Publisher's Summary

A shunned princess. A reluctant king. A marriage that could save both their kingdoms...but destroy their hearts.

Though she is the oldest daughter, Princess Faraine lives in the background, shunned from court and kept out of sight. Her chronic illness makes her a liability to the crown, and she has learned to give place to her beautiful, favored younger sister in all things.

When the handsome and enigmatic Shadow King comes seeking a bride, Faraine is not surprised that her sister is his choice.

Though not eager to take a human bride, King Vor is willing to do what is necessary for the sake of his people. When he meets the lively Princess Ilsevel, he quickly agrees to a marriage arrangement.

So why can’t he get the haunting eyes of her older sister out of his head?

Passionate and alluring, Bride of the Shadow King is an arranged marriage tale with dual points-of-view (his and hers). The first book in a new fantasy romance series, this sweeping tale of love and betrayal is perfect for listeners looking for a touch of spice to go with the sweet in their next swoony, slow-burn romance.

Decent plot but slow

So this wasn't bad. But it was super slow moving. I felt like the main plot points in this book could've been dealt with quicker. The fact that the book ended when it did with the types of cliffhangers it did was kinda lackluster. There's so much that's not answered and it frustrated me more than made me want to read the next book. I needed more answers to make me really invest in the characters. Specifically, clarification on her powers or what is happening to the shadow realm. Also, the dual POV is great but the fact that when it switches POV it goes back in time recanting so much information from his or hers POV got annoying. I wanted the story to move along and keep up with pacing and this reiteration slowed it down a lot.

Overall, the story was intriguing and the court intrigue and plotting definitely complicated the love story. Which I didn't hate, however if you're looking for a happily ever after the cliffhangers in this book will make you want to chuck the book across the room. Barely anything gets solved or dealt with.

Overview: Our FMC is the eldest child of a human king. All of his children are blessed with magical gifts. However, for some unknown reason our MC is hated by her father. Our MMC comes to court from his world to find a human bride which will allow him to gain access to the human magic welders which he needs to break some kind of curse or plague that is wreaking havoc on his kingdom. Our MCs have a meet cute and are almost instantly drawn to each other but due to how much the human king dislikes our FMC she isn't a good bartering chip and thus the MMC weds her sister. Stuff happens and suddenly our FMC is thrust into her sisters place and pretends to be her sister to complete the treaty between kingdoms.

This is the first book I've read by the author.

This is the first book I've read by Syvia Mercedes and I have to say I really enjoyed it. I like a slow burn in a series that is introducing a new world to me. I really enjoyed this new take on the fae realm and customs and I'm looking for more. I can't wait for the next book to come out. A review I read before listening complained about the book going back and forth between points of view but I really like this approach because, the reader gets a glimpse into the thoughts each protagonist. The reviewer also complained about cliffhangers and unanswered questions, well without those why would there need to be another book? That's the nature of reading a series rather than a stand alone novel. I look forward to reading more by Sylvia Mercedes. I feel like I found a hidden Gem! The narrators: I loved their voices and I just got lost in their performance and I enjoyed listening to this book so much! If you love fairy stories, court intrigue and enjoy a slow burn , then you will love this book!

plot holes, plot armor, and a cliff hanger

slow burn is cool when done right. This story doesn't do it well. in the first half it was good, the slow burn was building and worth it. But then half way through you have the FMC lying for no reason. There was genuinely no reasoning for the FMC to go along with her families lies at all. especially since he, the MC, had already established that he originally wanted to marry the FMC.

like I'm good with drama, but not imaginary drama, used to create length to a book that ends on a cliff hanger. you added 5 hours to a book that weren't needed.

also the female lead is written inconsistently, one sec, in the beginning she's wise and loving enough to make the hard decision for him and his people in regards to her father. the next, she's cowering before everyone at the drop of a dime mid and end of the book.

save your money on this one and possibly your credit too.

Great read! Can't wait to read the 2nd book!!!!

The story line keeps you guessing
and entertained. It reminded me of my favorite married to magic novels. Very passionate scenes only wish there more. In my opinion, the story ended too soon, it leaves in a weird place. Can't hardly wait for December for book 2.

Best series opener by Mercedes yet!

I loved this book! It took off right away and never stopped.
If you liked No Man Can Tame by M. Honfleur, you’ll love this one.
It’s different story of course, but the “two different species form an alliance through marriage” thing adds a lot of humor and vulnerability to a budding romance.
This story had more heft, I think, overall than some series I’ve already enjoyed by this author. The main characters especially were unique but also both carried personal burdens. The story itself was more layered, perhaps building for the next books? but the tribulations they go through, plus the underlying sense that something deeper and darker is lurking beneath the troubles they’re already facing, that neither I nor our main characters know…. Well, I guess we’ll find out. I could just be paranoid about those human magic wielders.
I actually felt tense around the middle of the book, worried about what was going to happen and how in the world was our heroine going to get out of the predicament her parents force her into, which is really unusual for me when I’m reading this genre.
I cannot wait for book 2!
The readers on Audible did an excellent job with it as well.
