Publisher's Summary

Why are we drawn to the ocean each summer? Why does being near water set our minds and bodies at ease? In Blue Mind, Wallace J. Nichols revolutionizes how we think about these questions, revealing the remarkable truth about the benefits of being in, on, under, or simply near water.

Grounded in cutting-edge studies in neurobiology, cognitive psychology, economics, and medicine, and made real by stories of innovative scientists, doctors, athletes, artists, environmentalists, businesspeople and lovers of nature - stories that fascinate the mind and touch the heart - Blue Mind will awaken readers to the vital importance of water to the health and happiness of us all.

Critic Reviews

"[Wallace J. Nichols], more Keanu Reeves in his surf-god pomp than lab-bound scientist - is the very embodiment of his theme...confiding, rhetorical, blissed-out, the writing seems to emerge from one of the flotation tanks Nichols uses to seek out his inner fish.... The tone is that of an extended Ted talk...at the heart of Nichols's book are real revelations." (Philip Hoare, Guardian)

Read it, as it will change your mind!

I recommend this book to everyone, but especially those who love water, in particular the ocean. It will explain scientifically why we are drawn to swim in it!

not my cup of tea

I grew up with and in the ocean, a 3rd generation surfer, diver and fisherman. And for 15years I lived and worked on the sea.
In the first couple of chapters, I struggled to draw out any more factual information than the title. I felt it was repetitive and is the first book that I have very wished I could return. Pretty bleak.

Fascinating

Really interesting stuff. In fact. Stuff we all know deep down but once explained and proven makes complete sense. Great book.
