Story
The modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.

Narrator Dan Stevens ( Downton Abbey) presents an uncanny performance of Mary Shelley's timeless gothic novel, an epic battle between man and monster at its greatest literary pitch. In trying to create life, the young student Victor Frankenstein unleashes forces beyond his control, setting into motion a long and tragic chain of events that brings Victor to the very brink of madness. How he tries to destroy his creation, as it destroys everything Victor loves, is a powerful story of love, friendship, scientific hubris, and horror.

Great Narrators. Ok story
The story was ok. It's definitely dated. I really didn't enjoy the story till chapter 3 when the truth came out and the hunt began.
The narrators and sound effects were great though. Each character was a different narrator which really helped bring the story to life. Overall, I am glad I listened to it but I didn't love it.

Darkly atmospheric
Rose Leslie is delightful to listen to. She is the best thing about this performance. Carmilla is dark, atmospheric, gothic... but too predictable to be scary. I wasn't familiar with the novella but I read that it was one of Bram Stoker's inspirations for Dracula. So I may have found it so predictable because of similarities with Dracula. Three stars for the story; five stars for the performance; four stars overall.

Tremendous production, fantastic in its delivery!!
My personal favorite audiobook and I constantly listen to them while driving over an hour to college each way. Such a five star quality performance it makes me want to change my previous five star ratings. Never before have I taken such time in enjoying a book. I listened to each of the three chapters many times over and over, not because I had to but because I truly wanted to savor the performances.
The acting is engaging and of the highest caliber. The writing is of the finest literature quality and I am an English major. This one cones with any sort of the most high praise to purchase and enjoy again and again. Do yourself a favor and purchase the ticket, sit in a quiet room if you can, and allow the sounds and words to bathe you in delight.

Excellent Vampire Story
Any additional comments?
I didn't read the story, but I don't imagine it could be as engaging as this dramatization. The acting and theatricality were perfectly executed and the suspense was well developed. In terms of plot it's probably typical for the genre, but the distaff characters and the blurred lines between life and afterlife, between love and vampirism make this a great piece.

Tech Problems. Not the actors' fault.
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Sort of. It randomly jumped back to the beginning at least a dozen times.
What other book might you compare Carmilla to and why?
It certainly appears that Bram Stoker got his ideas from this story.
Would you listen to another book narrated by the narrators?
Yes
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Yes
Any additional comments?
The tech problems ruined it. The foremost voices were too loud, so I turned down the volume, then those actors who chimed in needed more volume and I tuned it up which resulted in the first voices who reappeared blast out my ear drums--the words ending in "s" sound like hisses. As a runner, I resented having to continually stop to adjust the volume and to try to find the story after the book inexplicably jumped back to the beginning ("This is Audible")--over and over. On the bright side, the actors are quite good and a movie with them would be terrific..

Amazing!!!!
This was so beautifully done! I listened to the production as I read along with the book and it really helped me visualize the story! My only dislikes was that some character names had been changed and not mentioned i.e Lafontane was not included as well as the mention of Baron Vordenburg which was replaced by the doctor. When reading along, it skipped some parts in the book and dialogue was added but was well done and allowed more character development instead of just hearing Laura's thoughts. Overall, amazing and will definitely be listening to it again. Highly recommended!

Intriguing
This classic gothic novella from the late 1800s was perfect for wimps like me who can't manage anything too scary. This is a tale of vampiric behaviour and it's effect on victims. Whilst I knew all along the direction of the storyline, it was intriguing, suitably dark, with a touch of sexual suggestion. The audio was more than straight narration, it was dramatised and I enjoyed this immensely, especially with some famous contributors such as David Tennant.

Very good performance
It loses a star overall simply because it's not a seamless listen. The introduction starts over every chapter, which unfortunately takes you away from the story and back to real awareness. It feels like being abruptly woken from a beautiful nightmare.

Perfect Bedtime Story
It's a long time since I last read Carmilla, I was put off the story somewhat after seeing a poor film adaptation of the story. However after finding this dramatization of the book, add the name David Tennant, and I knew that I was in for a treat, I was not disappointed. I was gently drawn in and carried along with the plot, I enjoyed it enormously. More please.

Fascinating story and wonderful performance
The narration for this story was excellent. although the affected accent by David Tennant was a little distracting. The story itself was compelling, although with some outdated views, but that can be expected of a story from the 1800s. Overall a very enjoyable experience.

Excellent Performances
Any additional comments?
Another excellent production from Audible Originals with a brilliant cast. I really enjoyed this story also and the performances were brilliant particularly Rose Leslie and Phoebe Fox as Laura and Carmilla. Of course David Tennant is always brilliant. Overall a very enjoyable listen and I would highly recommend.

Well Played Full Cast Carmilla
A well formed production of Sheriden Le Fanu's erotic Carmilla is perfectly acted by a full cast and with back ground sound that adds to make it believable that you feel you are in that creepy era. The atmosphere is seductive as well as scary. No over or underacting. All blends well together to give an exotic countenance to a scary almost fairy tale take of the female Dracula with fangs and long finger nails. I like the eerie atmosphere and gentle feel about the play. You get a good enjoyable 3 hours to sit back and relax (take the phone off) and go into another world.

An old story told well.
What made the experience of listening to Carmilla the most enjoyable?
The performances from all the cast were excellent.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
The age of the original material was always going to limit a vampire tale being told to a modern audience. That being said this was well done and not a let down at all.
What about the narrators’s performance did you like?
Excellent performances from all involved.

A thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining tale.
Well acted and narrated, but not to be taken too seriously - a great tale in the gothic genre.

Excellent old vampire story
Vampire tales have evolved greatly over the years, from their folkloric origins to modern stories of glitter and gore. This story, predating Break Stoker's work, leans much more towards the elegant and romantic (as well as Romantic) than many before and since. A short story as audiobooks go, you can drink deep of this sanguine drama in a single evening, should such be your wish. The cast performed Carmilla brilliantly and should be deeply commended.

Much better than expected
I was very pleasantly surprised by this audible drama. To be honest I wasn’t expecting very much. However the story was very engaging and the performances were very good.
