And a growing mountain of clinical research correlates screen tech with disorders like ADHD, addiction, anxiety, depression, increased aggression, and even psychosis.

As pediatrician and mother of two teenagers Cara Natterson explains, puberty starts in boys long before any visible signs appear, and that causes confusion about their changing temperaments for boys and parents alike. Often, they also grow quieter as they grow taller, which leads to less parent-child communication. But, as Natterson warns in Decoding Boys, we respect their increasing "need" for privacy, monosyllabic conversations, and alone time at their peril.

What is the boy crisis? It's a crisis of education. For the first time in American history, our sons will have less education than their dads. It's a crisis of mental health. As boys become young men, their suicide rates go from equal to girls to six times that of young women. It's a crisis of sexuality. Sex is a minefield for our sons. They're bombarded with mixed messages, afraid of being either too sensitive or not sensitive enough.

In Dr. Mark McConville's decades of experience as a family clinical psychologist, perhaps no problem has been more fraught than that of young adults who fail to successfully transition from adolescence into adulthood. These kids - technically adults - just can't get it together: They can't hold a job, they struggle to develop meaningful relationships, and they often end up back in their parents' spare bedroom or on the couch. In fact, studies show that one in four Americans aged 25 to 34 neither work nor attend school - a problem that spans all socioeconomic and geographic boundaries.

We want our children to succeed, to be their best, and to do their best, but what if they are not on board? A few years ago, Ned Johnson and Bill Stixrud started noticing the same problem from different angles: even high-performing kids were coming to them acutely stressed and lacking any real motivation. Many complained that they had no real control over their lives.

Love is important, but it is respect that is the key to your son's heart. The idea of moms respecting their sons may sound alien to some, but it seems to ignite curiosity across the board. It is easy to relate to the need for all of us to feel a mother's love, but is that the same thing as respect? Even for young boys, the effect of respect is nothing short of astounding when applied properly.

Publisher's Summary
Why America's sons are underachieving, and what we can do about it.
Something is happening to boys today. From kindergarten to college, American boys are, on average, less resilient and less ambitious than they were a mere 20 years ago. The gender gap in college attendance and graduation rates has widened dramatically.
While Emily is working hard at school and getting A's, her brother Justin is goofing off. He's more concerned about getting to the next level in his videogame than about finishing his homework.
In Boys Adrift, Dr. Leonard Sax delves into the scientific literature and draws on more than 20 years of clinical experience to explain why boys and young men are failing in school and disengaged at home. He shows how social, cultural, and biological factors have created an environment that is literally toxic to boys. He also presents practical solutions, sharing strategies which educators have found effective in re-engaging these boys at school, as well as handy tips for parents about everything from homework, to videogames, to medication.

Profound
This is the most enlightening book I've ever listened to in my 70 years. Dr Sax truly understands today's culture, education system and how are culture is negatively impacting our boys' view and their place in this world.
We are homeschooling our 9 year old grandson and earnestly incorporating the Dr's idea of hands on learning and just being outdoors. He is responding well to the change. He loves the science projects, the hikes, the nature watching and has a better attitude towards the sit down type of work we have to do. In part, I think working him physically helps his attitude and spirit.
He still will "buck" us on academic work but it is less so. We try to intersperse it with experiments, cooking, cleaning, riding bikes, walking and just playing. Life is definitely improving all the way around.
I am EXTREMELY grateful for Leanard Sax and his wisdom.

An absolute must read/listen
As a mother of two boys, one teenage and one preteen boy this was so informative. It gave me the answers I was looking for. It’s not a quick fix but does answer the questions I was asking and looking for. The author was very knowledgeable and gave good insight. I will be listening to his other books as well. Anyone with boys or around boys, ie: coaches, teachers, parents, should all read this book to see what’s going on with our boys and how hat is having an effect on our girls and our society as a whole.

This book really hit home for me! I would definitely recommend this book to any parent whose child is already diagnosed with ADHD or thinks their child may have it.
This books brings a lot of things into perspective for me, as I am currently raising a ‘boy adrift’. Sax is able to educate his readers on 5 factors that boys face today and does it in a way that I think every parent can relate to.

Hard to dispute if you live with teens
Many of the stories told are mirrored in the relationships my boys have. I think the author could elaborate more on how quickly things can change up or down for a teen boy. The old concept of 21 days in a row makes a habit comes to mind. If you read (listen) to the book and observe you can find room for improvement as a parent. I did.

plausible but full of faulty logic
Dr. Sax has written a book that includes some research but much more observational/anecdotal data from his own personal experience conflated as wide, group level facts.
This book is a good example that two different people can look at The same observation and walk away with a different conclusions. Some of the ideas in the book are valid, however.
Fundamentally, this book hits at the core of 'nature versus nurture' and seems to suggest that nurture should conform to nature without any aspiration to evolve to the next/higher level that might be feasible ad a society. This is stated because the book is not comprehensive but aims to provide gender segregated education ad a solution to problems that may need gender mixed experiential learning. e.g. a co-ed scouting group does a far better job of giving safe space for outdoor interactions than to segregate scouting. The intent is decent for Dr Sax but the solutions may require looking at the world around us differently.
There are many personal choices by the author regarding how to present data. For example, When speaking about enduring cultures, the author chose to completely ignore the far east cultures, which may have different lessons for the problems considered.
All in all, if you read the book read it with an open mind and try to see if your solutions might be different than those offered. At the end of the day, all the grownups amongst us have to tackle this problem so the future generations may benefit.

Eye opening
As a male in my early 30s and new parent to a son I selected this book on a whim thinking that it might help me become a good father. Leonard Sax explains very clearly the reasons for so many young men losing their way and finding themselves stuck, without motivation or direction, finding bad role models and escaping into their own little worlds and that of the Internet and video games.
This book has also been eye opening in relation to my own upbringing and the path I have chosen.
The audio book is well read and an enjoyable listen.

The book that changed our life
I have a 7 year old son, and wasn’t sure this was a book for me, as he is a clever boy as I can’t see adrift. BUT, I have had a bad consciense about letting him be too much on the iPad. As a single mother with only one kid, it has been my go to thing to get things done at home. After hearing the chapter about gaming I felt like shit, but knew I had to take responsibility. I cut our Internet for 2 weeks and my son was so angry with me. For about 2 hours... then everything changed. He started playing with boble wrap, drawing (he has been hating to do that!) and talking alot more. We have tried 30 minutes of iPad, one iPad free day and so on. But he always focused on when he could play again. I think the total cut helped us take the fokus away totally. I am so thankful that I listened to the book and followed the tip.
Other parts (ADHD/medication) is a bit american. I live in Norway and we don’t medicate that much. But in total - if you have a boy - any age - LISTEN TO THIS!
