Publisher's Summary

Revised and Updated, with a New Chapter on Trauma and Anxiety, a List of Resources, and More

Over 7 Million Copies Sold

A cultural phenomenon that has helped heal millions of readers, this modern classic holds the key to understanding codependency and unlocking its hold on your life.

As heard on Glennon Doyle’s We Can Do Hard Things podcast.

Melody Beattie’s compassionate and insightful look into codependency—the concept of losing oneself in the name of helping another—has guided millions of readers toward the understanding that they are powerless to change anyone but themselves and that caring for the self is where healing begins.

Is someone else's problem your problem? If, like so many others, you've lost sight of your own life in the drama of tending to a loved one’s self-destructive behavior, you may be codependent––and you may find yourself in this book. With personal reflections, exercises, and instructive stories drawn from Beattie’s own life and the lives of those she’s counseled, Codependent No More helps you break old patterns and maintain healthy boundaries and offers a clear and achievable path to healing, hope, freedom, and happiness.

This revised edition includes an all-new chapter on trauma and anxiety—subjects Beattie has long felt necessary to address within the context of codependency—making it even more relevant today than it was when it first entered the national conversation over 35 years ago.

Editorial Review

Start here to build better boundaries
The 1986 classic Codependent No More by Melody Beattie has a special place in my library. To me, it’s a quintessential well-being title for anyone who struggles with putting themselves first. My first copy was passed down to me nearly half a decade ago by a close friend who raved about how it had helped her establish healthy boundaries with her loved ones—just what I needed at the time. While conversations about the validity of the term "codependent" have emerged since the Reagan administration, I still include myself among the countless readers and listeners who have successfully used Beattie’s techniques for prioritizing self-care to jumpstart healing. I’m most looking forward to a brand new chapter on trauma recovery in this modern recording of a legendary self-help book. — Rachael X.

great book with unbearable reader

This book is really good so far. I bought it on kindle and decided to purchase the audio book also so I could listen while i’m driving. I played it for a long car ride and neither of us could deal with her voice it was so difficult to listen to. I honestly really don’t like when authors narrate, there is a reason people who do this professionally are hired.

amazing book

I have been avoiding reading this book because I knew it would help me in ways I wasn't ready for until now. I finished it in 2 days and had more aha moments than I can name. I will definitely read this again soon.

Good content-

The information was very enlightening.
I would have preferred a different narrator. Having the author read/narrate isn’t always the most engaging, in my opinion.

Re-listened after over 10 years

This book helped me heal after a bad codependent relationship but years later I fell back into the same pattern of codependency, weak boundaries, etc.. I am using the steps in this book to once again rebuild my life and figure out how to take care of myself… hopefully I can keep practicing self care for the rest of my life. I probably will need to read it a few more times since I’m very susceptible to falling back into my same patterns. I truly want to break free of this codependency and will read her other books as well.

Life changing clarity

I recommend this book to anyone who is struggling in any relationship (family or love) or has been out of a romantic relationship for any length of time. This book helped me better understand where many of my “default” behaviors stem from, how those behaviors are not set in stone, why my past choices have not been good for me, and what I can do to break my own destructive cycles. I cannot emphasize enough how much value this book has! Wow.

Poor read, good content

The read is sadly v poor because the content is very important. Some of the challenges of authors who write from personal experience, is that they over estimate the relevance of their own experience when extrapolating for others, and furthermore, have more certainty they they should on the findings which relate to their experience. Once you look beyond that, there is so much good in this book.

so so helpful!

this book helped give me the terminology to address a lifelong issue with deeper understanding and an ability to recognize myself in ways that I could not have otherwise. I hope that all people read this book. it helps us to put perspective on our needs and how we have relationships with all people in our lives.

Great affirmations and options

I loved how this can be affirming and help to see new options. The audio version is helpful when you need to hear it someone else’s voice rather than reading it in your own.
