Story
Jack Fleming was an investigative journalist in Prohibition-era Chicago until he got shot by an unknown assassin, bitten by his vampire girlfriend, and then became one of the undead. Now, this nice-guy nosferatu has a bunch of crazy vampire hunters on his trail, armed with crosses, silver bullets, and sharp wooden stakes. He doesn't know how they found out about him or why they are "out for his blood," but it's not a problem for this street-wise gumshoe, until someone starts shooting.

Story
Some of the parchment pages were the color of cream, thick and substantial, made to last many, many lifetimes. Other pages were thin and desiccated, positively yellow from age, and crackled alarmingly as Van Richten turned them over. There were no ornate illuminations, no fussy borders, only lines of plain text in hard black ink. The flowing handwriting was a bit difficult to follow at first; the writer's style of calligraphy had not been in common use for 300 years. No table of contents, but from the dates it looked to be some kind of history.

Before you know it, I'm being chased by an ugly thug with a gun, and a bullet blasts its way through my back, and, believe it or not, nothing happened. I survived! How? You guessed it. I, Jack Fleming, ace reporter, have been transformed into a vampire, which has its advantages. You never die, you never grow old, you sleep all day, and, best of all, you can hunt down your own murderer.

A unique perspective on vampire novels.
I first got hooked on Elrod's adventures about Jack Flemming, an average decent guy who becomes a vampire, in my late teens. My aunt had them on the bookshelf, it seemed a short read for a time killer, but ended up being so entertaining that I added all of Elrod's books to my collection and am finally to the point where any newly released novels I end up getting in hardback.
The setting of the books is in the 1920's-30's, in the height of the mob's power. The series is written in first person, which is refreshing in itself, but Elrod takes a story with the standard "dime novel" detective cliche's and dresses them up into something that's really interesting and doesn't feel rehashed at all.
Give this one a shot, I doubt you'll regret it, and more than likely you'll end up picking up the rest of them before they can pump out the audio books.

Fun Read
While I was totally new to this series, I decided hey, what the heck; and I'm glad I did. What a fun little ride. Is it a great work of literature, no. Will this be a timeless vampire story, again sadly no, but it is worth a read. It's fun, unique, and totally different than anything in this genre, it is much more a film noir sort of story than a vampire tale, but it is enjoyable. I wasn't thrilled with the ending, but then I find that the ending of a book, no matter how good, is still the end, and if you like a book, then you hate to see it coming. It was a little trite, but still enjoyable enough for me to go on and read the rest of the series. Wonder why audible doesn't have at least one or two of the others in this series?!

Kind of Like the Shadow..
This is a good read. It is a fast paced action filled series. It is a bit thin on explanations of the vampire world, but hey, it works.
This is basically the novel equivalent of an old radio serial (much like the shadow). The only supernatural element in this book is the fact that the main character is a vamire. Everyone and everything else is plain old vanilla human. Really, you could just have easily removed the vampire element and this would be a very good pulp-style mystery.
Much like in a pulp novel the charchters are a bit on thin thin side, mainly just sterotypes. The thing that makes the books work is the author does a great job of presenting the emotional elements in this book. There is a lot of violence, but none of it is glamorized and is shown in all its brutality. The main character is powerful, but balanced by inexperience and naiveté.
There is a romance element to the novel, but it does not dominate the story. This is a vampire book with a romance involved not a romance novel that happens to contain vampires. That is a major distinction in my book. While a bit stereotypical in places this is a fun read and well worth a listen. It kind of makes me wish someone would write a full-length Shadow novel though.

I love this series in print and was thrilled to see book 1 in Audio. In the past I have been let down by the audio version of a book I really liked as a result of narration quality or simply a narrator who's voice talent does not fit the topic. I am thrilled to say that neither is the case here. Whitener has taken the persona of Jack Fleming as his own in a way that truely brings the tale to life. My only complaint is that with 10 books so far in the series we have not seen any more of them here in Audio.

Film noir fun
In Bloodlist, Jack Fleming is a reporter vampire trying to solve his own murder in Capone's Chicago. His main source of help comes from an actor/private investigator and this leads to some dryly funny scenes. If you are a fan of film noir and vampires, you will like this book and this narrator. While Jack Fleming is similar to Sam Spade or Mike Hammer, he is not jaded. He is a nice and honest vampire who loves his family. Bloodlist is Casablanca infused and the narrator completes this effect with dry delivery in the style of Humphrey Bogart without parroting Bogart's voice. This is a first rate novel and the narrator is fantastic. I can't believe I have waited this long to read a book by Pat Elrod. Now, I want to listen to all of her books. I hope to see them on Audible soon.

New kind of vampire
Loved this story because of Elrod's spin on the legend. Her vamp isn't a slavering beast overcome with bloodlust, but an average guy trying to work out how to survive within the limitations that his 'condition' imposes on him. A very good tale. Can't wait till the next book is on audible.

Entertaining
This turned out to be an entertaining read. FOND AS I am of all things vampire, this seemed a must-try. It's gripping, and the main character's voice comes through loud and strong in the first person narrative. I could have wished that the hero had fought back a bit more, and I wasn't overly keen on the heroine, but this is still a book I would recommend to anyone who enjoys mystery and the supernatural. Let's hope there will be more titles from this series on audio soon.
