Critic Reviews

"Jenny Nimmo...has a brilliant sense of storytelling and a well-tuned ear for good writing. Shakespearean actor Simon Russell Beale adds wonder to this book with his rich baritone reading." (AudioFile)

Excellent

Henry gets into so much trouble since he is impulsive. It's all anyone can do to keep saving Henry from all the trouble he gets into. He is a sweet boy but he needs lots of supervision.

this series is becoming my favorite!!

although i feel like i missed out on these books as a kid, i’m so glad my partner introduced me to them because they’re no less entertaining now. i feel like i’m inside the story with the characters, tagging along on each adventure. her imagery feels like magic as i listen! a great read for any audience, i’d say. the narrator is brilliant as well! he makes each character seem so real and i can’t imagine anyone else doing it.

so much airspace

The story itself was good and the narrator was good. The publisher very obviously did not do any QC before releasing the audio, however. So many gaps in audio, which was very annoying. I hope they look at fixing this for future listeners.

Narrator success

I enjoyed this book, the narration was perfect.
I wish the last three books had this narrator as well.

Fantastic story!

This was a great book. The characters are excellently developed. It’s fairly easy to know the good vs the evil but also the bullied and the bullies, the conflicted and the determined.
Excellent for tweens and teens. Also for adults.

Charlie finds his own way

Charlie morphs from passivity to action in response to his peril at school. Surrounded by so much malicious plotting, Charlie shows courage and compassion, and is now supported by a cast of talented companions. Whereas the first book felt dark, the series infuses a bit of joy here and there. And in the darkness, there is comedy - the absurdity of his grandmothers and aunts.

This book has been reissued with another narrator as well. Both narrators, Beale here and Coen in the more recent version, are very listenable in their different styles; but bump up the speed. I like Beale best, but often the first listen locks in our image of a book.

Slower than book 1 but still good

This is a pleasant series. Book 2 is a bit weaker in plot than book 1 but I felt as if many important facts were revealed for future stories. This one held my interest and resolved itself in an acceptable manner. I am glad to move on to the next book though. I do like the characters and I like how the author allows them each to grow and change in each book. I especially like that this series is acceptable for middle school kids, since I do share my library with a couple.
