Story
Cass (plus her ghost best friend, Jacob) is in Paris, where Cass’s parents are filming their show about the world’s most haunted cities. Sure, it’s fun eating croissants and seeing the Eiffel Tower, but there’s true ghostly danger lurking beneath Paris, in the creepy underground Catacombs. When Cass awakens a frighteningly strong spirit, she must rely on her still-developing skills as a ghost hunter - and turn to friends both old and new to help her unravel a mystery. But time is running out, and the spirit is only growing stronger.

Publisher's Summary
From number-one New York Times best-selling author Victoria Schwab comes a sweeping, spooky, evocative adventure, perfect for fans of Stranger Things and Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children.
Ever since Cass almost drowned (okay, she did drown, but she doesn't like to think about it), she can pull back the Veil that separates the living from the dead...and enter the world of spirits. Her best friend is even a ghost.
So things are already pretty strange. But they're about to get much stranger.
When Cass's parents start hosting a TV show about the world's most haunted places, the family heads off to Edinburgh, Scotland. Here, graveyards, castles, and secret passageways teem with restless phantoms. And when Cass meets a girl who shares her "gift", she realizes how much she still has to learn about the Veil - and herself.
And she'll have to learn fast. The city of ghosts is more dangerous than she ever imagined.
New York Times best-selling author Victoria Schwab delivers a thrillingly spooky and action-packed tale of hauntings, history, mystery, and the bond between friends (even if that friend is a ghost...).

Beautiful YA offering from Victoria Schwab
Great story and narration. Schwab's storytelling has never disappointed me, and this YA book is no exception. Since it is YA rather than some of her adult offerings, some who come to this book from her others may be a little surprised at the lighter tone and more straightforward storytelling. However, she doesn't condescend to her audience and offers a rich, interesting story with great characters (where Schwab shines brightest) and a compelling story line. The narrator does the story justice, as well, which is important to a well-executed audiobook!

Intended for a Younger Crowd
I live anything the V Schuab puts out. I even found this entertaining; however, it is intended for a younger crowd. I would say 5th grade and up. kinda mysterious, kinda spooky, but not the typical dark, gothic, bloody, action packed Schuab that I love!!

Easy to read but not fulfilling
3.5 star
This was a nice light and fun read. I honeslty needed a break after the Stephen King marathon. There was a good atmosphere about the book. Only it needed more bulk somehow. I couldn't relate to the characters or care much for them. But the link between Cassidy and Jacob was a very nice touch. Possibly the only reason I am considering the next book.
The talk of British/American lost in translations was hilarious.
"It's official, nothing is sacred."
No much more to say here. It's a nice go between book. Like a good break before you start a new monstrous tale. Easy to read and hard to put down. But as a stand alone, there just wasn't enough meat in it. Also while the book cover is top notch the cat is kind of confusing to me. Cass has a cat but it's not mentioned much in the book.

Pretty Mediocre
The author has better books then this one. This story is very shallow and feels kind of dated. I like the idea of a girl who speaks to ghost and has a ghost best friend. But the main character is more a check box of traits you would give a mid 2000s quirky high school loser girl then an actual personality. Has a hobby that’s artistic and outdated. Check, takes BW photography on film. Doesn’t get invited to cool kids party’s, check. Really into pop culture think, check Harry Potter. Parents work as artiest of some form check both are writers, ghost story writers. There is not much else to the main character. But the story is okay. I don’t think it worth a credit though maybe bundled with something else or bought for under $5

Meh
Okay... I guess.
I think my expectations were a bit too high for my first Victoria Schwab.
I'm not typically a middle grade reader, but I think if I was I would have enjoyed this one a bit more. It was a very predictable story, and it felt geared towards ages 9-12 more. My 10 year-old nephew would probably love it.
I listened to the whole thing because it was short, but even the decent narration didn't help keep my interest. It took me about two weeks to listen to a story that was just over 5 hours long, and that's not a great sign.
Fine, I guess, but I would recommend only for a younger audience or a seasoned middle grade reader.

It is a kid's book, but I enjoyed it
this is more of a children's book than some of the other things that she's written... I would say this is for like middle school age? like perhaps 11 to 13? I read a lot of YA and its earlier than that... it's a little slow in the beginning but it's worth the ramp up. The second book is good too.

Everything you need in a good ghost story
The tone, setting, and concept are all something I would have adored at 11 years old during my mystery novel craze. I didn’t expect it to be something I would absolutely adore now.
The writing is immersive and very well done. One of the best first person present tense POVs I’ve seen in a while.
Not to mention the fabulous job done by Reba Buhr as the narrator. She has an amazing range of accents and character voices. Her overall narration brings the written words to life.
The story is fun, adventurous, and lovely. Certainly worth your time

It matches the publisher's blurb
Excellent story for the right audience - I liked it and I don't fit that profile. It's a rare YA book that actually has parents in it, though they are just as preoccupied as Coraline's parents (Neil Gaiman). Nice step up from Bellairs The Ghost in the Mirror; on a par with Catherine Jinks Bogle series; could be followed by J. Stroud's Lockwood & Co. I will be interested in where the series goes, but could feel satisfied with the story stopping here. Doesn't yet feel like there is an unfulfilled story arc. At 5 hours per book, a good deal, if they ever go on sale; not a good deal for us credit-users.

Hunting ghosts in Edinburgh
A great setting for this story, Edinburgh makes ghost stories sound real. In this one, the narrating character, Cassidy, is friends with Jacob, a ghost who saved her life and thus gained access to the world of the living. Viceversa, Cassidy can now go beyond the veil and feels and sees ghosts. She's surprised to meet another "in-betweener" in Edinburgh, and to find out that feeling ghosts and going beyond the veil actually have a purpose. Even more surprising and scary is the discovery of a very powerful ghost who seems to have a dangerous and strong influence on the living. A good first novel in a series, lively narrated.

not bad
ok so it's more of a short story than a book to me..Jacob was a fun and different take on a ghost and the story was light-hearted and an easy read..I did however feel this is more aimed at teenagers and not a 44 year old man..I bought this as I enjoyed vicious!..all in all tho I did enjoy..my only critique on the audio is a moment or two of dodgy Scottish accents!

I Would Read Schwab's Shopping List If I Could
“Every time I get nervous or scared, I remind myself that every good story needs twists and turns. Every heroine needs an adventure.”
I've said this once and I'll say it again: I would read Schwab's shopping list if I had the chance. City of Ghosts was AMAZING, and I highly recommend the audiobook if you get the chance! It's whimsical, it's cute, it's slightly creepy and ahem, it takes place in Edinburgh -- only my favourite place in the entire world.

Spooky fun
Cassidy Blake is best friends with a ghost named Jacob. Ever since Jacob saved Cassidy's life, the two have been mysteriously linked: Jacob can cross through the veil (what separates the ghost and living world) to be by Cassidy's side, while Cassidy can also cross into the spirit world. What's more, their bond means that Jacob can read Cassidy's thoughts.
I enjoyed Jacob and Cassidy's relationship so much. Cassidy is very protective of Jacob and the two are constantly looking out for each other, making this a sweet friendship dynamic. Though, as the story progresses, Cassidy realises that Jacob may be keeping secrets...
Cassidy's parents are a quirky ghost-hunting team, despite not being able to see the ghosts their daughter can. When her parents get an offer to turn their book series into a TV show, they jump at the chance. Cassidy is therefore whisked away to Scotland, Edinburgh, to accompany her parents as they film the most haunted places on offer. Cassidy's parents added a fun element to the story and I also loved the setting of Edinburgh. Since I've been to the haunted places mentioned, I could imagine everything clearly and I was happy that the author had obviously done her research. It was fun seeing how Cassidy - as an American - viewed the city that is close to home for me. (I'm very thankful she eventually enjoyed her British fish and chips... I would not have taken the insult lightly).
The book is filled with great twists and turns, wonderful characters and fittingly spooky settings. The only thing that bothered me was the amount of Harry Potter references. It was strange because they held no relevance and only took me out of the story. I hope the author won't continue this into the second book. But I will definitely be reading on; this was a joy to read.
As for the narration: prepare for bad Scottish and British accents. Despite this, I still greatly enjoyed the audiobook.

Not great
Narrator had the most annoying voice. The story jumped between some interesting writing and then colloquial ramblings full of American pop culture references. totally unrelatable for my Australian kids. Got half way through and could not listen any longer and had to return it to audible.

A short, fun adventure with a great world
This was a short but captivating piece about a girl and her interaction with the other realm. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and found the world and ghost system very intriguing. The first book has sewn the seeds of intrigue for what is sure to be a good little series, and I'm keen to continue the adventure with Cassidy and Jacob.
My only critique was I found the "oh the brits are so different to us Americans" descriptions and interactions a little irritating, and perhaps Cassidy's narrative voice at the beginning a little simplistic, however I do acknowledge that it's a book for younger readers than Schwab's usual audience so I don't hold it against her. Overall, the book has all the elements of being well loved by younger readers, and I wish I'd been able to read it in my early teens.
*Audiobook review*
Good narration, with distinctive voices and a good amount of tonal variety dependent on the events within the book. Not sure if I liked the exaggeration of the parents, but the voices were at least identifiable and easy to differentiate in dialogue-heavy scenes. Overall, an enjoyable listen.

A well told ghost story for all ages!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, the story is well written and easy to fall into. The characters are interesting and the story is binge-worthy. I enjoyed the Harry Potter references and the nod to the historical facts of Scotland. I hope there are a series of these, I highly recommend.

I so dearly wish it was longer
This book transported me to a world so easily I was enraptured by its mystery and action, questions still burning, I hope there are follow up books to this amazing find. Delving deeper into the other side.
