Story
Rafe Varik. The troublemaker. The risk taker. The sexy club owner full of wicked promises. Rafe has devoted his immortal existence to pleasure and causing mischief. The only ones who can depend on him are his brothers. Of course, that’s very much a Varik thing. But when the leader of the Arsenault clan specifically requests Rafe’s help in tracking down a killer, he can’t say no. Sure, Rafe claims he’s doing it for his family. They’ve attracted too many enemies and could use a few allies. That’s not the whole truth, though.

Publisher's Summary
Vampires slaughtered my family. No one believed me until I met some new friends, who promised to help me get justice.
But nothing prepared me for Marcus Varik. Tall, dark, and mind-numbingly sexy. But he’s also shy, protective, and adorably eccentric.
Oh God, I should have never agreed to betray him. Hopefully, it's not too late to fix my mistake before I lose more people I love.
Claiming Marcus is the first book in an MM paranormal romance series that has vampires, betrayal, annoying brothers, music, heartbreak, hope, sexy times, and a raven named Ozzie.

Vampires Win
Going in I wasn't sure of this listen since vampires aren't my usual favorite. However given a chance I figured it was worth a listen. I was immediately drawn into a world where one main character, Ethan had his whole family slaughtered by vampires when he was a kid. He gets a job working for a vampire to help an overly zealous anti vampire group kill vampires for revenge. Marcus is a vampire who opted to be turned over with his brother to take care of his mother who was a mentally ill vampire. This story follows Ethan who falls for Marcus and realizes not all vampires are evil and there are redeeming qualities. He seeks to escape the league, and Marcus who falls for Ethan not knowing his history. There story is a wild story that was masterfully told. It left me no longer a sceptic and needing to hear the brothers stories and find out the rest of this family's journey. I can't wait to listen to the next installment.

Start of an Excellent Vampire Series!
What a masterfully written tale between a survivor of a vampire attack which killed his family and an eldest among 4 brothers who takes his responsibility to protect his family of vampires.
I enjoyed listening to this low angst but such captivating vampire story. I love how Ethan and Marcus came together. The conflicting emotions that had been present in Ethan since the beginning. His heart, even if a bit bruised was still so good and pure. And I adore the brooding Marcus, so responsible, so protective of his family but so dang lonely.
The world building in this series is wonderfully done. There was no rush, it took its time but was still so engaging.
I love the bonds between brothers, how none of them are perfect but their relationship so strong, others are threatened by it.
Kenneth’s narration brought the book to life. Awesome job!

The only word that comes to mind is: perfect!
I love vampire stories, and this book is the perfect start to a family saga that promises to be just amazing!
Marcus is the oldest of the four Varik brothers, turned into vampires almost 200 years ago. Just as he and his human assistant start to fall in love, secrets start to unravel and dangers come at his family from many sides.
I loved the bond between the brothers, and I especially loved the deep bond between Marcus and Ethan.
Kenneth Obi's narration is just perfect, his voice for Marcus is exactly what I envisioned for the strong, brooding elder Varik.
Can't wait for book 2!

weird narration
So, the story seemed fine, the kind of nonsense I like to hear when I'm stressed out. I am curious how they get to the end but I just can't bring myself to listen any longer. The narrator uses this weird high pitched voice for one of the main characters. He sounds like a castrated muppet. I'm not sure why narrators often choose to make one of the characters in m/m books sound like a teenage girl - the whole point of being gay is that there are two men. This is just such an egregious example I couldn't grit my teeth through it.
I'd read the rest of the book on a tablet or something but the author does the thing where they only reference the race of the one black person. Everyone else has a hair color, or a profession or a height. So distracting and annoying.

It’s a good story
The story is pretty cool. Classic vampire romance
The performance for Ethan and Marcus is so weird. The way the characters are described it’s hard to picture them with these voices. Marcus is described as tall, muscular and with should length black hair and piercing blue eyes. Which sounds like a dream yeah? But then the voice sounds the way I imagine King Kong would if he could speak. Ethan sounds extremely feminine, which is fine but his character doesn’t seem like he would speak that way. Idk it made the whole interactions between the two so hard to picture. You can have a deep voice without sounding like an angry monster. I skipped some parts and found myself happier that it was over

Its about time for a good Vampire story!
If you’ve been looking for a good MM Vampire story, look no more. This is a book one in a series and does have quite a bit of backstory especially at the beginning, plus build-up for the series but it is very well done and keeps you pulled into the story.
I adored Marcus and Ethan. Ethan is a human with spunk and in the beginning, is going for what he thinks is revenge until he meets Marcus and his brothers and realizes they are not the vampires he is looking for but now its too late and he has brought danger to Marcus’ doorstep but can he save him?
I loved this story and it kept me turning the page (well in my case listening. I did it all in one afternoon.) There is lots of action and the romance is a slow burn but so good.
Kenneth Obi gives each character distinguishable voices and each voice tells you of the character's personality. You can hear the soft but determination in Ethan. The strength and protectiveness in Marcus and the cackle in the evil vampire lady is amazing. His narration keeps you absorbed in the story and you forget all about the boring tasks you are doing.

Falling in love with your vampire boss!
Ethan is after revenge - vampires killed his entire family. He gets a job with Marcus, one of the Varik vampires, so he can get info on the family but doesn’t count on falling for him. I didn’t mind this, Ethan was a substantial character and the political manoeuvrings of the vampire hierarchy were interesting. I found Marcus a little bit of a caricature, I wanted to know more of his thoughts, and it’s possibly why the relationship felt a little instalove-ish - I would have liked the relationship to have been a bit more hard won. The final action scenes seem to resolve suddenly, I expected them to be more substantial. I’ll read more of this series because I’m keen to see how the politics plays out. 🎧 Kenneth Obi provided a solid narration.

A vampire story
I love vampire stories and Claiming Marcus didn't disappoint. Marcus and his three brothers are forming the Varik family with their maker Aiden who cares for them as a father. They are all very protective of each other and try to keep away from other vampires in their struggle for power. Ethans family has been killed by vampires and he is the only survivor from their apartment floor and he still remembers the voices of the killers. When Marcus offers Ethan a temporarily job to help him move house he gladly accepts if only to find the killers of his family. But what he finds is a close family to which he is drawn to. Soon Marcus and Ethan can't keep their hands of each other and that is when the problems start. Someone is after Marcus and his family and Ethan needs to protect them. But he is only human and his joyful nature is not enough to keep everyone and himself safe. Kenneth Obi does an excellent job narrating this story. It comes alive with his different voices. A recommender. I can't wait for the stories of the other three brothers.

Really enjoyed listening to this audiobook, different from the usual JD books, but actually very good.
Storyline, characters are just as great as the Ward Security series.
Looking forward to hearing Saving Rafe next 😊

Jocelynn Drake and Kenneth Obi - the perfect duo
I loved this book! My heart ached for Ethan, who lost his family to a horrific vampire attack, and I empathized with his desire to seek revenge. I both hated and sympathized with Marcus's mother. I loved Marcus and his brothers and how protective of their mother they were, how they were protective of humans, and how they embraced Ethan and made him a part of their family. And dare I say that I absolutely adored Rafe.
Jocelynn Drake's writing is superb. She weaves a beautiful story of love, loss, pain, and acceptance. She drew me into the story from the very first page.
Kenneth Obi's narration was perfect. His voice brought the characters to life for me. I could actually picture the characters and their scenes in my mind, which increased my enjoyment of the story.
Anxiously awaiting Rafe's book.

I LOVE KENNETH!
The story is always full stars, because if I wouldn't like the story as ebook, I wouldn't listen to the audiobook. I can't listen to an audiobook without knowing the book, that's not possible for me, maybe because I'm not a native English speaker.
The performance from the narrator is also very important for me. I can't listen to a lot, because my English as a non-native-speaker isn't so perfect to follow a whole story over hours, when the narrator speaks too fast or too sloppy. Normally I have to SEE the person, who is talking to me in English. Kenneth Obi is one of the top 5 narrators (so far) for me, I can listen without break and have no problems to follow. I'm just not yet finish with the book, but I listen enough to give a review. But as usual, Kenneth did a great job!
PLEASE READ MY RATING SYSTEM!!!
To my ratings:
5* - very very good
it's like an A+
4* - very good and will be often re-listening
it's like an A
3* - it's more then a one-time-listening.
it's like a B

great series starter
you ever read a book, enjoy the hell out of it, but know the next ones going to be better, and maybe the one after that ever more so? that's what this was like. A lot of it has to do with Marcus not being the most interesting brother, he's the glue that keeps them together, in line, and that's fine, the romance between Marcus and Eric was wonderfully beautiful and yet I want more. I want the other brothers.
the story had me hook from the moment I started it, and i came out wanting more. the world building up enough to know what's happening, which was a pretty simplistic with a politics that just wants to become more involved and complex though I'm not sure that's the direction we'll be going in. but who knows, one for sure I'm going to find out.
the audio was done nicely, there was only one moment where a characters voice changed when he got more air time (i guess) and one part where the tone changed greatly but overall i was able to sink into the story without a problem.
