Publisher's Summary

Read by the author.

New York Times best-selling author Dave Hollis knows what it feels like to realize you’ve been sailing off of someone else’s map. He has taken control of his life and future, and he’s ready to share the lessons he learned along the way with people who are facing similar struggles.

Dave Hollis was recently confronted with the fact that he was living the life someone else wanted for him. After weathering a highly publicized personal crisis amid the backdrop of an international pandemic and navigating the enjoyable but unpredictable waters of being a single father to four kids, he has been forced to become the captain of his own life and is ready to teach others how to do the same.

Built for Courage will help you:

  • Dive deeper into the stories, values, and beliefs you attach yourself to and decide once and for all if they have credibility or if it’s time to cut bait.
  • Incorporate fundamental habits and routines specific to you and your circumstances that will flood your daily life with consistency, flexibility, simplicity, and integrity.
  • Identify and, if necessary, adjust your goals to ensure they are clear, don’t belong to other people, and are not contingent on immediate results.
  • Accept failure as the richest source of intelligence and help you reframe it as a requirement for your own progress and growth.
  • Much, much more.

Built for Courage gleans wisdom from sources vast and wide, as well as from the life experiences of Dave himself, to get you to the place you’re meant to go and become who you are meant to be, regardless of any anchor holding you back.

Not relatable

Dave’s story of navigating choppy waters, storms, etc. is set against the backdrop of elitist-level privilege. Leaving a high level/well-paid executive role to work in a start-up to basically flopping around trying to decide what to do next all while facing zero hardships & minimal challenges is just not relatable. Divorce is hard, but having all of the free time & financial stability to immerse oneself in therapy as much as one wants & reflecting upon life whilst lounging on a million-dollar patio of peace is not relatable.

Sorry Dave, I was really hoping that this would be insightful, but you have truly missed the mark. I no longer believe that PD is for you. If you continue on in the PD world…..do better.

Wished for more…

I do not see myself in your stories.
Unlike you- I have actually had to struggle. I had an alcoholic father, have been down to $2 in my bank account and I have Metastatic Breast Cancer.
I don’t call celebrities and I’ve never been in a movie.
Get out there and actually struggle- really do the work. Then- your stories will resonate.

Returning

I purchased Dave’s audiobook pre-release but was disappointed right after the book’s release to hear that he repeatedly told his Instagram followers to unfollow him if they were not willing/able to buy the book as it was some kind of “breech of contract.” His narcissistic, lack of compassion attitude is not any sort of “courage” I’m looking to emulate. Additionally, I had already listened to the first couple pages and was immediately put off by Dave’s narration which was very disconnected. It was clear he was just reading without connecting to the words he was speaking. I have unfollowed Dave and his inflated ego on Instagram and am returning the audiobook now. So disappointed.

Tone deaf word salad

I drank the Hollis kool-aid and have followed Dave and his ex for years. However, Dave is right when he claims to have changed, but it definitely hasn’t been for the better. I wanted to like this book, and I tried VERY hard to keep an open mind, despite the overused ship metaphors. I had an advanced reader copy, and frankly, this book is awful. I believe Dave’s intentions were good, but he missed the mark. Leaving a multi-million dollar salary at Disney and going through a divorce aren’t enough to categorize Dave as courageous. You can save the $20 and watch his Instagram stories for 3-4 days to hear the same anecdotes and “lessons” for free. You’ll even get some discount codes for meat sticks and teeth whitener, making it a better deal.

In addition to its lack of relatable substance, this book desperately needed an editor. The incoherent run-on sentences make it a tough read, and it isn’t worth the mental gymnastics required to get through it. Sorry, Captain, this book is lost at sea. Let’s not go, shall we?

Note: I read the entire book as an advanced reader copy on NetGalley AND bought the book on Audible. I was asked to give an honest review as part of the launch team, which I did, and my review was written after reading the entire book and not just the first 50 pages.

This book was really good until he got political at the end

Boo to reverse sexism and reverse racism. That turned my view of the overall rating of this book.

I love Dave but the book falls short

This book is an accumulation of all the books he’s ever found helpful plus life experience plus way too many boat references minus the deeper work and the crummy parts that go with life journeys. I wish he would provide some deeper insight to make his suggestions more meaningful to the process of “leaving the harbor.” It’s very repetitive and although I love most of the work Dave does, this book is not one to remember.

Built Through Courage

I read this book in a day! I loved all the activities that went along with the stories. His ability to be real and make stories that apply to my life (even though I don’t work in a field he does/has). This book is not complicated to follow or to apply. Worth the read!

Outstanding

Built through courage aligns perfectly with the teachings and values of Dave Hollis. This book is for those who are ready to take control of life.
Dave talks through life experience and embracing the choppy waters of life and how we can map a path to get through these times and come out the other side with an even greater perspective and a more fulfilled life. It's honest and inspiring. A brilliant read.
