Great concept, execution problems
I wanted to love this book, but it was a struggle. There are a lot of purposeful oddities, but there are so many that it overshadows the actual story being told. Without going into spoilers, we see a young boy's life at sea and life at home. The problem I have is that the life at sea is shown so much that the reader is bogged down with what I'll call purposeful nonsense that is so abstract that it's easy to find yourself waiting for something of consequence. Yes, it has a purpose, but the pacing is unbalanced, so viewing his life at home feels like the story is very thin.
The concept is interesting, but the execution just falls short for me.
The narrator of the audiobook is great.
I love a lot of Shusterman's books, so I was a little let down by this one. But at least in true Shusterman style, he doesn't shy away from real issues. Even though I didn't love it, it will still stick with me because of that. And really, how often can you say that?

Journey into the Mind
What was one of the most memorable moments of Challenger Deep?
Of the many memorable moments, several of the most are near the end of the book, but I won't tell you what they are because I want you to listen to the book yourself and feel your own most memorable moments.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Yes, there is a line in the book in which the boy said that "Dead children are put on pedestals while children with mental illness are swept under the rug." This insight into his predicament at a mental hospital resonated with me.
Any additional comments?
The book is a mishmash of Moby Dick, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Treasure Island, Gulliver's Travels, Alice in Wonderland, and One Flew Over the Cockoo's Nest all masterfully reimagined in this literary mix tape. You will enjoy yourself and not be disappointed.

Schizo-Effect Disorder from the perspective of a 15 yr old boy
I'm disappointed that the book description doesn't mention the Mental Disability of this 15 yr old boy, and what was going thru his mind, & happening with it, during his 1st Psychotic break. This is an excellent book for any parent, raising a teenager with Schizo-Effect, Bipolar, or any other mental disability that is challenging to both the teenager & parent! I have so much more insight as to what my daughter has been going thru since SHE was 15 yrs old! In someways I wish she had a Psychotic break before she finally did at age 19. There is so much more we would've been able to understand! Thank you to NPR Pop Culture Happy Hour for turning me on to this book! I absolutely loved it & pray I've learned to be more patient & understanding with my children!

Beautiful
This book portrays mental heath issues in such an accurate and amazing way. I see pieces of my own depression and anxiety every time I reread this book. My friend has a brother with schizophrenia and said she cried reading this book because there were scenes that reminded her of exactly some of the things her brother does during his episodes.
I have read and listened to this book about a dozen times, and every time, I have new realizations and make new connections between the events of the book. It is a story that just keeps giving and giving. 10/10 would recommend, particularly to anyone with any experience with mental illness.

Moving, gripping, funny and unforgetable
The story documenting a fifteen year old boy's experience of mental illness is all of these and everything about it is made even better by the faultless reading which, with its range of characterisation and clarity must surely make it a candidate for one of Audible's best recordings. I shall never forget this book and will listen to it again.

Mixed ...
A good story, and an important look into metal illness. That said, some of it was difficult to follow, it felt a little bit disjointed, although that was intended and necessary, it was still a little difficult to follow at times.
This story was also inspired by the author's personal experience with this subject, who did an excellent job bringing some light to the issue.
The narrator also did a top notch job of reading the story.
