Story
A child’s wish for her father comes true. The end of the world has never been so much fun. Conquering personal demons becomes all too real. It’s not always about winning; sometimes it’s about showing up for the fight. It’s about loving your life’s work, and jobs that make you question everything. In this anthology, 17 authors have woven together brand-new stories that speak to the darkness and despair that life brings while reminding us that good deeds, humor, love, sacrifice, dedication, and following our joy can ignite a light that burns so bright the darkness cannot last.

I'm not all that special, really. I'm sure there are a lot of girls with old gypsy blood who see the dead, have killer cults hunting their family, and turn into something that gets scary when they panic. Yep. I'm just an ordinary girl. I wish people would believe that. I've been labeled as one thing or another for most of my life: Death Girl. Crazy Gypsy Girl. Gothic Chick. Monster. It took my mother's death for me to finally start getting answers about what's really been going on. Unfortunately, most of the answers come from men...who aren't just men.

Not As Thrilling As Previous Books
The Narrator, Kimberly Alexis, is brilliant. I truly love her voice as Anita Blake.
This story was a bit predictable. I knew better than to let the snake lady take Anita anywhere. I know Anita would not have been that foolish. Anita being so resistant to Jean Claude, but has no problem turning him over to another master vamp that could be worse? Especially after the snake lady fiasco? I just think this book made Anita seem a little too stupid. We all know she's way smarter than what she does in this book. Just my opinion.

Not My Favorite
I have a special place for Anite but she gets annoying in this book. I understand her need to be cautious, paranoid even, but she gets downright bitchy. After the first two books, this one is much more subdued, storyline and action wise. The bright side is we get to meet Richard Zeeman. Haven't read the books yet? That alone makes it worth it. It's also nice to not have such a soul-crushing mystery involved after The Laughing Corpse.
Kimberly Alexis is a fantastic voice actor for this series, bringing all the characters alive in a way that you can picture them speaking to you. The effects can be difficult to get used to and the music sometimes over powers her reading but overall, it is fine.

OMG the voice for John Claude is terrible
Great story with lots of action. Good strong lead with interesting support characters. The narrator is not great with men's voices but certainly passable. However, she really blows it with John Claude. I hope there is an improvement as the series continues because the voice she uses for him is just squirrelly, certainly not romantic.

A lot of action with interesting twists
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes. It is a solid action-packed novel, without with a minimal dose of sexual content, especially compared to works as the series continued.
What did you like best about this story?
The interaction between Anita and Edward.
Any additional comments?
This is my favorite of the Anita Blake novels. I stopped reading/listening after the 7th, as the content moved away from action and far more toward sexual content that I have no interest for. What can be easily skipped over in text is far more difficult in the audio format. Just not for me.

I read all these books many years ago until they stopped having a story and wanted to see if they were just as good. I could not believe how quickly I was pulled back into the story line and the mystery. I can't wait to read the next one and wish I had started with the 1st.

Reviewed for uncommitted fans...
This is the first book (and last) I've read by this author. I honestly do not understand the appeal of this series.
Main gripe: the author uses way too many plot devices and suspended belief becomes impossible.
I didn't care for the ignorant prejudice from the protagonist. What's the deal with her distaste for vampires? Says she won't "date" the undead and would rather die than become one of the undead. The author doesn't explain why vampires are worth Anita defending (in some cases) but not good enough for her to "date" them. Maybe that was just a clumsy device to manufacture tension between the two...but it gets very annoying after about the 8th time.
Story drags from the middle on as the main character is all wrapped up in what she thinks, and what she feels. One moment she's self-righteous and then the next questions herself about really silly things -- childish.
It really irritates when an author will gladly have other supposedly strong characters be killed (in this case by Anita's supposedly assume fighting skills -- ummm yeah, didn't see any) but nothing can touch the protagonist. I call it the "Rambo" Dues ex machina, which was was old even in the 80's.
The sound effects are TERRIBLE! For me, music in previous audiobooks, was used to signal the end, or beginning, of a chapter. It took me a while to catch on that for this book it is used only for the action scenes. I'd been trained to get ready to transition and found myself confused when I realized they were fighting. And the sound effects are -- literally -- used as sound effects. Yikes! That production decision needs to be re-thought. I don't want to hear a gunshot ricochet while the narrative is going on, not to mention the "sucking" sounds when a knife is used.
This book was published in 1995...pagers are the most advanced technology. I know it was current for it's time, but I mistakenly thought it was only a decade old because that's when it was produced in audio version. My bad.
The book reads like a teenage angst rant. It's all Anita, Anita, Anita....blah, blah, blah...boring! Who cares what Anita thinks? She's not that great. And I don't get the appeal...
