Story
One of my dad’s favorite jokes about getting older was: “I went out for coffee when I was twenty-one and when I got back I was fifty-eight!” I get what he meant now. Time flies. My first book, If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a "B" Movie Actor, was published back in 2001 and it chronicles the adventures of a “mid-grade, kind of hammy actor" (my words), cutting his teeth on exploitation movies far removed from mainstream Hollywood. This next book, an “Act II” if you will, could be considered my “maturing years” in show business, when I began to say “no” more often and gravitated toward self-generated material. Taking stock in the overall quality of my life, I fled Los Angeles and moved to a remote part of Oregon to renew, regroup and reload. If that sounds tame, the journey from Evil Dead to Spider-Man to Burn Notice was long, with plenty of adventures/mishaps along the way. I never pictured myself hovering above Baghdad in a Blackhawk helicopter, facing a pack of wild dogs in Bulgaria, or playing an aging Elvis Presley with cancer on his penis - how can you predict this stuff? The sheer lunacy of show business is part of the fun for me and I hope you'll come along for the ride.

This unforgettable saga of crime and corruption, passion and loyalty continues to stand the test of time, as the definitive novel of the Mafia underworld. A #1 New York Times bestseller in 1969, Mario Puzo's epic was turned into the incomparable film of the same name, directed by Francis Ford Coppola, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture. From its first publication in 1992, Men, Women, and Chain Saws has offered a groundbreaking perspective on the creativity and influence of horror cinema since the mid-1970s. Investigating the popularity of the low-budget tradition, Carol Clover looks in particular at slasher, occult, and rape-revenge films. Although such movies have been traditionally understood as offering only sadistic pleasures to their mostly male audiences, Clover demonstrates that they align spectators not with the male tormentor, but with the females tormented.

This fascinating literary memoir of the making of the film comes from the unique perspective of Gunnar Hansen, the actor who played the chain saw-wielding Leatherface. Leatherface Speaks
The urban legends that swirl around the film Texas Chainsaw Massacre, that it was based on real events; that there were violent, drug-fueled orgies on set; that it was a “snuff” film; are far nuttier than the real deal. And yet—even the most outlandish rumors have kernels of truth in them.
Gunnar Hansen sets out to give us the real dope—and an eye-opening lesson in film-making along the way.
It’s just as juicy and pop-cult-crazed as it sounds—the heightened tension on the set, the unending brutal heat, blown takes, and the pot brownies, everyone just barely holding it together—it gets a little visceral.
Not to mention the horrific truth about the radical financial and physical exploitation of the cast and crew.
Chain Saw Confidential, is a remarkable film history document, that covers everything from scene-to-scene breakdowns, to the philosophical and aesthetic debates over the nature of horror itself.
Gunnar Hansen himself reads his work with aplomb.

Phenomenal book, and a wonderful legacy piece.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is my favorite movie of all time; I've got a Leatherface portrait tattooed on my chest. Needless to say, I'm a fan.
SO much phenomenal insight into the making of the film, its origins; and just how difficult it was to make. I knew a lot of this before listening to the book, but there is a ton of new stuff here as well.
What I did not expect, was just how gifted a writer, and how intelligent Gunnar was. There is an extensive portion towards the end of the book that deals with the origins of horror films, and the social/philosophical implications they have had on society. This part was such a breath of fresh air, as Gunnar annihilates and dissects in incredibly eloquent fashion- the misnomer that horror films are a negative influence.
I am deeply grateful I got a chance to hear this and hearing it from the man himself (the narration is fantastic), gives it a completely different and vaunted place in my audiobook collection.
Gunnar should be proud, and I think this should stand as a legacy not only to the movie, but the man behind the mask.
RIP Gunnar.
5 stars across the board.

Delivers More Than It Promises
I really enjoyed this book. So often books about a movie or event written by one of the participants aren't really about that movie or event, but are a chance for the participant to talk about him or herself, and in doing so to aggrandize or over-emphasize his or her contribution.
There is none of that in "Chain Saw Confidential." Gunnar Hansen writes with an appreciation of not only the legendary film in which he was a major participant, but also for the filmmakers and, perhaps more importantly, for his co-stars. Hansen tells the story how he remembers it, often offering accounts from other participants that differ from his own. Perhaps paradoxically, this makes Hansen's account seem all the more reliable.
This was a fun book, and concerns itself with the story (and the legend) of "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre," and not just with poet/writer/actor Gunnar Hansen. After reading CSC, I've come away with an even greater appreciation of this film, and a wonder that it ever got made. For someone who is a fan of TTCM or of horror movies in general, this is a fantastic book. Highly recommended.

Interesting
This gave a lot of great insight to a horror movie I have loved since I was a little girl. There was a lot of great information about the making of the movie, from how it got made, the aftermath, the financial side of things, and some great stories on the set. There was a lot of interesting stuff that most people wouldn`t know. One little funny move that Leatherface made that always made me smile, was actually a mistake because Gunnar Hansen was stoned! This book is a must for any Chainsaw fan.

What a wonderful way to further immortalize Gunnar
I absolutely loved this. An intelligent insight from a man that was so much more than “Leatherface”. I love that the simplicity of the storytelling was a perfect compliment to the complexity of the subject matter. It beautifully mirrored The Texas Chainsaw Massacre in that way.

Must-Listen Audiobook For Horror & Movie Fans!
Joe Bob Briggs called The Texas Chain Saw Massacre the greatest movie ever made, and for nearly 50 years it has captured the imagination of fans worldwide. Chain Saw is one of the most influential and profoundly impactful horror movies of all time. It's raw, gritty vibe and unrelenting willingness to make the viewer feel uncomfortable is what set it apart from the competition at the time and why it remains a timeless piece of celluloid. Gunnar Hansen played the iconic Leatherface in Chain Saw, and, thankfully, two years before passing away from pancreatic cancer at the age of 68, he put pen to paper and wrote a book all about the legendary movie to which he was inextricably attached. Even better than this, Gunnar Hansen chose to narrate the audiobook version of his book, Chain Saw Confidential, which is an Audible Original.
Listening to Chain Saw Confidential was an absolute joy! Gunnar Hansen's comforting voice is easy on the ears and pulled me in right away. By the end of the book, it was clear to me just how intelligent and deep this man was. This made me regret never having the opportunity to meet Gunnar Hansen at a horror convention prior to his untimely death. By all accounts, he was a charming and kind person that the fans adored. In this book, Gunnar Hansen tells the real story of the film, debunking myths, giving behind-the-scenes details, and offering insights on Chain Saw's reception and the enduring fascination with the horror genre today. The fact that he explores more than just the making of the film itself is what takes this book to the next level. The making-of details, of course, are excellent, especially because they caused the iconic scenes he described to replay in my mind as I listened to his insights about how they were created and shot. Gunnar Hansen waxing poetic and getting philosophical on why some find horror movies to be disdainful while others absolutely love them is the type of depth I didn't know I wanted or needed from a book like this, but I'm damn sure happy it's part of this impressive tome. He really went the extra mile when writing this impressive book.
Chain Saw Confidential is a must-read for all fans of horror or cinema. It's an intelligent and insightful account of what it took to make one of the greatest movies of all time. Additionally, Gunnar Hansen debunks myths along the way, some of which are hilarious, and he offers up a deep, analytical view on the horror genre itself. While I can never say that I met the man in person, I sure feel like I know Gunnar Hansen quite well because of his beautiful book, and I'm eternally grateful that he decided to narrate the audiobook version because by doing so he created an intimate and lasting story for us to enjoy. May Gunnar Hansen rest in peace, and may The Texas Chain Saw Massacre live on forever.

The Only True Story of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Gunnar Hansen's book provides an intriguing insight into arguably the world's most controversial horror film. He dispels all the rumors and sheds light on how the mystique of the film garnered it the reputation it still has to this day.
His narration is excellent and engaging. How could this mild-mannered writer go on to be such a notorious film icon? I really enjoyed his retelling of the events surrounding the film but also liked his personal background and stories of the hardships everyone faced personally and monetarily. For a film that seemed so real, this book's brutal truth hits even harder.
I recommend this wholeheartedly to anyone interested in not just horror but films themselves as it's an eye opening look into how a $3,000 budget stretched to international acclaim and infamy. RIP Gunnar Hansen.

My family's always been in meat
This is a solid production history for one of the greatest horror movies ever made, written by the actor who played its star villain. Gunnar Hansen was a smart and capable writer, and as well as offering his own memories he has interviewed many other cast and crew members to get their thoughts (as well as John Landis, who seems to represent the movie's fan base). Hansen doesn't linger too long over any aspect of production, and unlike a lot of these sorts of books he doesn't skimp on post-production even though he obviously was not present for it.
Hansen had a pleasant speaking voice, though sometimes a little monotonous. An easy listen.

Really enjoyed the real story of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre from the man himself. Really funny at times and shows how the mind can insert things into a movie that just aren't there. Hilarious but also a chilling sign of today's Social Media times, that people can be completely fooled into thinking this really happened lol. Amazing book, terrible recording.
Brilliant story from the perspective of Leatherface and other cast members. The only problem is the quality of the recording, which is terrible. You have to turn it up really high if you are anywhere other than at home or in a library and when you do, Gunnar's voice becomes muffled and difficult to understand. Shame because it really is a very interesting listen.

The story of a classic
Fascinating story read beautifully by the late Gunnar Hansen. Well worth a listen, especially if you're a fan of TTCSM. Full of great insights and brilliant stories.

Fascinating and enthralling
As a filmmaker myself I absolutely love this book and what it says about horror and cinema in general. It is a perfect testiment to how pushing the boundaries can lead to scrutiny as well as praise.
