Story
Tom drew back into the shadow of the wall, for at that moment, the gate opened, and two of the governor's black horses appeared, pulling a large wagon behind them. Tom could just make out the dark forms of several men crouching low on the seat. The horses' hooves must have been padded, for they scarcely made a sound, even on the cobblestones of the courtyard.

Everyone knew that a tile roof was a precarious perch. Everyone saw, too, that the steadily rising water had reached a corner of the attic floor near the stairway and was beginning to spread, slowly but surely, toward them. Based on the great flood that swept over Holland in 1953, the gripping story When the Dikes Broke follows the tale of the van Rossem family as they are awakened by sirens and the clanging of church bells and soon realize that the dikes have broken. As the water rises to their roof, the family is separated, and a desperate and daring search is set in place.

This acclaimed story of World War II is rich in suspense, characterization, plot, and spiritual truth. Every element of occupied Holland is united in a story of courage and hope: a hidden Jewish child, an underdiver, a downed RAF pilot, an imaginative, daring underground hero, and the small things of family life which surprisingly carry on in the midst of oppression.

Great book
My kids and I loved the story! Great writing, and loveable characters. The reader, we didn’t feel, is suited for this type of book. Her take with many of the characters was more angry and dramatic than we felt they needed to be, given the dialogue. I wonder if it was her first time reading the book. We’ll read it again soon as a read aloud rather than this particular audiobook.

Educational and entertaining.
My 8 year old granddaughter and I really enjoyed listening to this book. We were both disappointed when it ended. The person reading the book did a great job. Not only did we learn many things about ancient Egypt, the book held or interest and caused us to feel we were there in the midst of the story.

Exciting look in ancient Egypt
We listened to this as part of our homeschool study of ancient Egypt and thoroughly enjoyed it. Our children were sad when it was over. I thought the narrator did a great job of bringing the characters to life in the story. We look forward to reading and listening to more stories by this author. A real quality piece of historical fiction for anyone interested in ancient Egypt.
