Story
When a simple "find and fetch" case throws Private Investigator Twig Starfig and newly minted wizard Quinn Broomsparkle into the middle of an EBI murder investigation, it’s just another day in the Elder Realm. If murder were Twig’s only problem, he’d be the luckiest half-dragon in the land. Murder he can handle. Fulfilling his promise to his scheming, power-hungry father to run for a seat on Lighthelm’s city council? Meh, he’d rather face a demon with a toothache.

Story
My whole life, I’ve been taught to despise shifters. So when I’m hired to track two escaped convicts, I’m suddenly thrust into the world I hate - or thought I did. Yet I’m inexplicably drawn to the alpha of the pack, whose land the convicts may be hiding on. He’s different than any shifter I've ever met - laidback and quick to laugh, caring, and protective. As secrets are revealed, I start to wonder if everything I’ve been raised to believe was a lie, though it may not matter, because it seems like someone wants us dead.

Smart men never dabble with demons. I never claimed to be smart, but at least, I’m powerful enough to control them. When I bound Havoc to me nearly 300 years ago, I never realized how difficult he’d make my life, although “accidentally” lighting him on fire every now and then does bring a smile to my face. Havoc is handsome, mysterious, and somehow, my closest companion, even if we don’t always get along.

“You are the savior of mankind” are the last words I ever expected to hear while nibbling on fries. The thing is, I’m not mankind saving material. I don’t even have magic (and just found out it exists). I’m the most boring, normal(ish) human ever. Suddenly, I’m being tossed right into the middle of a fight that started years before I was even born, and then I get partnered up with Alastair, a quirky magical Guardian. He is rather attractive and sweet when he’s not into the whole “woe is me, I can’t let myself fall in love with you” nonsense.

After half a century of chaos, my retirement from leading the Community of Species Government has been bliss. No more hellhounds playing pranks. No more snippy demons demanding my attention. No more cajoling money from the wealthy to support the community. Just peace while I avoid my overbearing father and try to work out my next steps. Although...maybe three years of peace is enough. It might even be starting to get boring. In fact, an adolescent dragon crash-landing on my landlord's shed is just the kind of excitement I need - especially when he brings his species leader to my door.

Fell in love with these characters all over again
- By Cayce on 03-14-14
Publisher's Summary
The last thing half-dragon, half-fairy private investigator Twig Starfig wants to do is retrieve a stolen enchanted horn from a treacherous fae, but there's no denying the dazzlingly gorgeous unicorn who asks Twig to do just that. Literally, no denying, because compelling the reluctant detective is all part of a unicorn's seductive magic.
To add to his woes, Twig is saddled with the unicorn's cheeky indentured servant, Quinn Broomsparkle. Dragons are supposed to want to eat humans, but Twig's half-dragon side only wants to gobble up Quinn in a more personal way. Making matters worse, it's obvious the smokin' hot but untrustworthy sidekick is hiding something. Something big. And not what's in his trousers. In the PI business, that means trouble with a capital Q.
Throw in gads of zombies, a creepy ghost pirate ship, a malfunctioning magic carpet, and Twig's overbearing fairy father's demands to live up to the illustrious Starfig name. Naturally, an old but abiding enemy chooses this time to resurface, too. Those inconveniences Twig can handle. The realization he's falling for a human who isn't free to return his affections and whose life may hang on the success of his latest case?
Not so much.

That was...weird. Fun, but weird.
This was...well, I already said weird, didn't I? I feel like the story can't really decide if it wants to be whimsical or serious. It was kind of like a children's book, except the characters had sex.
If you want a gritty urban fantasy detective story, this isn't the book for you. If you want a slightly surreal road trip with ghost parrots, tea drinking giants, zombie armies and tiny fairy politicians, then this is definitely the book you're looking for. It was an entertaining enough listen with a competent reader and a very satisfying end.
A word of warning: there are allusions to a character having been raped in the past, as well as the overhanging threat of him being raped again. There is also some sexual mind control happening.

Whimsical, A Bit Too Fairy, But Fun
The 'rainbows and sparkles' and totally gay names were a bit over the top for me. Once I got passed that distraction, I enjoyed the story. It was creative, whimsical and fun.

Excellent!
I loved the book, but the narration took this to another level! This is such a great story that I didn't think could get any better. Greg Tremblay proved me wrong. For me, he made it perfect. I loved every minute of listening (even going over parts). I believed in every character, and he managed to knock Twig from being my favourite- now Bill 😈is my favourite character. I really hope if this becomes a series Bill gets his own story, but NOT with the odious Bransome 😠
An excellent performance!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book!!
After reading some of the reviews I had mixed feelings about the book. But knowing the narrator I was sure that I would enjoy it. I did very much. In another review someone said they thought that the names of the characters were a little strange. Well it is fantasy so you’re talking about fairies and dragons and wizards so it’s part of the charm of the book. This book made me laugh and made me a little sad and gave me a little hope for love. The adventures were great the storyline was great and as I said above I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I had a very long drive ahead of me today, so started about an hour in and as I climbed into my hotel bed, finished the book. 👍🏻👍🏻
I always Enjoy Greg’s narrations! He brings the characters to life!

A pleasant surprise
I can confirm that this is an m/m story and despite the description making it sound like a dark-bdsm/slave romance (which kept me from getting it at first) it is actually the opposite; and even though there are a couple sex scenes, that is not the focus of the book.
This book can be summarized as: an m/m fantasy version of the Dresden Files (except, the main character is "Not" a wizard).
I LOVE IT.

I did enjoy this book, and the silliness of it was part of what I liked, however I wish the romance was a bit more fleshed out. I didn't like how they were fighting over stuff that could have been easily resolved by talking. Narration excellent though, as always 👌

I can't quite find the right words to describe this one. All in all I really enjoyed this one. If you are not a fan of the m/m slave trope. This is not for you! However there are no consent issues between Quinn and Twig as they are rather sweet with each other.

Amazing
Hands up this was one of the BEST listens of the year. I haven't laughed so much at a book in a long time. The story is fast paced, the characters are witty and the feel of the book is so good. But what topped it off was Greg Boudreaux. His narration was just fantastic, a massive array of voices, intimations spot on and he did all of the extras that many narrators miss, he sighed and laughed and shouted and well, he does a stand up job. If you want a funny feel good love story this is it.

Good fun
This was a light fun read with lots of fantastic spark, snark and warmth. I really liked Twig! He was a grump with a huge heart and I have a soft spot for those :-) There is a lot of fun side caracters that I look forward to reading more about in the next book.
My one hang-up was that a lot of trouble could have been awoided if Twig and Quinn would have just talked. Just sat down and talked instead of always assuming that they knew best. I know that this is to drive the plot along I’m just nok a fan.
Gregs narration is as always spot on. He is so good at differentiating the different voices that you are never in doubt about who is saying what. Always a mayor plus when he is the narrator!
Overall well worth a credit :-)

Thoroughly enjoyed and can’t wait to hear more from Starfig Investigations!

I just loved the story and the humour in this book. The characters were great, as was the storyline and the narrator was excellent and made the story come alive.

MM romance in fantasy setting with wonderful characters and a warm sense of humour. Do yourself a favour and get it. Laughing out loud, even on my third listen. Fantastic narrator who makes it all come alive.

So much fun!
Who would ever have thought that unicorns could be narcissistic jerks?
Although I'd really like to use much stronger language to describe Brandsome (the unicorn), he truly was a cruel and ugly creature below the surface.
I'm definitely on a Meghan Maslow kick right now, I haven't yet read anything of hers that I haven't enjoyed, and when she teams up with Greg Boudreaux you know it's a sure fire winner!
I've been a fan of the fantasy genre in its many forms since I was a teen, and the style used in this series bridges the gap between high/epic and urban fantasy, combining elements of both. The result is a true escapist read that like high fantasy transports you completely to a world that is nothing like our reality, but has the lighter elements of snarky humour and romance that is common in urban styles. Regardless of any literary analysis, By Fairy Means or Foul is just plain fun to read/listen.
I didn't recognise many of the problems with Twig's character that have been identified elsewhere. Instead, I found him to be a complex character that as a result of his own experiences made a lot of incorrect assumptions about those he encountered. His own relationships made him quite cynical and it almost seemed like he had switched off, to a large degree, his capacity for empathy, and even his emotions as a whole. As the story progressed, Twig's emotional capacity grew as he started experiencing the world from another perspective, largely due to Quinn's persistence and innate goodness. That doesn't mean he didn't act like a total jerk at times, that was almost his default, but the fact that he recognised (even if after the fact) that he was acting that way was certainly emotional growth.
It's no secret that I'm a fan of Greg Boudreaux's narration work, and his voices and inflections gave an extra emotive element to the story, as well as an extra snap to the witty repartee between the characters, Plus there aren't many out there that could credibly voice a pirate parrot ghost!
By Fairy Means or Foul was an amazing experience to read and listen to (via Kindle's Whispersync); it ticked all my boxes, and I loved every moment.

Adventure, romance and mayhem in the search for the unicorn’s horn!
Twig Starfig is a PI with an inferiority complex, and boy is it complex! With a dragon mother and fairy father, he’s way too big to be a dainty fairy and too small to be a bona fide dragon - plus he can only half shift. When unicorn svengali Brandsome Nightwind asks Twig to retrieve his magical horn, the evil unicorn offers his unwilling but gorgeous servant, Quinn Broomsparkle, as collateral. Over the course of the assignment, Twig and Quinn grow close. Meghan Maslow has written an entertaining adult fairy tale with fun characters, thrilling adventure, and interesting world building. There’s tongue-in-cheek action and danger mixed with passion and humour. I didn’t immediately warm to the two leads, but they were completely overwhelmed by the evil unicorn from the start and they really grew on me over time as they sorted themselves out. Audio narrator Greg Boudreaux really went above and beyond with the characters and voices, especially the ghostly pirate’s parrot! I’m keen to listen to the other books in the series.

Easy to Listen
I really enjoyed this light and easy to listen audio book. The story was entertaining and very well read (each character has its own voice).
