who takes her instructions far too literally, and a wildly unreliable talking axe named Frank.

But even as the inevitable conflict draws closer, change is coming to EBO. An old power is stirring, bringing with it strange new enemies, fearsome challenges, and rewards that every player will be vying to obtain.

There will be blood.

Not enough for Frank, but a very substantial amount.

Hey Look, Frank's Back

I'm always worried with sequels that things are going to drag on, but Black Sand Baron is even better than Shadeslinger. The action is ramped up big time, but without so many obligatory stat sheets as you might encounter in other LitRPG series. Things are well paced, and even the sometimes lengthy dialogues between Frank, Ned, and other assorted pals are unexpectedly funny. Black Sand Baron took many surprising turns, keeping the story fresh and moving along. I can't recommend this series enough. If you have even a passing interest in video games or tabletop board games, this is a great place (or rather the first book Shadeslinger) to start into the LitRPG genre. BUY IT.

An excellent follow up

Another knock out proformance from Travis.

Shadeslinger was probably the best debut novel I've ever expirence and one of the best example of litrpg I've read and Black Sand Baron is a near perfect follow up to it. Hilarious and surprisingly heart warming at times, with some heart pounding action. I can't wait to get my hands on the next book.

Amazing Sequel

Anyone who read the first book should be super excited to see that book two is available. I am no exception. Kyle Kirrin is an amazing author who tells amazing stories, not just a hack looking to cash in on the large number of people who are hungry for this genre. You will laugh, cry, cringe, and yearn along with his characters for sure. I don’t think I have ever read a book with so many fist pumps and genuine belly laughs. His world is believable, the world-building is amazing, and Frank is... Well, he's Frank, and Frank is awesome.

One of the best LITrpg

The sequel keeps lives up to the high standards of Shadeslinger. The Ripple System looks like a shining example of LITrpg that tell stories beyond the wish fulfillment standard in the genre.

Frank said. I said. Darling said.

I think the ideas are good and the authors got talent but man, hearing 'frank said' or 'i said' after just about every sentence in a conversation is brutal. It's probably fine in text form but when you hear it narrated (and by Travis Baldree who does a good job of conveying emotions and tone) it comes off as really grating to me. A few 'exclaimed', 'sighed', 'replied', 'vented', 'drawled', 'raged', or anything else would do wonders to spice up the writing. Frank's dialogue is a little cringe sometimes too but that's part of his character and I can ignore that. There is an in world excuse for him being annoying, after all. House comes off as annoying more than endearing to me, personally, but I don't remember it bothering me in the first. You might find it cute but I've just seen it done in ways I prefer. (Think Data from TNG)

Would definitely benefit from a heavier 'show don't tell' approach to writing as well.

These are all opinions, don't shoot me for not connecting with this book. I'll give this another go in a few days.

Must Read

I throughly enjoyed book 1 in the series. This book surpassed it in every field. Author really honed in on what the audience loved in the first and doubled down on those parts. I will spend the next year or so eagerly awaiting the next book int the series.

Book 2 is even better!

Truly enjoyed the evolution of the characters. The story line isn’t cluttered with stats. The story is fast pace and little to no downtime and action less dialog.

Brilliant book and experience

I loved this book, I really enjoyed book one and this was even better

A really well made world, engaging characters and fantastic interaction between Ned and Frank, some very funny lines.

The story has some nice twists and a good pace. One of the best litrpg books I have listened to I can't wait for book 3. I appreciate the audiobook being released so quickly.

The narrator did an exceptional job he really brings the characters to life and gives them extra depth.

I enjoyed this book from start to finish.

Fantastic sequel

The bar was set really high after reading the previous book. BUT, Kyle has managed to take something great and make it even better!!

This book has a great plot, humor and amazing characters.

There are endless amazing things about this series but my favourite thing about it is the interactions between the MC and his companions, particularly with Frank. They are a great pair and offer endless amounts of humor.

p.s. you will lose sleep if you get this book so be prepared!

God I love Frank!

After listening to both box I have to say that this series is brilliant and I hope it goes on for a while.
Frank may just be my favourite character, although is back and forth with Ned is pretty hilarious.
There have been so many times where I just burst out laughing and I have genuinely enjoyed this book!

Eagerly waiting for the next book and to see how Tiran will retaliate

Series escalating well

This instalment of the series works on all levels, delivering strong character growth, story escalation, producing a compelling main storyline for the listener and continuing to deliver highly entertaining dialogue that brings the characters to life so well.

Nothing much to say about the narration, it is another really good story-enhancing performance.

Overall, the only real downside to this book is that the next one isn't due until 2022.

Great world building, unbeatable protagonist

I had my criticisms of the first book but I came back to the second book in the series because I really really like the world he’s building, the mechanics, the flavor, I like what he’s adding to the litrpg genre.
The main protagonist wears a lot of plot armor, but you want him to win so it doesn’t hurt the overall story.
Kyle is clearly a newer writer (don’t take that as an insult) but there have been notable improvements in his writing since the first book.
I’m upset that book 3 isn’t out yet. Get on it, because the ending has set up for some interesting changes and challenges.

First LitRPG

I've never really been into these, but I did enjoy this, I read the first one, listened to this. My only real issue is his permanent companion. I don't mind him in small doses, but when they get into a several page conversation, it quickly gets old, fast and I find myself stopping the book. He's so god damned annoying. I get that's the point, but there should be a limit.

If you don't like mascots; don't get it.

One of the best series yet.

The ripple system is easily in my top 5 book series while remaining completely unique. The game world blends with the setting and characters seamlessly so that it all falls into the background of both great characters and story. Looking forwards to book 3.
