Decades ago in the small town of Fogg Lake, The Incident occurred: an explosion in the cave system that released unknown gases. The residents slept for two days. Now the eerie effects are showing up in Fogg Lake descendants.

Story
Five-year-old Sloane McBride couldn’t sleep that night. Her parents were arguing again, their harsh words heating the cool autumn air. Then there was that other sound - the ominous thump before all went quiet. In the morning, her mother was gone. The official story was that she left. Her loving, devoted mother! That hadn’t sat any better at the time than it did when Sloane moved out at 18, anxious to leave her Texas hometown in search of anywhere else. But not even a fresh start working as a model in New York could keep the nightmares at bay. Or her fears that her father is deadly.

Publisher's Summary
Welcome to Burning Cove, California, where 1930s Hollywood glamour conceals a ruthless killer...
Vivian Brazier never thought life as an art photographer would include nightly wake-up calls to snap photos of grisly crime scenes or headshots for aspiring male actors. Although she is set on a career of transforming photography into a new art form, she knows her current work is what’s paying the bills.
After shooting crime scene photos of a famous actress, the latest victim of the murderer the press has dubbed the “Dagger Killer,” Vivian notices eerie similarities to the crime scenes of previous victims - details that only another photographer would have noticed - details that put Vivian at the top of the killer’s target list.
Nick Sundridge has always been able to “see” things that others don’t, coping with disturbing dreams and visions. His talent, or as he puts it - his curse - along with his dark past makes him a recluse, but a brilliant investigator. As the only one with the ability to help, Nick is sent to protect Vivian. Together, they discover the Dagger Killer has ties to the glitz and glamour of Hollywood royalty and high society. It is a cutthroat world of allure and deception that Vivian and Nick must traverse - all in order to uncover the killer who will stop at nothing to add them to their gallery of murders.

Wish I hadn’t
As soon as the narrator started to speak, I wish I had not used an audible credit on this book. I am an Amanda Quick fan, and I enjoy this newest series and have read them all. I wish I had read this one too instead of listening to it. The narrator wasn’t exactly monotone, but in my opinion lacked the inflection and nuances required for a mystery/romance. There was no chemistry between the H/h. It wasn’t the story, it was the speaker. Almost all the male characters sounded like robots, especially the hero. I don’t necessarily like when women or men narrators try to sound like the opposite sex because it can be distracting to the story. However, without some change in tone or accent or something, it’s hard to follow. Even when the book says “she whispered” or “he said softly”, there was NO change to the narrators speech patterns, tone, or volume. Anger and rage was not apparent when it should be. Love sounded more like mild interest. If you like Amanda Quick, DO NOT listen to this book! Read it instead and select something else to listen to. I only gave the performance 2 stars because it wasn’t completely dead like some I have listened to. But it was close.

Good story, little slow at times. My biggest issue was the narrator. She had no inflection in her voice.... I had to back up and re-listen to parts of the book because I couldn't tell which character was "talking".

Great Potential....
Yes I am a fan of Jayne Krantz and Amanda Quick-just for the record.
The book imitated a period Hollywood movie just a little too well in some ways, and was way off the Hollywood mark in others.
Too many potential areas for fleshing out the story were replaced with long magical dialogues to fill in when it came to the murder mystery angle.
So many dropped small plotlines.
Old friends deserved more of an appearance.
Gunshot wounds healed instantly after a doctor visit?
A perhaps magical dog suddenly loses his whole place in the story after a substantial opening act?
The burned cottage and loss of nearly ALL of Vivians belongings were never grieved?
We got much better physical descriptions of minor characters than the main ones, and most actually seemed more real.
What was this Men series all about and how and why did Vivian envision it?
I pretty much missed whatever passed for the love scene-and whatever passion or tenderness existed between Vivian and Nick.
So this was where it fell off of the Hollywood movie formula.
I knew what the main characters thought many times, but I never could actually visualize them or how they felt in an emotional sense. I couldn’t quite connect with them.
A 10 hour audiobook poorly and ruthlessly edited down?
Some scenes written by the author and others by someone else?
Because there were excellent scenes interspersed with very flat scenes. Excellent dialogue interspersed with almost dialogue parody.
An elaborate murder plot line
An artists journey
Old friends from previous books
A period piece
A romance
A paranormal element
I just feel as if for once she not only overemphasized the wrong elements but could still not do justice to any due to the length of the book- and so it ended up uneven, unanswered, and unsatisfying.
Her talent has never been in question.
She gets 3 stars because she is an excellent and experienced author who could have and should have been able to make this story a real delight.
The narrator was excellent at snappy dialogue and voices and characters- she was excellent at anger and outrage and madness. The dialogue in the gallery near the end a notable exception- perhaps just an off day.
What she did not excel at was the so called tender emotion. She pretty much stuck with the light romantic thing straight through and I am sure this was partially why I could never actually connect with that romance. I never felt any of their passion or tenderness etc. In an old Hollywood movie I may have heard the banter but seen the chemistry, I might have heard the nonchalance but seen the facial expression or been affected just
By the body language or a smile. It needed to have been conveyed- although romantically she had little to work with I admit.
Overall she was good enough that when she fell off a little I noticed it instantly. So she gets 4 stars.
First book review I have ever taken the time to write and I have read across many genres voraciously since childhood. This must say something...
I think it says I believe both author and narrator are capable of so much more, and worth the time I have taken to offer my thoughts.

I have read every one of AQ’s books, I am a super-fan, but if I had to rate all of her books - this one would have been on the bottom. Something was missing. Romance not romantic, and sex not sensual. May have been the performance. It might have been better if I had read instead of listening.

So entertaining
I have listened to every book in this delightful series and have enjoyed all of them. The time period is a bit unusual, 1930's, and that makes these even more fun. The characters are interesting as are the mysteries and so is the bit of romance in each. Each nook can stand alone but I recommend listening in order. Morgan Hallett is the perfect reader for these.

Entertaining
I enjoyed this book. the heroine did not have any " to stupid to live" moments. I enjoyed the romance. I could have done without the sex scenes. I particularly dont like to listen to them read to me so I skipped that part. the mystery was decent with a few twist. I like how the authors delt with some of the social issues of that era. narration good. overall a nice way to spend a few hours.

Photography: art vs life
It is true that photographers and other artists see things differently. That is true for Vivian. It would be lovely to just do art, but most of us know that doesn't pay the bills. This is true for Vivian and gets her in trouble. This story had many twists I didn't see coming and a wide cast of characters.
The narrator was great though most of the book, but read the exciting part, whether sex or violence, in the same smooth tone she read the commentary. I can't think anyone was that calm in those situations. Not even Vivian.

A cracking good read, with murder and mayhem
This is a story full of action and follows on from the previous book in the series in that the coded anthology of poetry that Luther Pell acquired at the end of the previous book starts to get decoded and throws up the name of the latest commission by a murderer for hire- Vivian Brazier. Nick is an investigator with a slightly secretive past, and an inherited ability that is both gift and curse. He becomes Vivian's bodyguard.
Meanwhile the dagger murderer, is at large, and Vivian has been at the crime scenes in her role as freelance news photographer, which she does to pay the bills whilst trying to get her artistic photography accepted by the local art establishment. As the story develops, so do a number of twists and turns, a house fire, a trip to Burning Cove, more deaths, challenges and adventures.
We meet again some of the characters from the previous books and in my opinion it is best read these in series order.
The narrator did a reasonable job but isn't great at accents. It is however easy to distinguish most characters.
A solid 4 star read overall.
