Publisher's Summary

The ISMC Wants You!

Abner Fortis joined the International Space Marine Corps for two reasons: to escape a life of drudgery building biodomes for his father’s company and to pay off several billion credits in student loans, which the ISMC promised to do.

Every Space Marine starts out as a cherry, though, and Abner is no different. When he makes his first combat drop, or cherry drop, he’s a know-nothing second lieutenant added to the mission roster as an afterthought. The Space Marines are tasked to support the Galactic Resource Conglomerate (GRC), while they test a revolution in military technology: Precision Crafted Soldiers (PCS). All the Space Marines have to do is kill bugs. Even when a tragic accident leaves Fortis in command, the mission is still an easy breather. When the Space Marines discover proof of a long-buried betrayal, though, friends become enemies, and their mission goes awry. Does Fortis have what it takes to lead the Space Marines to survival in the face of overwhelming odds?

Fast moving, fun Military SciFi

John Pirhalla’s narration was great. The voices and accents just kept on coming. The right narrator can make a fun book even better. Definitely the case here. Haven’t read any of Piatt until this book. I look forward to book 2.

Really liked this.

This is the first book I’ve ever read by this author and I like it. To be honest, it gets a little drawn out about 60% of the way through, but then picks back up and moves right along.
I see books 2 and 4 are in audiobook now so I’m adding them into my listening queue. Give this author a chance and I think you will too.

annoying characters

I struggled with this audio book, because I just disliked most of the characters. everytime a character was given a choice they always made the wrong one. the main character only survived by dumb luck. the preformer (reader) who read the book was the only part that made thos book bearable.

Fantastic Mil SF without all the slog

Piatt gets on with the storytelling by jettisoning all the lame technical manual descriptions of made-up technology. We get a brief explainer on the ISMC's motto, DINLI, and then we're off! I finished it in one nearly uninterrupted session and bought the second novel right away. Pirhalla's narration is great. Loads of accents to help distinguish characters and flesh out the intentionally international feel of the ISMC. As I write this I've already finished the third book in the series and will be buying Extra Credits to get the rest that are available right now.
