Very Hard to Listen To

I am an avid listener of many Great Courses audiobooks, and I had hoped that this book would be somewhere in that camp. Unfortunately, I found this book very difficult to listen to, for multiple reasons.

The first thing I found off-putting was when lists were read without any pauses or separation between listed items, causing the dialogue to sound like a very confusing, run-on sentence. Later, the frequency of grammatical errors caused me to start wondering if the numerous faults rested with the original book, the narrator, or a combination of both. Finally, I found it frequently difficult to determine whether the author was discussing the person with BPD, himself (the author), or someone else (such as a spouse), as he interchanged pronouns so frequently that it was hard to know for sure.

While I did hold on to the end of the audiobook, I do not feel like I understand the subject of BPD any more than I did already after spending about an hour reading what I could online. Furthermore, I had hoped to learn something about DBT as an intervention for BPD, but it was barely discussed. The book contained a lot of words, but very little substance.

I feel very bad giving such a bad review, but this book delivered very little value in exchange for the time I spent listening to it. I hope to save a few other people the same frustrations as I experienced while listening to it, and that is the reason for my review.

Mislead by the positive reviews

Miguel Russell’s book, Borderline Personality Disorder is probably the worst published work I have ever read. I initially chose it because the description promised to be very informative and I was able to purchase it on Audible cheaply. Despite its glowing reviews, which I am now convinced must have been written by robots, the book was written in the way pamphlets are.

Endless lists of information, a cold voice, and a lack of case examples plagued this book along with the fact that it was clearly not proofread. I feel as though I learned barely more than I would have by skimming a few internet articles.

The narrator displays almost no tonal inflection and the constant changes in perspective (you, they, I, we) make it impossible to tell who the author is referring to. Many sentences are repeated back to back, making me question whether anyone edited this book at all.

I have never reviewed a book before but this was simply so bad, that I felt I had to.

Helpful

Very practical, helpful information. Good for everyone not just those with BPD. I wish it had a different title as I'd like to recommend to others but worried that it may offend.

This may be a book written by a woman who once suffered from BPD, but it is a siren of hope for all of us with a mental illness. An exceptional book!

Get this book!

Great book! I loved it. It helped me to understand someone I loved with BPD but also myself. I found myself in her, in smaller doses. BPD is the extreme of so many human emotions we all feel. We just control them better. They are black or white, non-BPD are more gray or we are able to be more gray. If you have a person with BPD in your life, this book is great. Also, the narrator does a fantastic job!

Honest and Brave

It was an intense look into the Author's therapy, life and struggles with her Mental Illness. I have a very special person in my life who suffers from this diagnosis and it opened my mind and heart.

Excellent information though delivery could be better

The information provided is clear and detailed and incredibly useful.
The voice reading sounds somewhat robotic as though it’s computer read and not a person, sometimes tricky to follow as it swings between 1st and 3rd person. This is my only constructive criticism of an otherwise brilliant and informative listen.

Disappointing

Occasionally moderately interesting, but really didn’t like the delivery and repetition. Also the insinuation that having sex on a first date was a sign that a woman (note, not a man!) had bpd.

I have BPD

My review of this book is that it is extremely basic in its listing of techniques or coping mechanisms for living with BPD. It consistently makes and remakes the same talking points, without elaborating deeply enough. It also makes use of words to describe feelings or situations that could easily be “dumbed down” to allow for a wider variety of audiences. It is negatively based rather than attempting to give listeners hope for their recovery. Also, it contributes to lining the pockets of the worlds biggest hoarder of wealth, and for that I will be deleting the app, continuing to never support him or anything he creates.
