Story
The most important rule for an Apprentice Consul is simple: Don't get involved with daemons. Well, Piper is planning to break that rule - big time. After a near-deadly scandal with the Sahar Stone, she has the chance to return to the only life she's ever wanted. All she has to do to keep her Apprenticeship is forget about Ash and Lyre. Ash might be enigmatic and notoriously lethal, and Lyre might be as sinfully irresistible as he is irritating, but they're not bad for a couple of daemons.

But that’s nothing compared to what happens next. Brutally murdered by an unknown assailant, I wake up 12 hours later in the morgue - and I’m very much alive. I don’t know how or why it happened. When I arrived at my uncle's house, I expected my relatives to be like me - outcast sorcerers who don't practice magic. I was right about the sorcery, but wrong about everything else. Rule two: Don't listen to the demon. My uncle chose a far deadlier power. He calls creatures of darkness into our world, binds them into service contracts, and sells them to the highest bidder. And I'm supposed to act like I don't know how illegal and dangerous it is. Rule three: Don't talk to the demon. All I had to do was keep my nose out of it.

Broke, almost homeless, and recently fired. Those are my official reasons for answering a wanted ad for a skeevy-looking bartender gig. It went downhill the moment they asked me to do a trial shift instead of an interview - to see if I'd mesh with their "special" clientele. I think that part went great. Their customers were complete dickheads, and I was an asshole right back. That's the definition of fitting in, right? I expected to get thrown out on my ass. Instead, they...offered me the job?

Let's get one thing straight - Ivy Wilde is not a heroine. In fact she's probably the last witch in the world you'd call if you needed a magical helping hand, regardless of her actual abilities. If it were down to Ivy, she'd spend all day every day on her sofa, where she could watch TV, munch junk food, and talk to her feline familiar to her heart's content. However, when a bureaucratic disaster ends up with Ivy as the victim of a case of mistaken identity, she's yanked very unwillingly into Arcane Branch.

Publisher's Summary
Piper Griffiths wants one thing in life: To become a Consul, a keeper of the peace between humans and daemons. There are precisely three obstacles in her way.
The first is Lyre. Incubus. Hotter than hell and with a wicked streak to match. His greatest mission in life is to get Piper into bed and otherwise annoy the crap out of her.
The second is Ash. Draconian. Powerful. Dangerous. He knows too much and reveals nothing. Also, disturbingly attractive - and scary. Did she mention scary?
The third is the Sahar Stone. Top secret magical weapon of mass destruction. Previously hidden in her Consulate until thieves broke in, went on a murder spree, and disappeared with the weapon.
And they left Piper to take the fall for their crimes
.Now she's on the run, her dreams of becoming a Consul shattered and every daemon in the city gunning to kill her. She's dead on her own, but there's no one she can trust - no one except two entirely untrustworthy daemons...see problems one and two.

One of my new fave series
I'm leaving this review on all of the books from this series, but no real spoilers here.
I can say that I'm terribly sad that I'm almost done with the 5th book in this series (even if only 3 are on audible), I am worried that I won't be able to find another series that I love quite like this one, not for awhile. But in another way I'm a little bit glad that I am almost done because I can get back to my life afterward!
I read a ton of books. I don't always leave reviews, but I had to leave one for this series because it kept me going and going and going. I never wanted to put it down. I had to force myself to do so. And when I found that the last two books were not on audible I almost cried, not kidding. The narrator, while not my favorite at first, ended up fantastic.
The plot was awesome. Slight spoiler here: the love story is terrific. There wasn't much of the icky-sweet, romantic-puke, "our love is the strongest love that ever existed" crap that I see in other series that always makes me go "Really? C'mon now." This one was so much more realistic.
I like that the characters are strong but faulted. I love how the friendship between the 3 grows so strong. I wish Piper would say "Thank you" once in awhile, but I'll get over it. I like how the twists happen, when you think one thing might happen and then, bam, another thing happens.
This series had me gripped from *literally* (I'm using that with it's intended meaning), the first chapter of the first book. That is my favorite type of book, the kind that just grip you and won't let you go. I haven't had that happen to me for a long time and it was such a pleasant surprise, even if it did keep my up until 3 in the morning a few times. These are going on my faves shelf because...well...they are.
Dear Annette Marie, more please? Pretty please?

Got past the cover art to enjoy the book
I avoided this series for awhile because I didn't like the illustrations on the covers. It's strange how much that first impression affects my book selections, but I'm glad I finally gave it a try.
I really enjoyed the three main characters and the relationships they built. The main girl was annoying at times (overreacted to several situations in ways that hurt one of the other characters), but I liked that she made up for her lack of magical abilities with fighting skills and determination. The two guys pulled me in, both with their looks and personalities. You slowly get to know them throughout the book, and there isn't an instant love connection for no reason, but there is attraction which will probably lead to a love triangle.
The book had a lot of action, and there was a new challenge for the characters around every corner. The ending isn't a cliff hanger, but there are lots of things left untold that make me want to continue with the rest of the series right away. Hope Audible publishes the whole series soon!
I know there are a lot of comments about the narrator already, but I'll add my opinion. She did a reasonable job. The things that bothered me are how young/immature she sounds (but I know the main character is young too), and many times she shouted or used a tone of voice that just didn't make sense in the context. Yes, she sounds a bit congested, but I got used to that. Overall, it was ok and didn't ruin the book.

Seriously, is it the mix? Or is it the narrator. It sounds like she needed a tissue the whole time, and was highly distracting. Story was good. Character is a little immature but she is young so I guess thats okay.

Had a hard time finishing the book.
The story wasn't bad, but I was not a fan of the female lead. She was suppose to be in training to be a Consul , yet she reacts to every conflict with emotion, drama and makes one stupid choice after another. An immature teenager who is suppose to be a leader, follows everyone around and when she asserts herself, it is always disastrous. After awhile it became too much.
I ended up skipping to the end to see what happened. I will not be continuing with the series.

Pass the narrator atissue
The story was good, but OMG, the nasally tone of the narrator was just too much. I kept wanting to tell her to blow your nose. She sounded stuffy... So I had to stop listing to the book....
I just hope the producers and editors read these reviews, and pay better attention on details that ultimately ruins an audiobok... What a waste!!!! Once again, a good story botched by a bad narrator and production company.

The narrator needs help!
I've never written a review before, but I feel I must. The story was fantastic. I loved the book. The narrator? Oh my goodness. First, the good: she has a nice tone, she speaks well and has decent acting skills. The bad: . She sounds like she has a cold for the entire book, and for about 25% of the book sounds as if she's actually plugging her nose. My biggest pet peeve throughout the entire book that was INCREDIBLY distracting is that she doesn't pronounce L's that are preceded by O's. Example: shoulder shoulder very obviously has a L in the middle of it but she pronounces it SHOW-DER. Hold? Pronounced HOAD. Is this a dialect thing? I don't know, but PLEASE SOMEONE! Give her some tips!! She could be very good with some coaching, but then again so could I. It is so bad and so distracting that I'm really debating whether or not to get the second book. I did really enjoy the the story itself, but her narration is so distracting to me I'm not sure if I'm going to purchase book two.
My big question is: why did no one notice this in the proofing/editing/whatever they do with audio books??

Can someone give the narrator a cold medicine?
The series itself has potential. Since the main character seems to be a teenager, I take she is portrayed as annoying as she is because she is a teenager in the first book of a series. I mean, one can hope she has to grow and her powers will make her a better person, right? Now, the narrator is another story. What is wrong with her very nasal voice? Was she sick? Does she have a cold? It was painful!

HORRIBLE narrator!! Made me return the book
I have a rule. Give the narrator one hour so they can relax into their role. Ittook everything in me to stick to that with this book, because within that one hour, I cringed over a dozen times and paused it twice. It wasn't the writing... that actually was already interesting to me. It was the narrator. She is dreadful. She slips into this nasally tone frequently, often mid-sentence that makes it sound like the characters are being strangled. Needless to say, I returned this book... and I never return books. I've heard so many good things about this series, so I'll pick up a paperback copy instead. Do not waste your time on this!

Great story, shame about narration
The story was very good. Unfortunately, I was seriously distracted by the nasal quality of the narrator. It sounded very much like she had a horrific cold or a peg on her nose and was struggling to breath, could really do with being rerecorded

Never narrate a book when you have a cold!!!
Would you try another book written by Annette Marie or narrated by Jorjeana Marie?
I would normally carry on with a series and buy the next book straight away but the narrator has put me off and I've started something else instead
What didn’t you like about Jorjeana Marie’s performance?
Does this narrator have a cold....I had to speed the book up as it became very annoying...
Such a shame as the book was ok.

Brilliant Book
I loved this book, I have read it 3 times already and purchased the ebooks to listen to while I was painting my house. This is a brilliantly well thought and gripping story, giving me such vivid pictures of the scenes. At the start I thought Piper was a little naive but she really grows, Ash and Lyre are just amazing characters from the start.

fantastic start to an amazing series
Would you consider the audio edition of Chase the Dark to be better than the print version?
I have not read the book but I don't think anything could take away the depth and wonder the narrator brings to the story at first i thought she was annoying because of the way she pronounced Deamons but that was my fault as it shows later that she was saying Daemons ,two different things shes amazing all through the series.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Chase the Dark?
the characters develop the beginnings of their friendship and growth in this book.the main story line is the spring board for a very interesting series.Im writing this review after listening to all of the books so I cant pin point anything with out knowing the outcome of the books but it is certainly worth reading.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
100% i didn't stop at all, i even started the next
Any additional comments?
I'd recommend this series whole heartedly.

I agree with others,
The story itself is really quite different and interesting, as are the characters and I particularly liked Piper and good enough for me to purchase the second book in the series half way through this one. However the narrator could be better, I don’t know whether it’s a regional dialect thing but the narrator does much of the time sound like she has a blocked nose and her pronunciation could be better but it is something you get used to after awhile. Otherwise I really recommend this book 🐨

What happened to the main characters?
I don't know what happened between this book and the spell weaver series but I hate that Ash and Lyr have turned into weak almost magicless characters, I've been wishing they had different t names altogether together. l also don't like the narrator's whining sounding voice.

The narrator is very, very nasal!
I disliked this narrator so much i actually returned the book, but for some reason it was still downloaded on my phone, when i had nothing else to do, i listen to it again and got swept away by the story. I have re-bought the book again, and the next. I was sorry to see she uses the same narrator through out this series, hopefully she just had a cold- I'm not sure i can get through the complete series with someone who only speaks through their nose. . .
If this is the first book you are thinking of getting, I would suggest either of her other series which are both great and not as annoying to listen to.

Great story. Narration could be improved a little.
Loved the story and am looking forward to the next book. Took a chapter or two to get used to the narrator, especially after listening to another narrator do the Demonized series first. I found that this narrator did well enough with the voices, but her inflections... occasional volume change (or w/E you'd call it) in both the spoken parts and narrations weren't always consistent or fitting with the situations as well as the narrator for Demonized.
Still, I am hooked and about to continue with Book Two.

Can’t wait
Although the narrator is a little nasally she does a good job. The story is great and I can’t wait for the rest of the series.

Dark Suspenseful YA Urban Fantasy
A fast paced post-apocalyptic urban fantasy spoilt by the narration. However, once you acclimatise to the accent and the variable tonal quality, you become enmeshed in the fate of Piper, Lyre and Ash. The magical Sahar stone is stolen. The trio are the main suspects. Hunted by the daemons, the haemons and the humans, Piper and Lyre, an Incubus and Ash, a Drakonian warrior, bond together, learning of trust and betrayal as they seek to clear themselves.
This is definitely for a YA audience with the teenage angst about betrayal; her mother, her father, and Ash are all perceived to fail her. Really Piper needs to demonstrate the skills she is learning as an apprentice consul, analyse the situation and make unemotional assessments. Piper could practice empathy and be less egocentric.
However, I must admit that I thoroughly enjoyed the story. Dark, twisted, with sexual sizzle and snarky banter. Best bit? the bout with Ash in the Styx Fight Club. Very clever.

Not bad for a YA
Ok, I am not a YA fan anymore, as I am well and truly over teenage love angst and tantrums.
What I disliked was there was a couple sections that the performer sounded like she had a cold and they edited in some sections and it was not smooth.
But having said that I did not mind the book. The story moved along nicely with a couple of twists so in the end it was quite enjoyable.
If you are like me and not into YA Try the authors Guild Codex series

So silly.
This writer can create great stories but....
Why oh why do so many authors create their lead female heroine as an imbecile.
In this instance, Piper swings from proficient fighter, diplomat, educated young woman to a brat without a brain. The interesting story loses its credibility. The reader (me) wants to throw the book away and discontinue the series. Pleas, Authors, keep your heroes consistent.

Good story - flat narration
This is a good story let down by the flat narrator. Their voice lacked any real emotion.
