Story
When a cunning enemy enslaves the kingdom, a famed warlock-knight must survive a gauntlet of perils to save his people. Augum Stone is only 16 and already a legend. He heard his name chanted in the arena by tens of thousands. He vanquished a notorious tyrant and ended a war. And he revived a warlock-knight order that lay dormant for generations. But these feats came with a price - he needs combat to feel alive, to test his limits. As Augum struggles with restraint, a callous enemy kingdom enslaves his people. And that enemy wants more than mere control.

Story
Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King's Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert's name. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse - unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season. Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances....

Publisher's Summary
When a young man chooses a forbidden calling, he must prove his worth...or watch his kingdom fall.
Sixteen-year-old Augum Stone is a warlock prodigy suffocating under the weight of expectations. Students idolize him. Nobles plot to exploit him. Commoners think he's a miracle-maker. And with invasion looming, his already war-weakened kingdom expects him to be its champion. But Augum doesn't want to be a pawn in someone else's game. He'll forge his own path: that of the Arcaner - not a warlock or a knight, but a lethal combination of both.
Legend says Arcaners once had the power to summon dragons. If true, it could change everything. Resurrecting the Arcaner path comes with consequences, however. Scandal. Malice. Treachery. And a harrowing test of character. He must survive. He must prove he's worthy of an ancient path. And he must save the kingdom...before it's too late.

While story is still great, change in narrator is a shame
The story of Augum Stone continues and takes new twists and turns in this series. However, the change in narrator is unfortunate. Stefan Rudnicki, while not the perfect narrator, did an excellent job of giving different voices to the various characters. His deep and heavy base voice that he gave to make characters contrasted well with the lighter and more whispey voices he gave to female characters. While they were all recognizable as Rudnicki due to the distinct timbre/quality of his voice, he actually displayed a wide range of voices for the different characters. Meanwhile, the new narrator here, while maybe a more appropriate accent for medieval narration, just doesn’t hold a candle. The different characters all sound extremely similar, and somehow the female characters are given deeper and more masculine sounding voices when compared to Rudnicki (who has a much deeper base speaking voice). The range in intensity is also lacking. Despite the situation, narration of events is still deadpan, which contrasted with Rudnickis lively narration. I gave this first audiobook in the series a try, but I may just have to get the readable versions for the rest of it as the narrator just doesn’t cut it for me. It’s probably too much to ask for, but if we could have Rudnicki back as narrator it would be amazing.

Love the story...hate when they change narrators
Love this series but the one thing that drives me crazy is when a different narrator is used and they pronounce things differently. Doesn’t change the content of the book but it makes me stop every time something is different from the precious narrator.

Disappointed in narrator change
While Gary Furlong overall is not a bad narrator, the change from the original Arinthian Line series narrator, Stefan Rudnicki, was disappointing. Furlong pronounces some key words differently than Rudnicki that was so hard to ignore. Also Furlong gave very monotone fight scenes that was so saddening because the epic duals and fight for survival is part of what makes the series so heart stopping and page turning (metaphorically). The BIGGEST issue I had at first was now all the characters have completely different accents!!!!! Part of why I fell in love with the characters, especially the supporting ones, was from the way Rudnicki made each individual character have unique way of speaking. Emphasis on certain words and tones conveying their emotions. Furlong completely changed it and it made it hard for me to even recognize some of the iconic characters from the Arinthian Line books. I want to say again, Furlong is a good narrator, I just want Rudnicki back.

Bring back Stephen Rudnicki
If not for the awful narration unfortunately provided for this book it would be another masterpiece work from the author. Yet as with the other rising dragon books, it feels as if your being told the story from a sniveling British snob that didn’t care enough for the books to listen to pronunciation of names, city’s, or spells established in the author’s previous books. For the love of all that is holy please have these books revoiced by Stephen.

A series of unfortunate events
The main character is supposed to be a war hero but in truth rarely acts with enough back bone to be consider one. in fact he is supposed to be some big shot but let's every one walk all over him. Neither is this a trait that's supposed to be worked out over a character ark as there really isn't any.
As an example a cult leader in his province has a women whipped and is planing to hang another for practiseing Arcanari not only does he not do anything but allows the cult leader to openly challenge him in front of a crowd bu calling him a devil worshipper.
He also allows a headmaster of a school to whip him. He allows a tabloid to publish a article on him that actively gets people to try and assassinate him. This all happens the day after every one in his country trys to crown him king as in he has the influence and power that they consider just giving him the country but the day after he is a scared school boy who every one bullies for... saving them from a evil necromancer.
yeah the author needs to work on his story instead of just having a series of unfortunate events happen that don't even make sense with what the author wrote less than a couple chapters ago. Also I really dislike push over charectors. I read to escape from reality not become even more depressed.

Great Story but I messed up
this was a very good story, however i failed to realise that there is a full story line of books prior to these one. the author does a good job of bringing you upto speed if you havent read the prior series and it is not difficult to follow.
some of the writing is very whimsical and you can tell that the other has taken inspirations from Harry Potter, mainly through some characters personalities i found.
the narrator also does a very good job with the voices and makes it easy to differentiate between the characters.
a very good series which i continued with straight away after i fininshed this book.
