Story
I’m no Prince Charming, and the last thing I want is a Cinderella. My instructions were simple: Scour the city for a fake fiancée who’s not my type at all. Have her on my jet Monday morning, dressed for a yacht vacation. I need a woman believable enough to convince a certain client that I’ve changed my playboy ways...yet too annoying to tempt me - no emotional entanglements, thank you very much. This is business only. If she’s unfazed by my looks and wealth, all the better. Should be easy. Right? Apparently not, because my people go and hire Tabitha. My hairdresser.

He's a billionaire heir. A grump supreme. Hater of people. Bigger hater of peopling with people. And my new fake boyfriend. "Emotionally unavailable" doesn’t even begin to describe Hayes Rutherford. He has more defenses than a nuclear missile silo. And he’s the ultimate catch of the century. At least, according to his bank statement. My job’s simple: Keep all interested ladies away from the walled-off heir, by pretending to be his one true love. But you know what they say about fake-dating a billionaire: It’s all fun and games, until the scandals start.

I knew it was a bad idea to get on the elevator. Because now, I have three problems. Number one, I’m stuck in the elevator. Number two, I’m soaking wet from the rain. Number three, he got in before the doors closed. Miles Humphries. My neighbor. The one I hate. The biggest jerk I’ve ever met. Mr. Bachelor-for-Life and I, Rose Taylor, are like night and day. Imagine my jaw dropping when he asks me to be his fake fiancée. And move in with him. Together with my cat. Hello? That’s disaster waiting to happen. But then he makes me an offer I can’t refuse.

CEO millionaire Max Fletcher is a single dad in desperate need of a nanny. Cozy Barlow is in the middle of her self-appointed “gap year” and doing everything she can to detach from her past. He’s the devil himself: Damon Copeland (he practically carries a pitchfork), fiery-hot, a torturously sexy body, and a killer smile (if he ever smiled). He’s also the top dog at my father’s company and my brother’s best friend. Oh, and someone I accidentally slept with. In my defense, that was before I knew who he was and before he hired me. Now, my one-night stand has turned into my boss. What’s worse, he’s Mr. Bosshole Superior: brutish, broody, and impatient. He’s also 6’4". And I’m pretty sure he hates me. The first time I met Merrick Crawford was during my job interview. Well, technically, I’d met him 20 minutes earlier when he’d barged into a fitting room a few doors down from my appointment. I yelled. He yelled. After an argument while standing in my bra, I proceeded to smash the door into the gorgeous jerk, trying to yank it shut. As you might imagine, I was freaked out when I discovered that the rude guy was my potential new boss. Yet he didn’t seem to recognize me. Or so I thought.... Until we wound up bickering again during my interview and he told me to go sniff my armpit.

Am I friends with JP Cane? Ha! That's laughable. Besides the fact that he’s adopted some far-fetched notion from the movie When Harry Met Sally that says men and women can't be friends and work together, it’s safe to say we're not friends. He's annoyingly loud, obnoxiously handsome, and has made an art out of poking all my hot buttons...multiple times a day. So you can imagine how disgruntled I am when I not only have to fly to San Francisco with him for work, but stay in the same penthouse. Yup, we're sharing the same air, 24-7. We're talking full-fledged working roommates.

Winnifred Gobaldi and Byron Visser are not best friends. Yes, they’ve known each other for years, but they’re not even friendly. Winnie considers them more like casual, distant acquaintances who find each other barely tolerable, especially when he's being condescending (which is all the time). The truth is, they have nothing in common. She’s a public school science teacher with stars in her eyes, and he’s a pretentious, joyless double PhD turned world-famous best-selling fiction author.

I never should have gone commando in that dress. I'm almost positive the rest of it wouldn't have happened if I hadn't been dangling off a hotel balcony. And of course the one person to witness my mortification had to be him. Camden Cox. Sure, today he's gorgeous and wealthy, and fine, I can admit he has a great sense of humor. But once upon a time, he was the boy who loved to make my life miserable. But I'm Sophie Abbott, and if there's one thing I'm good at, it's making a mess. Only this is a disaster. Because after a wild night in Vegas, I'm pretty sure we got married.

I knocked up my best friend's sister. Let's start with how she decided to inform me and Pacey the news...together. Imagine that nightmare. I was going into what I thought was a hockey marketing meeting, and then bam! I'm going to be a dad and my best friend/teammate is attempting to imprint my face with his fist. Threats were tossed around, friendships were revoked, and then I was marched up to her apartment, suitcases in hand, and forced to live with her so I could take care of her every need. Now I'm finding it harder and harder not to fall for my best friend's little sister.

Bad luck seems to follow me. Last night, I grabbed a drink at the bar near my new workplace. I met the most sophisticated man when he “stole” my table. We bantered and danced, and I went home with a stranger for the first time in my life. The next morning, I find out my hot one-night stand is my new boss. Gone is the playful, charming man from last night. Luke Maxwell is all business, acting as if our night together never happened. He’s impossible to please, but I’m determined to succeed. This job is my chance to prove myself and put my past—and my ex—behind me.

It’s official. I’m totally hopeless at love, parenting, and life. Single mom? Check. Massive debt? Check. A sassy daughter who inherited my gift of snark? Ugh. Check. I work three jobs, go to school, and do my best to be in my kid’s life. Men are the last thing on my mind. I wouldn’t have time to look at a man even if he fell into my lap. Until he does. Thanks to my spawn who keeps calling some famous relationship expert, airing my disastrous life in her podcast.

What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. Or does it? Okay, let me explain. I broke into my crush’s dressing room to sniff his tights (not in a pervy way, I swear!) and got busted while, um... you get the idea. He then kind of, sort of blackmailed me into agreeing to a fake green card marriage with him. But hey, I’m not complaining. Next thing I know, we’re on a flight to Vegas to make our friends and family think we had a crazy drunken night and, in the spur of the moment, tied the knot. Except… that’s exactly what happens.

It seemed like a good idea at the time - I’d weed through the candidates, and bring her my top picks. But then he responded. Is it wrong to date the guy I screened for my bestie? Publisher's Summary
Max Hilton is my high school nemesis turned billionaire. And tomorrow I deliver his lunch order.
In a cat costume.
You know he’s going to love it. He’ll smile that smirky smile, sitting there all superior in his gleaming tower, the wealthiest and most notorious playboy in all of New York, the king of everything.
Turns out it wasn’t curiosity that killed the cat - it was mortification.
I’m almost ready to quit my lunch delivery job, but then my roommate tosses me a copy of The Max Hilton Playbook: Ten Golden Rules for Picking up the Hottest Girl in the Room.
It’s the book that catapulted him to stardom. And it’s my new bible.
I’m going to use his own techniques against him. I’ll wrap him around my little finger, bring him to his knees, and crush his steely heart. Call it payback for all the single girls who had to endure legions of losers wielding his legendary tactics.
But seeing Max every day, I’m discovering a side of him I didn’t even know existed - he’s not the jerky guy I thought he was. He has this smile he shows only to me, and it melts my heart. His touch sends shivers down my spine. And those forbidden kisses are driving me wild.
Falling for him was not in my plan.
Am I breaking his rules or will his rules break me first?
A standalone romantic comedy from New York Times best-selling author Annika Martin!

Neva Nevarre makes every female character sound vapid and stuck up. Her inflections and overall narration makes no sense. Can’t make it past the terrible narration to know if I like the story.

I laughed, I cringed, I was a bit disappointed.
Love Jason Clark’s voice and narration; Neva Nevarre’s harsh nasal voice is hard to tolerate. If it weren’t for Annika Martin’s writing, I wouldn’t.
This is thus far the book in the Billionaire series that comes up short. So many missed opportunities, the affection and feelings feel contrived and there is one scene that is so lame and immature it’s embarrassing. I cringe thinking about it. I will say I laughed so hard at some of the build up into their relationship. Some of the absurdity was hilarious. It was great until they got into the relationship, then it felt a bit off.

lots of meanness
first half had a good number of funny parts but there was so much trying to make the other feel bad or one ups-man-ship. that was just sad. the years they wasted because they didn't communicate - sad. Neva Nevarre read (what seemed like) a large majority of the book. I was looking forward to hearing JC.

Good writing but weak meet-cute concept.
I enjoyed this book. It is the fourth that I have heard by the writer Annika Martin and narrators Jason Clarke and Neva Nevarre. The other three books had better storylines. What makes this story weaker than others in the series is that the lady and the billionaire knew each other in high school. What happens in the book is sort of like a meet-cute and sort of not. What seemed to me implausible and made the story weak was how the meet cute was instigated. That is not explained until more than half-way through the story, which in my opinion undermines the concept of meet-cute. Neva Nevarre has great intonation and emotion. As needed when appropriate she emotes dry wit, sarcasm, excitement, nervousness. It all comes through her voice. There are several gal-pals in the series, and her voice is different for each. Jason Clarke does a fair job, but I find his voice a bit growly-croaky. I was wondering if he had a sore throat. Maybe he recorded his voice that way on purpose, but it did not work for me. Annika Martin certainly has a way with idiom and phrases. Very enjoyable. Even though there isn't a picture on the cover of a man bare-chested and ripped, this is one of those books with explicit sex.

Mama Mia!
What happens when a Jersey girl meets her high-school crush as a grown-up? Fireworks and loads of laughs!
I'm in love with this series. Who doesn't fantasize about meeting someone with the money, glitz, and glamor to upgrade their lives? The author does a great job of bringing her characters to life and Mia (h) is no exception. I loved Mia as the roommate in Wake up Call Girl and I was waiting on her story. Max (H) is one cocky SOB but so sweet under those layers. She had poor girl problems, he had rich boy problems - but they rose above those problems together and that's what makes them so interesting.
One critique is the author really drags the stories out. There are times when I found myself screaming, jeez just get to it already - that propensity lost a star in this rating. Other than that, read it too see the funny ways a second chance at love can become the only love you need.

Wonky fun-ville
Annika Martin is quickly becoming one of my insta download authors. She does crazy + outrageous + fun in a surprisingly "I can see that happening in real life" way. This isn't my fav in the series but it was still entertaining.
I know Neva + Jason narrations. I love them. This duo works for me. They are auto download for me anytime.
The story is about two high school rivals / friends all grown up. Their HS shenanigans were so epic that a former classmate thought it was a good idea to place them in each other's orbit as adults. Except what started out as a joke turns out to be a bad but life changing idea. The main characters have some pent up issues from HS to work out + navigate adulthood + hopefully find their jive as a couple. There is a lot of antics that is very high school-ish but it works. I chuckled alot and even enjoyed the ending. Not alot of angst and not alot of drama. It's a light listen and definately a rom-com type book.
Honestly this is one of those books where there will be mixed reviews. I fall in the "get it" group. I like Annika's books so far and I will continue to listen to her books.

Fun listen
fun but easily forgotten. Didn't feel was as good as others in series, perhaps just not quite the same depth. still, a clever plot line to keep it going, and make lead wasn't an asshole, which I think a couple of her previous male leads showed tendencies towards. Neither just really got me gunning for them. narrators did decent job - male narrator does a particularly good job, emotion without overplaying it, and his female voices don't sound camp.
