Story
In this sweeping, threaded narrative of the global phenomenon known as the Vampire Wars, mankind is unwittingly infected by a millennia-old bacteria unknowingly exhumed by a scientific expedition in Antarctica. Now, in some rare cases, a person’s so-called junk DNA becomes activated. Depending on their racial and ethnic heritage, they begin to manifest one of the many diverse forms of the "others" that are the true basis for the legends of supernatural creatures. These aren’t your usual vampires and werewolves - it goes much deeper than that.

A teenage girl awakens to find herself trapped in a coffin. She has no idea who she is, where she is, or how she got there. Fighting her way free brings little relief - she discovers only a room lined with caskets and a handful of equally mystified survivors. Beyond their room lies a corridor filled with bones and dust but no people and no answers. She knows only one thing about herself - her name, M. Savage, which was engraved on the foot of her coffin. She finds herself in charge. She is not the biggest among them or the boldest, but for some reason the others trust her.

Famine. Death. War. Pestilence. These are the harbingers of the biblical apocalypse, of the End of the World. In science fiction, the end is triggered by less figurative means: nuclear holocaust, biological warfare/pandemic, ecological disaster, or cosmological cataclysm. But before any catastrophe, there are people who see it coming. During, there are heroes who fight against it. And after, there are the survivors who persevere and try to rebuild. "The Apocalypse Triptych" will tell their stories.

Publisher's Summary
A collection of eight horror stories created by New York Times best-selling novelist Scott Sigler, author of horror/thrillers Infected, Contagious, Ancestor, Nocturnal and the young-adult Galactic Football League series.
Stories in Blood Is Red:"Number One with a Bullet" In the high-stakes world of the National Football League, a wasted draft choice can cost careers and damage a franchise for years to come. When they investigate sure-fire number-one pick Eugene Patterson, however, they find far more than they want to know.
"Red Man" (Parsec Award winner): To be marked as a sex offender, a pedophile, a child rapist, is to carry stigma that all but banishes you from society. And if that mark is literal - a permanent, inoperable face tattoo - anonymity vanishes, and all who see you know of your crime. For a man who is wrongly convicted of horrible deeds, this mark becomes his life.
"Wolf": In the time before man, one social animal ruled the Americas. The wolf. Wolf packs roamed the continent, hunting and killing and breeding. But before any wolf ever saw the death that would walk on two legs, there came another danger.…
"The Great Snipe Hunt": Nature abhors a vacuum. One such vacuum exists in the "urban ecologies" of our cities. From bacteria to insects, from rodents to hawks, from feral cats to the mass numbers of pigeons, plants and animals weave together a web of life that goes mostly unnoticed by humans. What is missing from this mosaic? Four college students set out to find this mythical creature, the "Snipe", and learn that a vacuum isn't the only thing nature abhors.
"Iowa Typhoon": Come on, come visit Fenders Pointe, IA. We'd love to have you stop by, see the trees, smell the flowers, and relax with our Midwestern hospitality. Only, you should try to schedule around the rainy season. If you're here when the typhoons hit, we'll be happy to welcome you as a permanent resident.
"Sacred Cow" There is a fine line between absent-minded genius and idiot savant. Gordo Gordon keeps a foot planted firmly on either side. Father Al knows this better than anyone. Father Al watches over Gordo and tolerates the young man's endless - and useless - inventions. When Gordo creates a theory to track "prayer energy", however, Father Al will find a religious secret that puts his faith to the test.
"Hunter Hunterson & Sons": Welcome to the family business. Hunter Hunterson and his kin live in Slayerville, KY, making their living chasing crack-smoking ogres, peeping-tom phantoms, bail-jumping zombie pimps, and the occasional rabid unicorn. When a methed-out vampire (and family friend) goes on a road-trip rampage, Hunter and his kin pack up the truck and follow the trail of corpses all the way to San Francisco.
This reality-TV style story feels like a combination of Dog the Bounty Hunter meets Ghostbusters meets The Beverly Hillbillies. Hunter's "war journal" is a mix of tawdry laughs and gut-churning horror.
Mt. Fitzroy (first chapter): In 2005, Sigler released Earthcore as the world's first podcast-only novel. His fans have been waiting since then for Mt. Fitzroy, the second book in the trilogy. Blood Is Red features the first chapter of this oft-promised and long-delayed sequel. Join Patrick O'Doyle and Bertha Lybrand as they head back down below to deliver a heapin' helpin' of revenge.

New favorite author
I found this on accident about a year ago when I was looking for horror short stories. Ever since then I have been in love with Siglers work, a Junky per se. I've read the whole Infected series, including Ancestors, and listened to all of The Crypt. He is officially my new favorite author, and it all started with this monster masterpiece of a short story collection. Highly recommended for anyone who is a fan of heavily science fact based horror "SciFi".

Read by the author
8 short scary stories. Unique & fun stories with an occasional spin. Snipe Hunt, Hunter Hunderson & Sons, Mt Fitzroy to name a few. I can't write much without ruining the stories. They all have a creepyness to them that will get you thinking & wanting more. After each story the author talks about the previous story. It's great to hear what possessed him to write the story and when/how it was published.

WHAT ARE YOU?
AGENT FUC##NG SCULLY
Of the eight stories I loved three of them. One of them was fairly good and the others not so much. If I can get two to three good stories out of a collection, I am happy. The ones I don't like I usually skip, once I know it is not going anywhere. SS mentions in his introduction, that these are basically practice stories and that is what several of them sound like. Some of them have a X-files feel to them.
Red Man: This was a great concept, but was not really a story, was more of an introduction to a main character of some future series. If he writes the series, I will listen.
THE GREAT SNIPE HUNT: This was my favorite. It is a theme I have always had an interest in. Nature has a tendency to produce wildlife everywhere, including cities. I live in a town of over 166,000 people and I have seen coyotes, foxes, raccoons, opossums, buzzards and others in town.
SACRED COW: Another good concept involving the power of prayer.
HUNTER HUNTERSON & SONS: This is a fun story involving rednecks, paranormal monsters and San Francisco. He has episodes on his website for free. I hope he makes some of these available at Audible. This was funny and weird, my favorite combo.
INTRODUCTIONS
As, I have mentioned in other collections, I appreciate finding out why certain stories where written and what the author went through to get it published.
Scott Sigler
Scott reads all of his stories and he does a good job. There was one story in which I thought a professional would have been better, but SS often reads is own stuff and he is good.

A must for Sigler Junkies!
Great collection of 8 Sigler short stories including a preview of the VERY LONG awaited Mount Fitz Roy! lol Mr Sigler, thanks for the tease, now get us the whole book! These stories are great and a must for any Sigler junkie! Not many authors can pull off doing their own narration, but Scott Sigler is an exception. Listening to him narrated is like comfort food for my ears. He was one of the first authors I enjoyed when I started audiobooks and is still one of my absolute favorites!

Authors just shouldn't read their own books
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Hard core Sigler fans
Would you recommend Blood Is Red to your friends? Why or why not?
Absolutely not.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Scott Sigler?
Anyone else.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment
Any additional comments?
This was just dreadful. I was expecting much more after reading the reviews. I guess every author has his legion of fans but I am definitely not one of Siglers. The stories were juvenile and pedantic. And his infernal rantings in-between each story almost drove me to drink. But the worst was his narration. Authors just should never read their own stories - it never goes well. This applies to all authors, even Steven King. Just pay someone to do it right. It would have made a huge difference in the quality of this audiobook. I also wish that Audible would offer redacted versions of compilation books like these - ones that don't have the authors preface to each story.

Listen up
This is great for new and old fans, I have been desperate for some more SS since I discovered him last year and it's also a great introduction to him if you are a new listener, I would seriously recommend you look at his novels.. The amount you get is disappointing but it's a great listen and turned me onto his website where I am now working my way through a (free) novel. It's disturbing and scary and a lots of easy to follow, actual science which I love, oh and he gives notes for all his stories which I also love (but are also easy to skip if you don't).
