Evelyn's deeds are coming back to haunt her. Free to travel among the stars, the former warlord is enjoying her freedom, even if she’s occasionally exasperated by the women who’ve attached themselves to her. They accompany her as she encounters wonders, from dryad terraforming ships to the orcish arenas of Skaloth. Yet Evelyn has enemies, and they have not forgotten her. They target one of the few people she truly cares about, knowing that Evelyn will come. When she does she may be drawn into a trap from which even she can’t escape.

What should you do when you're dragged to the hells? As a holy maiden of the Phoenix Queen, Jasmine was a prize of immense value to the demons. To their shock, she and her nearly defeated rescuers are rescued by the beautiful but scathing Xandra, an enslaved elven sorceress who’d been damned for over a millennium. And the fickle hand of fate would reunite her with Xandra again, once darkness shrouded her homeland and all the other holy maidens are captured. She doesn't know that acerbic, destructive sorceress will provide her only source of hope for the future.

The life of a giant bee is a simple one. The life of a giant bee when her queen turns the entire hive into human-like apis to fend off an attack? That’s a good deal more complicated. Getting down from a 50-foot giant rose without wings while surviving the attacks of malevolent wasps is just a start. Surviving long enough to figure out what to do with her new life proves to be something of a challenge, but at least that much is understandable. Of course, that’s when she gets sucked into the tangled web of an ambitious demon lord who’s threatening to plunge the world into a war.

Publisher's Summary
Evelyn enjoyed living a nice quiet life in an anarchic pirate port, far from the world she’d once conquered.
Then came an attack by mercenaries that made her angry. By the time the dust settled, she had a group of former slaves which she’d freed, her djinn assistant had convinced several of the women that they should join Evelyn’s brand-new harem, and she was looking for a new home, likely aboard a ship.
If nothing else, it was going to make Evelyn’s life more interesting, and she almost looked forward to it. If the rest of the cluster was sweating bullets at the reemergence of a notorious warlord, that was their problem, not hers.

Sci-Fi Fantasy At Its Best
Excellent start to a series from an author that never fails to deliver. If you have ever wanted a book that does a good job at melding magic and ftl together then look no further. Abby also does an amazing job at bringing the whole cast to life and love all the accents she gave the characters.
Will eagerly await the next installment and hope Podium and Abby continue bringing it to life.

pretty good
good voice acting, although having so many characters all introduced at the same time made it hard to keep them straight.
the whole harem thing was a but uncomfortable, but it was nice that it also made the protagonist themselves uncomfortable, and I appreciated the care that was taken around the topic of consent.
the parts were little story arcs, and were fun although pretty light in substance. each part picks up immediately after the previous one, but no strong plot threads span all the parts, so there is no grand resolution at the end.
still a fun listen, I may pick up the sequel.

A wonderful start to a series
Wonderful book with one of the best narrators out there.
While it was not stated at the end of the audible audiobook but at the end of the paper book the author stated.
“I have no idea what to make of this book. It’s like my id(ea) ran wild and told me to do whatever I wanted. Evelyn is… so strange. I think I’ve combined my love of high fantasy, powerful characters, and old pulp fiction into one insane whole. I think I like it, but I’m not entirely sure. That’s how it goes, sometimes.”
“I have thoughts on how to continue the story, and maybe even give it a more focused plotline, but for now this story is done. I hope you enjoyed Chosen of Chaos! If you’d leave a review, I’d greatly appreciate it!”
In my opinion not every book has to have a clear cut plotline. I have read many books that did not seem to have plot at all but were absolutely fun and extremely enjoyable to read. Benjamin, if you read this, I would much rather have no plot at all than to have one that is to complex to follow. Just saying :o)
But you do have a good plotline in my opinion and several good subplots if you want to develop them.
Evelyn’s story is of course the main plot which seems to be the search for her parents and possibly the more subtle subplot could be developing her relationship with Vania. further subplots appear to be the search for Ilyras data to prove who she is. The relationship between Vaneryth, an angel and Zelirana, a demon and showing how they each influence the nature of the other.
There is a lot going on in this first book of the series and a lot can be read between the lines with many directions that can be explored in future books that I look forward to reading…and listening to.
Why I loved this book.
I love strong female characters who are kind, compassionate beings who know themselves. Evelyn is not only a strong female character but a very powerful one which in my opinion makes her compassionate side even more evident. From the story it appears she never wanted to fight but was pushed into it by being forced to defend and protect herself and came to love a good fight but was never the one who started it. We know she loves her parents and will continue looking for them and hopefully find them in some future book in the series.
From the opening prologue and the epilogue it appears Vania and Evelyn have some feelings for each other that neither know the other has. I am hoping this gets explored and possibly opened up a little more in the next and hopefully further books.
In future books I would also like to see the further development of all the characters essentially bringing each character into the spotlight a little more as the series progresses because I like them all. I like Fya, Vaneryth, Star and Moon...all of them and would like to get to know all the characters a little more.

Look, if you haven't read any of this author's books yet, then what are you even doing with your life? lol. That said, I think this is my favorite yet, and Abby Craden was the perfect narrator for it. Love her work, and the voices were just amazing. A main character can make or break a story
Sorry I like most of this author's work but I just couldn't get past the first few chapters. The main character Evelyn was so incredibly unlikable I couldn't force myself to keep listening. This might change as the book goes on but from what I've read so far Evelyn's complete disdain for life brands her more as the villain of the story then a protagonist we're supposed to be interested in.
The very first thing we see of Evelyn is her being bored and deciding to lock all of her retainers in a room with her and force them to fight her to the death. Everyone around Evelyn is terrified for their lives that she might stub her toe and decide to kill anyone to close out of annoyance.
I don't need my main character to be a shining star of justice and light nor do they even have to be any kind of hero they could be a complete prick. but at the very least they have to be interesting, something beyond just being the most powerful violent thing in whatever room they're in and that's all Evelyn is so I'm giving this a hard pass.

I was very pleasantly surprised to find such a great series. the interaction between the characters is great, the relationship building is there, the narrator is awesome, and best of all the main character is badass without all the wining which you don't see in many female main characters. Interesting world, ok story.
The world the story is set in is for me a very interesting combination of fantasy and science fiction. Elves, dwarves and magic, together with space ships, guns and science. The story itself is fun but feels like a loosely connected series of adventures so far, it's good but nothing fantastic. I'd recommend the book and am going to listen to the sequel.
