Publisher's Summary
New York Times best seller
"This chilling mystery is just begging to be read in one sitting." (Cosmopolitan)
Broken features the return of New York Times best-selling author Karin Slaughter’s most compelling characters and introduces memorable new ones in a tale of corruption, murder, and confrontation that will leave more than one life destroyed....
When Special Agent Will Trent arrives in Grant County, he finds a police department determined to protect its own and far too many unanswered questions about a prisoner’s death. He doesn’t understand why Officer Lena Adams is hiding secrets from him. He doesn’t understand her role in the death of Grant County’s popular police chief. He doesn’t understand why that man’s widow, Dr. Sara Linton, needs him now more than ever to help her crack this case
While the police force investigates the murder of a young woman pulled from a frigid lake, Trent investigates the police force, putting pressure on Adams just when she’s already about to crack. Caught between two complicated and determined women, trying to understand Linton’s passionate distrust of Adams, the facts surrounding Chief Tolliver’s death, and the complexities of this insular town, Trent will unleash a case filled with explosive secrets - and encounter a thin blue line that could be murderous if crossed.
Spellbinding and keenly paced, Broken is Karin Slaughter at her best. Here is an unforgettable story of raw emotions, dangerous assumptions, the deadly and layered game of betrayal, and a man’s determination to expose the most painful of human truths - no matter how deeply they’re hidden...or how devastating.

Never Give Up
This re recorded version is great as ms Early brings great continuity to this series. I listened to books 1-4 with different narrators when first released on CD and that just made our Will Trent character jump all over the place so to speak. I can only hope my most scary listen, book one, Triptych, is re recorded by Ms Early. I can hardly remember Will’s role in that book, it was so scary! Ms Early somehow keeps the mystery and thrill without scaring the the daylights out of you. I think it’s her inflection Or emphasis that takes the unknown horror out of a gruesome scene. Thrilled to be getting a re recorded version of this story. I have made the mistake or reading out of order, and now I have to go back and re listen to the 2-5 books to remember which book developed an individual character eg: Lena is in this story and re counts how she met Jared (Jeffery’s son) both characters are in book 7. In this book, Will and Sara begin to build their relationship with the help of Tessa. Author is truly a gifted writer,as she can write present and past when ever she feels like adding more to her Will Trent characters, but one has to have a pretty strong stomach to read straight through the series. I now have to re read in sequence to get the characters built in the order the author intended. Author/publisher have a great series here and I have book 10 pre ordered. Yes, Ms Natalie Ross a great narrator, did a good job on this story but having the same narrator do the whole series is so much better and frankly Ms Early epitomizes Sarah, yummy Will, sarcastic Amanda and Faith to a tee! Plus the new 1.2 speed puts you right there when Will and Faith go through a door guns drawn.
Ms Karin has devoted fans and l think she must read our reviews, thankfully, as we are slowly getting all the series recorded by ms Early.

Will Trent Comes to the Rescue in Grant County!
Broken meshes the two worlds of Will Trent’s world in Atlanta and Sara Linton’s old world in Grant County. It is an uncomfortable story for many reasons, but in particular, as it centers around Detective Lena Adams, the woman Sara blames for causing the death of her husband, Sheriff Jeffrey Tolliver. Sara is visiting her family for the first time in four years when a young woman is found dead in a local lake, the victim of murder. Sara is called upon by the current sheriff to calm the suspect they have in jail and, upon her arrival, finds him dead from suicide. She calls Will to investigate in the hope he will discover Lena negligent.
A lot was going on in this book surrounding the mysterious deaths, but I felt one of the most vital parts of the story was Sara’s anger at Lena and her desire to have her punished. One would think after four years, her anger would have lessened, but if anything, she is more furious than ever. I had mixed feelings about Lena in this book. Not being a fan of hers previously, I felt she was trying to make an honest go of her life, and Sara treated her unfairly.
Although Will wants to be on Sara’s side, his fairness and honesty always lead him to find the truth. He senses something is wrong at the police department, and he is not convinced the fault is with Lena Adams. He must walk a fine line to keep Sara happy yet find the truth.
This story was riveting and suspenseful until the very end. The title was very fitting; it seems there were many broken people in the book, and not much was resolved except solving the murders. I listened to this on audiobook via Audible with the excellent narrator Kathleen Early. I gave it five stars.

Awesome As Always!
I just Love Karin Slaughter! I love the way she writes; her story plots and her characters. They are 3-D and totally fleshed out. Her characters are human. They have flaws at times quite glaring and you want to climb into the story sometimes and smack them in the head. I love crime stories and I love to be kept guessing. Ms. Slaughter is very good at this and only at the last few chapters do you finally get the full picture of the puzzle.
The narration was also REALLY GOOD! I love that it is the same consistent narrator since Will Trent came on the scene. Kathleen Early has become a favorite of mine and one I hope I keep hearing give life to people of Grant County!

not as good as the precious ones
this story fell short of the earlier ones in the series. too much dialog that meant nothing to the story or character development
