Publisher's Summary

Paul Gallo saw the report on the news: a mass murderer leading police to his victims' graves in remote Dread's Hand, Alaska.

It's not even a town; more like the bad memory of a town. The same bit of wilderness where his twin brother went missing a year ago. As the bodies are exhumed, Paul travels to Alaska to get closure and put his grief to rest.

But the mystery is only beginning. What Paul finds are superstitious locals who talk of the devil stealing souls, and a line of wooden crosses to keep what's in the woods from coming out. He finds no closure because no one can explain exactly what happened to Danny.

And the more he searches for answers, the more he finds himself becoming part of the mystery...

Critic Reviews

"An elegant, twisted, gripping slow-burn of a novel that burrows under the skin and nestles deep.” (RT Book Reviews, Top Pick)

Excellent! Atmospheric and creepy.

"They're all dead now. I killed them."

An excellent work of dark fiction from Mr. Malfi. You can feel the chill of this one in your bones. Atmospheric and creepy.

Best part of the book was a mini background story

There was a story near the end that was creepier than the rest of the book. I wanted more of that story than what I got in the book. The writer is good and I will look for more of their work based solely on the mini background story near the end. I wished I got a better pay-off than what we got. The narrator was amazing although I was hesitant at first, Charles Constant proved me wrong.

Now this is horror

I have read so many books lately that are labeled as 'horror' but are actually just mysteries. This book is straight up disturbing and scary as hell. I have read other reviews that mention a small back story at the end of the book that is really scary and they are RIGHT! I would love to see a sequel of this book and dig deeper into this monster in the woods... Or is it a vampire... A werewolf? You decide.

Don't waste your time.

This story goes nowhere. The entire novel feels like the first chapter of almost any horror novel you've ever read. The climax at the end should have been the narrative hook at the beginning to get you interested. Basically what you have here is a guy walking around town showing people a picture of his missing brother for the first 7.5 hours. Don't waste your time or your credit on this one. There is no pay off for tolerating it's slow and trudging pace.

bone white crazy

beautiful, haunting and heartbreaking. Ronald Malfi did a great job with the relationship between Paul and Danny, or lack there of. I have sisters so I could relate to Paul very much. I thought he acted like anyone would if their sibling was missing. the story is really good. very much "this is how we've always done it and that's how it is." I liked that very much. I highly recommend this book.

Slow read. Not much to story.

Really slow read. Frankly seemed lots of rambling without any point. I finished it and thought is that all there is to the story.

Fantastic, Terrifying!

Well crafted story, great characters, terrifying! Why isn't this a movie/series?
Will definitely listen to this author again.

Lasting, creepy images

The book begins a little slowly but after the first two chapters I couldn't stop listening. I do not generally find myself creeped out but holy moly the author does such a great job of it that I can't look at the woods without my stomach turning!

The reader did a great job, but the women author than Jill's voices were nails on chalkboard.

Very Good!

This book was really gripping. I have to say that I really hated the townspeople. Not only were they weird, they were really rude. The book does explain why they acted that way but they still just annoyed me. I felt sorry for Paul throughout the entire book. He really went through a lot looking for his brother. The ending was good too.

Vague and anti-climactic

It was hard to keep my mind from wandering throughout the entirety of the story and in the end it just sort of fizzled out. Vague and unsatisfying.
