Nothing is trickier than the truth. All Loki the trickster god of Asgard wants is a peaceful life where he's free to stir up a bit of harmless mischief. But when he's struck by a painful vision of blood, ash, and death he knows his fun has run out. Refusing to have his life obliterated by some stuffy prophecy, Loki feels he must save Asgard. Story
Anwuli Okwudili prefers to be called AO. To her, these initials have always stood for Artificial Organism. AO has never really felt...natural, and that's putting it lightly. Her parents spent most of the days before she was born praying for her peaceful passing because even in-utero she was "wrong". But she lived. Then came the car accident years later that disabled her even further. Yet instead of viewing her strange body the way the world views it, as freakish, unnatural, even the work of the devil, AO embraces all that she is.

Publisher's Summary
From a beloved fantasy author comes this fresh feminist retelling of Sleeping Beauty about one girl destined for greatness - and the powerful sister ready to protect her by any means necessary.
Miriam may be the daughter of Queen Alethia of Tirendell, but she's not a princess. She's the child of Alethia and her previous husband, the King's Champion, who died fighting for the king, and she has no ambitions to rule. When her new baby sister, Aurora, heir to the throne, is born, she's ecstatic. She adores the baby, who seems perfect in every way. But on the day of Aurora's christening, an uninvited Dark Fae arrives, prepared to curse her, and Miriam discovers she possesses impossible power.
Soon, Miriam is charged with being trained in both magic and combat to act as chief protector to her sister. But shadowy threats are moving closer and closer to their kingdom, and Miriam's dark power may not be enough to save everyone she loves, let alone herself.

Huge Lackey fan, this did not satisfy
I love Lackey's works, so I bought this one without even thinking. Love her Valdemar Series, as well as the Elemental Masters series. I honestly thought based on the title that this was one of fairy tale classic spin off books that Lackey is really good at writing. I could not sink into this one. I felt that the story dragged on and on, with the main character training, and saving her sister, training and saving her sister and training again. Things finally picked up towards the end, but it didn't leave me with the inner satisfaction of having been transported into a new world that is a break from the current one. I found myself checking the clock multiple times "how much longer?" The character development was minimal I felt, little true adversary and evolvement.
The narrator was absolutely fantastic.

one star off for volume variability
Great story, if a little too goody-goody. Great narration, but the volume shifts from whisper quiet to yelling loud are a problem. The first I couldn't hear without changing the volume and replaying. The second earned complaints from people in another room. Annoying.

A great big bundle of meh
Obviously meant to be the start of a series, but it doesn't grip enough to make me interested in what's to follow. Performance is adequate, when Polly Lee isn't attempting to put on an accent -- then it becomes distracting.

I always enjoy Mercedes Lackey. this particular book I can honestly say rates in the top 5. her character development it's spot-on and her winding of the original fairy tale throughout is extremely well done. there are a lot of fantasy creatures in this book which clearly adds to the depth of the story.
