Publisher's Summary

The 9-L model illustrated in Blended and Special explores the dynamics of stepfamilies caring for children with special needs and disabilities and presents the information in digestible nuggets ready for consumption by blended families juggling the demands of parenthood with caring for children with special needs. Having grown up in a blended family with a sibling with special needs and now being a stepparent with a child with special educational needs, the author has experienced the phenomenon from different angles. As an active member of the special needs and disabilities community, the author was also able to draw data from fellow parents of children with special needs to supplement the information. Whether you have an established stepfamily or are in the early stages of a blended family, you can find value in the information presented. Also included is a chapter of real-life case studies from stepparents caring for disabled children. The experiences they share hold valuable lessons on issues that may arise and how they handled them in their endeavor to maintain a happy stepfamily.

There are various reasons why the union of two parents and their children from former relationships can prove challenging. Blended families face unique challenges, and when a child with special needs is part of the family unit, the learning curve can be very steep. Unsuspecting partners might discover that they are out of their depth in the circumstances. If not understood before moving in, the stepparent may struggle to cope and throw the family off balance. The text provides valuable tips and techniques for raising stepchildren with special needs and disabilities. It is written solely from the perspective of a parent who has been on both sides of the equation and holds no medical or technical advice or information.

Valuable experience for caring member in family

I'll recommend it to my cousin. His daughter suffers from some kind of disease like Muscle atrophy and can hardly sit well. He tries so hard to raise her while taking multi-jobs. This audiobook is perfect for him learning from the author's experience. The author takes herself as an example to show us how we can show love to the members with special needs, and keeping company with them is also a key to maintaining beautiful balance in the family. An excellent book with great advice.

Super informative, motivational and empowering!

As a new stepdad, I picked up a few informational and self-help audiobooks to help me get in the rhythm of becoming the best stepdad and building a strong foundational family. I must say that this was by far the most helpful book for me. It really motivated me to shift certain mentalities and be able to bond with my stepson in ways I didn't think were possible. I'm so happy with my purchase and highly recommend this book for all stepparents looking to embolden their families, especially those with special needs! Easily 5 stars!

PHENOMENOL!

Being a teacher and Guidance Counsellor...and having also worked in the disabilities field, I can say this author knows what she is talking about. the fact is that sometimes people do not understand the work and the commitment that rearing a family calls for. This is further compounded when the family is a blended one, and still further when a member has some form of disability. This book is very timely and potent. I recommend it unreservedly!

Valuable Wisdom

An honest look at navigating the challenges of blended families. The author brilliantly shares personal insights from her own experience, an abundance of resources and encouraging quotes. I definitely learned valuable information that I did not know or even consider. For any parents currently in a blended family with a special needs child, or in the process of becoming a stepfamily, this book is a must read. Kudos to the author for taking on this important subject that many don’t discuss openly. The wisdom shared here, especially the “Nine L’s” is invaluable.

Very Powerful and Highly recommended!

This audiobook is about the challenges faced by the unconventional family setup which sometimes might include step children/parents and kids with special needs. The author Andrea Campbell shared her life experience from childhood and into the present day. A well researched and very resourceful audiobook. She went into great length in explaining the difference between learning disabilities and learning difficulties and how these are viewed differently across the globe. This was an eye opener for me in understanding family situations around the world. With the usual saying "Knowledge is Power", the audiobook "Blended and Special" is a very powerful tool that empowers you for such challenges. If you are in a blended family relationship or know anyone about to be or is already in it, this audiobook is a must listen to!

Great audiobook!

I love this book as it provides intellectual understanding with detailed guidance to build a smoother relationship between me and my step children. Very well explained and easy to follow. I really believe that this book can also be beneficial to heal the bond in any stepfamily with no special needs or disabilities.
Thank you Andrea and Bonnie!
