Story
At only 32, Bishop Stockley has lived a hard-knock life. After doing five years in a federal prison, Bishop is back at his dad's trailer and working for his landscaping company, thrust into a legit world where he's no longer the alpha - a world where a criminal record is the least of his disadvantages, because Bishop can't read or write. Bishop already had the deck stacked against him, but he wasn't afraid of hard work to change his situation. Especially after he encountered Edison Scala, a kind-spirited office manager who didn't hesitate to come to his defense...

"Look out for Zach, and don't hit on him." My brother's request sounds easy enough. Keep an eye out for his best friend on campus and keep my hands to myself. Easy. Even if Zach is a quintessential nerd, who I've always thought was cute, I don't have the time to think with my...stick. There's only one stick I should be focused on this year, and that's my hockey stick. My goal once I graduate is to get an NHL contract. The last thing I need is a distraction. On or off the ice. Only, keeping to the rules is harder than I thought it would be.

I don’t want Jason Vega. Not at all. It’s the worst idea ever. Ah, hell... Jason is handsome. Smart. Dangerous. Hot. He’s goddamn gorgeous - but he’s also sleeping on the street, hanging out with the local biker gang, and selling his body for a living. Our lives, our paths, couldn’t be further apart. I’m crawling toward the light while he’s falling into the dark. But it doesn’t matter how different we are or what logic dictates.

It started out as a little fun. When there was a man in my building on a hookup app, why not message him? Only we didn’t meet. We just texted - one night after the other, after the other. GoodWithHisHands was the perfect escape from my life, where pressure was always on my shoulders: my father’s expectations, the worry about my sister, Maddy, getting sick again, and her ex-husband, Ryder Lynwood, suddenly back and volunteering at the same hospital as me. I like talking to him, the same way I enjoy chatting with GoodWithHisHands. They weren’t supposed to be the same person.

My new stepbrother is insufferable. You'd think it wouldn't matter since I won't be here for long, but this guy gets under my skin like no one ever has. All-American, baby-faced, blue-eyed band dork and star soccer player. Everything about him is the picture of perfection—unlike me. I don't think Do Gooder knows I'm starting senior year late. The job at Sunday Orchard was supposed to be temporary. A chance to gain some work experience, to have some fun. I had not expected to be welcomed into a family of gorgeous and weirdly efficient lumberjack-types, or to find purpose in the tiny Vermont town whose claim to fame seemed to be apple-based products and copious amounts of charm. And I most definitely hadn’t expected to fall for Knox Sunday, my grumpy, burly, fifteen-years-older, reluctant roommate, with his infuriating lectures, his hot-as-fire body, his superior attitude - I’ve never been one to put down roots.

Publisher's Summary
When Theodore Davenport decides to switch his mundane job for a career, he walks into Holden House Publishing with enthusiasm and determination to succeed. As he settles into his new role, makes new friends, and dreams of making it to the top, everything is going to plan. Until he meets James Holden, CEO of Holden House. James Holden hasn't been able to stop thinking about his encounter with the timid man he met in a club bathroom last week, and when he discovers the one haunting his dreams is an employee, he can't seem to stop himself from pursuing him. Just a little fun - that's what James tells himself. He can't afford to care for someone who can never reciprocate, not once they find out who he really is. James believes nobody deserves the burden of being attached to him. He's a complicated man. Damaged. Difficult. Demanding. Broken. Is Theodore strong enough to confront James' demons? More importantly, is James?
M/M romance. Not suitable for listeners under 18 years of age due to language and sexual content.
Please note: This book contains scenes of self-harm, mental illness, and suicidal ideation which may be uncomfortable for some listeners.

I am absolutely gutted by this book.
Being bipolar myself, this story really resonated with me. Though I did get a few chuckles out of it, there were times I was just sobbing. It's not an easy listen. Despite that, I loved this story because it didn't whitewash anything. Severe mental illness is a challenge for so many people. I hope Broken will let people truly understand who haven't been around it before. I can totally identify with James's statements about being a good liar and a good actor who can hide his feelings of depression from everyone.
I really loved and adored both James and Theo. I loved how Theo really stood by James and supported him in getting better. I also liked the supporting characters. Well, maybe except for Mike. 😉
I haven't read this book myself yet, just listened to it. I rave about Joel Leslie every time I listen to a book he's narrated. This one though. OMG. the depth of emotion he is able to express just with his voice blows me away. I can't just give him 5 stars for this one. I also need to add in the sun and the moon. And maybe even the whole galaxy. I don't know how he managed to get through this book and remain in such good control.
Without a doubt, this book will go right into my top 10 of all time.

If you’re broken, can you be put back together?
Can a book break your heart and still have a happy ending?
I have listened to 2 books recently that did exactly that. I listen to several books a week, so for me to be so profoundly affected says something about the power of the stories and the talent of the authors.
This book is not for the faint of heart. James Holden is broken. Anyone who has been broken or loved someone who is broken will recognize themselves or their loved ones.
It is raw and it is real and this is the way I love my books.
Low-angst feel-good books are nice, and I do enjoy them, but it’s the books that push me emotionally – that makes me go to unpleasant and rough places – that have the greatest impact on me. They stay with me the longest, have the most profound impact. I listened to this book 3 weeks ago and it has taken me this long to put down words – hopefully the right words.
This is a tough book emotionally. It ventures into very dark places. The promise of a happy ending might not be enough for some listeners, but it is worth the ten hours of your time.
Theodore Davenport has decided he needs to go after his dream. Publishing is where he’s always wanted to be and when the opportunity presents itself, he leaps.
No quickie in the bathroom of a bar is going to interfere with his plans. But that clichéd quickie leads him where he never pictured himself going. James Holden has a lot of responsibilities – more than one person can really handle. With a legacy to continue and a mother who is impossible to please, it’s no wonder he’s buckling under the strain. Watching the downward spiral, however, is just plain painful.
There is a moment of bleakness that had tears streaming down my face and a band around my chest. It’s a wonder my fellow train passengers didn’t think I was crazy. Or maybe they did – I just didn’t care.
At times I felt like I was the one who was broken, bringing back painful memories from my past. But I knew there was hope because when two men love each other as much as Theo and James do, everything is possible.
Also, anything narrated by Joel Leslie should be on auto-buy. He exceeds his normally stellar work with this book because his accents were spot-on. A great listen.

Broken but not Beaten
What did you love best about Broken?
The story is good. The book is even better due to its exploration of how people and families live with mental illness.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Broken?
Not that I liked what she said, but James' mother portrays many people's opinions when she lectures James during his hospitalization.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Joel Leslie?
I listen to Joel Leslie's books often. I find his voice whiny but he tells the story well.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It made me proud of both Theodore & James.

Great book.
The mental illness depicted in this book is raw. An honest portrayal of how two men in love deal with the challenges of bipolar disorder.

Melancholy and tears with a smile
This book made me laugh and cry. While I listened to it, the narrator brilliantly and perfectly brought these characters to life. As a person that suffers with mental illness, the content in this book was all to familiar. Sometimes there are no happy endings to mental illness as this book explains in detail, however with love and hard work things can change... for the better. I enjoyed listening to Mr. Leslie's accented deep voice. It was hypnotic at times and I was fascinated at how his voice was able to juggle so many characters on demand as the story progressed. Love it.

Tissues ready
What made the experience of listening to Broken the most enjoyable?
I have read this book before, but not listened until now, You get to feel each character feelings. I cried, I laugh I felt every emotion, outstanding
Which character – as performed by Joel Leslie – was your favourite?
James Joel put so much emotion into how James was feeling, utter draining. Just outstanding, you felt what the MCs feeling we're at each turning,
Any additional comments?
Joel Lelie once again was brilliant, for such a deep book, it is written so very well. I like the concept that you saw each other's feelings the dispares and the highs

I recommend
I enjoyed this book. the emotional description of self harm, bipolar and recovery really struck a chord for me. the pacing of 'enemies' to friends to lovers could blhave been be better bit it still felt natural enough to maintain immersion.
I would recommend this to both friends/partners of people with depression/bipolar as well as the people with the condition ( providing this is not too distressing or triggering)

Very moving
A great description of the way depression can affect not only the sufferer but also family and loved ones. I thought the narrator’s accent was not quite right and slightly Americanised with ‘genuine’ mispronounced and ‘counter ‘ used instead of the English ‘work top’. But altogether a great book and will listen again.

This book has quickly became one of my all one favourite books. The story and both characters to me is a prefect representation of myself, and I can connect to be characters, with James being my bad demons and Theo being my angel. I loved every second, whether that be making me cry or making me laugh, I cannot wait to listen to again.

Oh wow!! If you have read the book, then I would say get the audio too, it is one of the most incredible audios I have listened to this year - be warned, you will need tissues with this one, even more so than you would have done reading the book.
James is a deeply troubled man, very complicated and to most people hard to understand. He is a confident man at work at Holden House, but it seems to be personally he has big issues, but he has learnt to hid this side of himself from everyone, especially his family. He actually comes across as believing that he is unloveable, that nobody should have to deal with him and his issues, they are his and his alone. I think a lot of this relates to how he was treated during his childhood - I have to say here, that I really wanted to reach into the audio and slap his mother!!
However, along comes Theodore, and he seems to see right through the facade that James puts up to keep people away. It wasn't the usual way to meet someone - they met in a club bathroom - but neither of them could forget the encounter, and you think the more they meet they are doing ok.
One major thing though, is that James is keeping things from Theodore, and the repercussions are devestating..... (so hard to try and cook dinner while sobbing at the audio you are listening to! Lol). Will Theodore stand by James, or will he just walk away, which is what James believes everyone should do with him..
This has got to be the most emotional audio I have ever listened to, and it is all there - Joel Leslie has totally excelled himself on this one, I honestly didn't think it would be as good as the book, but I was proved wrong big time, and I applaud Joel on his abilities to get the emotional distress through on here.
Reviewed at the request of the narrator.

Absolutely stunning
Would you consider the audio edition of Broken to be better than the print version?
I read the book and I absolutely loved it, but this audio version .... wow. It blew me away with how much emotion was put into the narration and it was utterly believable - this is a book you live when you listen to it and it's absolutely impossible not to get swept along with what Theo and James go through.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Broken?
It's hard to say without giving it away, but there's a turning point in the book and I was so engrossed in the scene it had me in tears for both characters.
What does Joel Leslie bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
I have listened to and loved other books narrated by JL, but he absolutely outperforms any other audio with this one. Yes, it's a great book, but the his narration totally nails each emotion, each character, each voice, so it's like listening to a superbly acted film without the (visible) pictures.

Blown away
Yes I’m blown away by this beautiful and wonderful story by Ms Haken. She has given me a small understanding ( I knew nothing previously) of what people with this illness suffer.
I enjoyed this book immensely and would recommend highly , I will be looking for more of Ms Haken’s books, as for narration - Joel Leslie has been a favourite of mine for a long time , but this book? Omg he made me laugh, cry and slap my hand to my mouth in surprise and sadness ( you’ll know what I mean when you read it ) what a talented performer he is ! Thanks to both of you.

A 5 Stars Plus story
🎧 narrated by Joel Leslie 💖 If a book comes to life it would be this narrator who does a wonderful job. Brilliantly told and was a first time read for this author and I absolutely loved it. This includes :
Brilliant narrator, fantastic voices, laugh-out loud moments, Bi-polar, deep emotions, secrets, fated couple, a really powerful subject, lots of feels, graphic suicide attempt scene that's not easy to read.
Theo 27 yrs starts a new job in a publishing house. On a night out with work colleagues Theo has a hot encounter in a bathroom he'll never forget.
James 26 yrs is the new manager of the house.. Lady Fate plays with her ball..lol

This book, especially narrated by Joel Leslie, showed how mental illness can be so debilitating but with love and compassion from those around you and seeking professional help is vital. Loved this book.

Loved the book. LOVE the audio
Would you consider the audio edition of Broken to be better than the print version?
This has been a standout book for me for a couple of years now. The audio was a great way to reconnect with this story.
Any additional comments?
Not going to lie, Joel Leslie's accent did take me a while to get in to, but after a chapter I didn't even notice it.
