Publisher's Summary

Winner of the RNA Romantic Saga Award 2021.

An inspiring and uplifting tale of women on the home front. For fans of Annie Groves and Nancy Revell.

On the ground, the crowd of men stood with their mouths agape, watching the wings soar into the air, the tail kept impressively steady and the small plane with a woman at the controls disappearing into the May sunshine.

It's 1942, and World War Two is in full swing. Roberta 'Bobby' Hollis has joined the Air Transport Auxiliary in a team of pilots known as the 'glamour girls'. Just as capable as the men, these women ferry aircraft, parts and people between factories, assembly plants and airfields.

After a childhood being ignored on the family farm by a taciturn father and a traumatised mother, Bobby has always wanted an escape, and the ATA seems like the perfect opportunity to realise her dreams and help her country win the war.

But there's always something standing in her way. Her friend Harriet, who attracts chaos wherever she goes. A demanding father, who would like to marry her off to a rich farmer from the next county. And the family secrets that threaten to engulf everything. And all that's on top of the danger she's in every day as part of the ATA.

As Bobby navigates her way through life and love, she has to learn that controlling a huge, four-engined bomber might just be easier than controlling her own life....

Woman of strength - wow!

This is the 2nd of Shirley Mann novels
One of the most enjoyable audio books I have listened to.
The insight into the female roles during g WWII was intriguing and for any history buff a sheer delight
I can’t wait to see when Hannah’s War is available on audio
You smile, shed a tear but just thoroughly become part of this story as the story unfolds

Couldn’t stop listening…!

Just couldn’t stop listening to this one. Great storyline and some historical facts I didn’t know about WW2. Also I really liked how this story overlaps with the author’s other novel ‘Lily’s War’. I hope there are more to make this a series…

women's struggle in a man's world of war.

Whilst this story is fiction it depicts the life of women pilots in the ATA in what feels to be a real and true account. well researched and extremely readable it also covers aspects of war history previously unknown to me and of great interest.
There are moments of excitement and suspense as well as romance and intrigue, enough to keep a reader's interest and enough to be anxious to know what will happen next.

There is a good atmosphere of the times and of place which for me is always important in my reading.
I recommend this book to all who wish to escape for a while into another woman's life and time.

Loved this!

If I had been reading it I wouldn’t have put it down. Listened to it in 2 days, loved learning even more about the tricks and “hacks” that they used, along with raw descriptions mixed with empowering women and of course romance. Downloaded without hesitation after listening to Lilys War and can’t wait to get Hannah’s war next!

I loved them all

I've now read all these books and loved them all!! Beautifully written wonderful stories. The narrator was brilliant, just glad she didn't try the Norfolk accent ... I'm from Norfolk and know it's a difficult one, haha. I love the fact that it's based on truth and such a delightful reminder that we women were amazing in WWII. Thank you

Fabulous

I absolutely loved listening to this book.
The narrator did a great job bringing the characters to life.
The story is fascinating and gave me a much better understanding of the roles of the ATA girls but also the horrors and pain that was endured by so many during the war. Please listen to this book if you enjoy learning more but also realising some fun was had during extremely difficult times

Not for me.

im sorry but I didn't enjoy this book, I found it to be quite boring and the leading character was too dull.
