Publisher's Summary

#1 New York Times bestselling thriller writer Kathy Reichs returns with her twenty-first novel of suspense featuring forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan who, after receiving a box containing a human eyeball, uncovers a series of gruesome killings eerily reenacting the most shocking of her prior cases.

Winter has come to North Carolina and, with it, a drop in crime. Freed from a heavy work schedule, Tempe Brennan is content to dote on her daughter Katy, finally returned to civilian life from the army. But when mother and daughter meet at Tempe’s place one night, they find a box on the back porch. Inside: a very fresh human eyeball.

GPS coordinates etched into the eyeball lead to a Benedictine monastery where an equally macabre discovery awaits. Soon after, Tempe examines a mummified corpse in a state park, and her anxiety deepens.

There seems to be no pattern to the subsequent killings uncovered, except that each mimics in some way a homicide that a younger Tempe had been called in to analyze. Who or what is targeting her, and why?

Helping Tempe search for answers is detective Erskine “Skinny” Slidell, retired but still volunteering with the CMPD cold case unit—and still displaying his gallows humor. Also pulled into the mystery: Andrew Ryan, Tempe’s Montreal-based beau, now working as a private detective.

Could this elaborately staged skein of mayhem be the prelude to a twist that is even more shocking? Tempe is at a loss to establish the motive for what is going on…and then her daughter disappears.

At its core, Cold, Cold Bones is a novel of revenge—one in which revisiting the past may prove the only way to unravel the present.

Not Her Best

Although I’m generally a fan of Tempe Brennan and jump at the chance to get a new book this one was a bit of a let down. The murders were an interesting puzzle but the motive was ultimately a big let down because it seemed too contrived. Ryan was mostly absent and daughter Katie was dragged into the story in a way that also seemed contrived just for maximizing the shock value at the end. Just ok - not great.

disappointing

was really looking forward to this book, but it left me disappointed.
it seemed like more of an outline of a novel, not an actual complete story. the way skinny was written was offensive, ryan was completely unnecessary, brought nothing to the story at all. katie was an after thought, not sure what her presence was meant to add.
and tempe was pissy and annoying. didn’t find any of them engaging, likable or interesting.
and the premise of the story was so outrageous… just a huge let down.

Narrator was different and not as good.

The previous narrator did a much better job. She was simply too flat in many situations, but what really annoyed me was the mispronunciation of “garrote.” I questioned whether I was wrong and checked YouTube as well as MW, and Cambridge dictionaries. I checked for the British and even French pronunciations. This lady was wrong and it drove me crazy.

Kathy Reichs - Another winner

Kathy Reichs continues to intrigue her readers with another Tempe Brennan adventure. Tempe’s job as a forensic anthropologist leads her into complex and challenging cases. She manages to become over involved in her cases and that gets her into trouble.
I wish Ryan had a more prominent presence in this book. I LOVE the playfulness and banter between Tempe and Ryan. I also like the fact that despite all she has accomplished professionally, Tempe still displays insecurities and is vulnerable in her personal life.
Another winner by Kathy Reichs!
