Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

Contemporary psychology derives largely from the experimental laboratory or from Freudian theory. It is preoccupied with minute aspects of animal and human behaviour or with psychopathology.

Alfred Adler was an Austrian physician, psychotherapist, and one of the founding fathers of modern psychology. In Understanding Human Nature, (1928), Adler sets out to acquaint the general public with the basics of Individual Psychology, which holds that the driving force of human behavior is the individual’s striving for power, partly to compensate for feelings of inferiority. The purpose of the book is to identify mistaken behaviors and show how they undermine healthy relationships, in order to gently guide the individual towards adjustment.

The late Carl Rogers, founder of the humanistic psychology movement and father of client-centered therapy, based his life's work on his fundamental belief in the human potential for growth. A Way of Being was written in the early 1980s, near the end of Carl Rogers's career, and serves as a coda to his classic On Becoming a Person. More philosophical than his earlier writings, it traces his professional and personal development and ends with a prophetic call for a more humane future.

By: Carl R. Rogers, and others
Publisher's Summary
Dr. William Glasser offers a new psychology that, if practiced, could reverse our widespread inability to get along with one another, an inability that is the source of almost all unhappiness.
For progress in human relationships, he explains that we must give up the punishing, relationship-destroying external control psychology. For example, if you are in an unhappy relationship right now, he proposes that one or both of you could be using external control psychology on the other. He goes further. And suggests that misery is always related to a current unsatisfying relationship. Contrary to what you may believe, your troubles are always now, never in the past. No one can change what happened yesterday.

Incredible theory that is a must-read!
I definitely capture the vision of the author and think it would be best if everyone could at least expose themself to this concept of Choice Theory. I could see relationships, marriages, parent-child dynamics and schools improving greatly if the majority of people could adopt this way of thinking.

Interesting..
I learned a lot from the book..I can see how I can apply much of what was shared to my life. I still struggle a little with the idea of how to implement it in my life with my children. In a perfect world, I can see how wonderful it would be if everyone adopted choice theory, but that is not the case. My children are still attending schools that do not offer such thinking..I still interact daily with people who are attempting to deal with me using external control. I will be a work in progress 😊

Make a great choice; read this one!
Choice Theory: A New Psychology of Personal Freedom by William Glasser, M.D. is an excellent guide for building strong relationships in your marriage, with your children, in education, and in business. Using basic principles fleshed out by detailed case studies, Glasser leads the reader to effective strategies in these and other situations where building relationships will resolve problems. Glasser contrasts external coercion based with choice based approaches to building and maintaining relationships. He suggests that humans have five inherited needs which vary genetically in their importance to us. These varying needs in those with whom we have or need to have relationships are at the heart of conflict. Dr. Glasser's principles are easily understood, but are counter intutive to the external coercive models of relating to which we are accustomed. I intend to add this book to my reread regularly list. I highly recommend this book to anyone who struggles to relate to those in his or her life.

Good book, good theory, great narration!
First of all I’m a psychologist in training so I bought this book for practical reasons. Choice theory and reality therapy can be a little hard to swallow but Glasser shows us great vignettes of therapy sessions that makes us think and understand his theory. Overall it was a good book and the theory is pretty great. The narrator was superb! He changes voices in the vignettes and dramatized the therapy session.
