When a grisly murder occurs on the Isle of Lewis that bears similarities to a brutal killing on the mainland, Edinburgh detective Fin Macleod is dispatched to the Outer Hebrides to investigate, embarking at the same time on a voyage into his own troubled past. As Fin reconnects with the people and places of his tortured childhood, the beautiful island and its ancient customs once again begin to assert their grip on his psyche. Story
In Scotland's Outer Hebrides, a man washes up on a deserted beach, hypothermic and completely disoriented. He has no idea who he is or how he got there. The only clue to his condition is a map of the island showing a desolate, ancient path called the Coffin Road. With a sense of dread and no clear idea what lies at the other end, he knows he must follow the trail if he has any hope of discovering his identity. Meanwhile, homicide detective George Gunn makes the rough ocean crossing to a remote, sea-battered lighthouse to investigate a brutal murder.

Publisher's Summary
"CATNIP FOR ARMCHAIR SLEUTHS" (Kirkus Reviews, Starred Review)
"ONE OF THE BEST MYSTERY WRITERS ON THE MARKET TODAY" (The Mystery Gazette)
Continuing his string of investigations into stubborn cold cases, ex-forensics superstar Enzo Macleod takes the case, diving into the big business and high stakes of French haute cuisine.
Seven years ago, France's top chef, Marc Fraysse, summoned the world's culinary press to his remote restaurant in central France to make an announcement that he said would cause shockwaves in the culinary community.
Instead of an announcement, the reporters were shocked to find instead that the great chef had been murdered, and they left without a clue about the message the chef intended to deliver or who might have killed him.
Winter has settled in around the mountaintop restaurant, causing complications, as Enzo learns more about the complex web of relationships that surrounded the celebrated (if also unpredictable) chef - a spurned lover, a jealous wife, an estranged brother, an embittered food critic....
Macleod begins to see parallels with his own life and loves. In diving into this new case, he finds himself reopening old wounds of his own.

Great book
Slow start but once you get going it is a page turner. The characters are deeply drawn and the plot keeps churning. Food and wine a la Nero Wolfe become part of the narrative.
