The ancient magic of wizards was anything but dark. It was the enlightenment that lifted humanity from the squalor of superstition, and the worship of fell spirits and capricious gods, but those days are gone. The shining glory of the sorcerers burned away the subtlety of wisdom, replacing it with easy power, held only in the hands of the elite - a new age built upon the elemental supremacy of aristocrats and the ignorance of the masses.

Minalan gave up a promising career as a professional warmage to live the quiet life of a village spellmonger in the remote mountain valley of Boval. It was a peaceful, beautiful little fief, far from the dangerous feudal petty squabbles of the Five Duchies, on the world of Callidore. There were cows. Lots of cows. And cheese. For six months things went well: He found a quaint little shop, he befriended the local lord, the village folk loved him, he found a sharp young apprentice to help out, and, best yet, he met a comely young widow with the prettiest eyes.

Carl was a regular construction foreman. Not the worst, not the best, and definitely not the thinnest. Even so, he didn't deserve that heart attack! He really didn't deserve being reborn into a dog-eat-dog world as a dragon. To be fair, it’s nice to be at the top of the food chain. Now Carl just needs to learn how magic works, which monsters are safe to eat, and why his hoard is so important to him. Dealing with change is hard enough, but he has enemy dragons incoming, hostile environments, and foes constantly trying to get bragging rights by taking down a dragon.

Alec began his 18th birthday with the temple monks. By day's end, he discovers he possesses magical abilities. Except his magic is unique. He doesn't require grimoires and incantations to cast spells. Alec's magic is entirely natural. He can, somehow, absorb the elements from objects and manipulate them according to his will. This power is incredible, but difficult to master. If he's going to learn how to use his natural magic, it'll take the tutelage of Archmage Diamondspear, one of the most adept magic users in the kingdom.

What a waste
I went past struggling to finish it, straight to struggling not to demand a refund.
This was EXTREMELY BORING with a capital B.
So dry and full of emotional nonsense with out any true story progression.
Sadly I know people will still buy this book thinking I'm hating or misunderstanding greatness and waste a good credit or money on this travesty.
I at least warned u lol.

If "the audacity!" was a book.
I couldn't do it. I made it around 10 hours and I thought.... AGAIN!? This book is 10% plot, and 90% let's see what insignificant thing the Prince will have to get over next.
I did enjoy the intricacies of dealing with a cultural transition, but I just couldn't. I knew it was going to go on for another 10 hours and I gave up.
So if you like that kind of discussion and watching a character slowly get over himself, listen to this book.

Great series!
Excellent series with some very unique ideas (rare for sci fi these days!). I can't wait to listen to the others.
This narrator is my absolute favourite and I'll listen to anything by him! His ability to do different voices is astounding (even women, which is hard for most men!). The characters in this book particularly show up his talent. Truly awestruck by his performance every time!

Long, a little tedious, but surprisingly enjoyable
I enjoyed this book. I thought I would say this first in case my comments below put people off!
It had an interesting and exciting start but then plateaued and became quite tedious to listen to, however I decided to 'press on' for a bit longer instead of returning it and found myself quite enjoying it enough to go on to Book 2.
I wasn't at all surprised to learn that the author is a psychologist, as the regular delving into and explaining of, the feelings of her main character gave her away!
The narrator's voice was rich and his use of accents interesting, so it came as a total surprise to hear the mispronunciation of the word 'grimace' as 'grim-ACED'. The first time, it jarred me out of listening and I rewound to listen again....I didn't quite catch what on earth he was saying. It became a source of irritation and unfortunately highlighted how frequently the word was used.
I do hope Ms Ealey develops her use of synonyms rather than overusing certain words repeatedly, but I am still in awe of anyone who can write such a long and epic novel irrespective of those, hopefully, constructive comments.

Rather average for me.
Honestly I've read a few epic fantasy novels from women and so far I've only really loved one series. This one had the same flaw for me in that it was very dull for a lot of it. The main character is supposed to be the Guardian of the Forest, a character that comes around every few hundred years to protect the forest and it's inhabitants whenever a large danger threatens them. After a whole book we still don't get any real idea of what that danger is, and what little there is in the book was hardly world ending.
What really annoyed me though was the main character. To be frank I felt his actions and responses felt more like I'd expect a woman to react than a man. I also got very bored of his hissy fits and expecting everyone to give him respect, trust and loyalty after knowing him a few days, when they have very good cause to feel the opposite.
The story is okay I guess if it turns out this book is just setting the next books in the series, but it could have used more action at times to help break up all the blah, blah, blah conversation, whining and self pity. In short I found it readable, but average on the whole.

i just couldnt finnish
info dumps, lazy tropes and poor pace make this a dull and boring book. please dont bother, the main chrt is so conflicted, depressed / emo. he is also just but tyranical fair but harsh. he is a teenager as a main plot point and has all the anoying foibles . to sum up. prince is cast as a savior and has to stalin his way into the comunist tree folk. just a poor story
